More than Memory

Why Reading Matters

In Australia there are 245,000 people with dementia. By 2030 that number will double. It's a major health issue for our society, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood conditions, especially by young people. In this program we follow eight curious teenagers as they meet elders with dementia, and then create video projects that explore life and memory during old age, the realities of dementia and the way young people can engage better with older people. This is an innovative examination of health, ageing and the power of the media process to explore an issue. The DVD also includes the finished student films.

Science writer Rita Carter tells the story of how modern neuroscience has revealed that reading, something most of us take for granted, unlocks remarkable powers. Carter explains how the classic novel 'Wuthering Heights' allows us to step inside other minds and understand the world from different points of view, and she wonders whether the new digital revolution could threaten the values of classic reading. This program is a wonderful combination of scientific clout and creative, imaginative wonder to inspire the reader in all of us and have a better understanding of the importance of reading for brain stimulation and development.

In this program, we discuss what wikis and blogs are and the differences between them. Students and teachers alike will see how these tools can be used in education, through various examples of use in the classroom. Viewers also meet the CEO and founder of edublogs.com, John Farmer, who demonstrates how easy it is to create your very own wikis and blogs. This is a fascinating look at how incorporating these online teaching and learning tools can enhance and encourage participation in any classroom.

Hot Tips for Classroom Management One of the biggest challenges facing teachers today is classroom management and dealing with difficult students. This program provides practical help, offering some effective preventative strategies, as well as ways to deal with difficult behaviour when it occurs. Covering: pre-planning, establishing the rules and other strategies, routine, seven steps of behaviour management, the behaviour interventions pyramid, depersonalising behaviour sanctions and reflection, and written by teachers in the know, this is a great professional development tool for any new teacher, or any teacher wanting to brush up on essential classroom skills. Managing Challenging Behaviour

In this program we present further strategies to help teachers, parents and students in all schools combat bullying. This program explains what bullying is, who the bullies are, what causes some students to become bullies and what can be done about the situation. Most importantly, it takes us to a school that has developed its own innovative response to bullying that involves staff, parents and students monitoring and responding to bullying through strategies such as continuous 'bullying surveys', a comprehensive code of conduct, an incident register, increased staff supervision of school 'hot spots' and a 'peer support' program.

'Managing Challenging Behaviour' helps identify and understand teachers’ management style and explore the strengths and weaknesses of the styles of classroom management. It examines the causes of challenging behaviour in a wide variety of schools with an emphasis on those you can influence directly. This program gives an understanding of coping techniques and support options to help deal with situations and challenging behaviour. ‘Trigger’ scenarios encourage discussion, debate and sharing of examples from own experiences. It helps recognise the need for intervention and the development of an effective whole school intervention policy.

Easy Ways to Use E-Learning

Teaching ESL Students in the Mainstream Classroom

Students of today are more technologically advanced than ever before. They live their lives with technology at their fingertips. In this program we discuss how education systems are undergoing a transformation, and how e-learning is becoming further integrated into the classroom. We look at the benefits of e-learning, and how by engaging students on a level and with material to which they will respond can make a teacher's job easier. Introducing e-learning methods and strategies, we also investigate the benefits of Learning Management Systems and how these changes in teaching methods are benefiting both teachers and students.

It is vital for teachers to consider the language used in their subject area from an ESL learner's point of view. This informative program helps teachers accommodate ESL learners with real-life classroom examples and practical strategies. We explore how teachers can consider the language demands of their lessons and use non-verbal cues to enhance language comprehension. We then explain how language modelling builds learner confidence and how to differentiate between language and content when correcting. Finally we demonstrate the ‘Think- Pair-Share’ strategy for concept checking and discuss the importance of integrating cognitive taxonomies and learning styles to build thinking skills.

E-Learning in Education In the past 20 years there has been a massive revolution in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Not only do today’s young people own multiple ICTs, they use them constantly in their day-to-day life. It’s easy to regard the shift in use of technology as being something fundamentally new, but it’s not. This program opens up a discussion about e-learning: what it’s good for, why we need it, and how we can encourage it in our schools. It looks at the revolution in youth communications, the implications of this on education, the meaning of multiliteracy and recent developments in e-learning from industry leaders. Integrating ICT in the Curriculum The task of successfully integrating ICT into the curriculum raises a number of questions. What is the role of this new tool? Does it actually enhance the educational process? How can ICT be successfully integrated into what schools are currently doing? Is ICT the change-agent that will take schools into a whole new way of learning? How do students feel about ICT? Is it just a gimmick? Does it actually engage all students, or does it turn some of them off? Through interviews and case studies, this program will assist teachers in coming to some conclusions about the use of ICT and other issues arising from this major change in the way that learning is supported in the modern classroom. TEACHING AND LEARNING THEORIES

The Empty Desk

Identifying and Assisting At-risk Students For many young people, the school environment is a place of learning, creating friendships, forging an identity and searching for a direction in life. However, there are some students who have difficulty in actively engaging in the learning process and therefore run the risk of not completing their school education. 'The Empty Desk' is a practical and informative program that focuses on how educators can identify and assist students at risk. It introduces what 'student at risk' is, examines the causes of disengagement and provides strategies that educators can use in the classroom to build a strong teacher student relationship. Adult Learning 1: Principles Learning is a lifelong activity. Without realising it, adults continually learn throughout their lives in an informal way. However as the population ages, and the nature of jobs and work change, we need to address the perceived barriers faced by many adult learners in more formal situations. In this program we introduce the key principles of adult learning, including learning styles and some specific difficulties faced by older individuals. By understanding the barriers adult learners face, facilitators can help unlock potential advantages, decrease barriers to adult learning, and take advantage of the methods available to best engage and support adults in their on-going education.

Accommodating Different Learning Styles

Learning is a part of life. We learn many different things in a variety of ways. For educators, it's all about finding the most effective learning styles for each individual to achieve success in the teaching environment. This program describes three main learning styles – visual, auditory and kinaesthetic – and the four personality types that all individuals display. It provides concrete examples of the main styles and encourages all educators to learn more about the composition of their classes. By making the effort to cater for different styles of individual adult learners and varying teaching techniques, teachers and students can experience successful learning outcomes.

Adult Learning 3: Inclusive Practices

It's easy for a teacher to assume that all his or her students learn in the same way but the truth is that there is a multitude of different learning styles, characterised by three main types: auditory, visual and kinaesthetic. In this program we explore these different styles; observe students and teachers in action; learn how to employ techniques and strategies that cater for the variety of learning styles; and see and hear about current best practice. STUDENT HEALTH ISSUES

Teen Depression

I'm Sorted

Signs, Symptoms and Getting Help

Teachers are the unsung heroes of our community. Selfless, committed to helping and changing people's lives, many people can remember at least one teacher who inspired them during their formative years – someone who encouraged them to be their best or motivated them to want to learn more. This heartwarming and uplifting series celebrates the people who change lives – teachers. This series embraces the power of knowledge and the impact teachers can have not only in the classroom but also the lives of the students they teach and the wider community.

Susan

In this episode we meet Susan Reppion-Brooke, a Music teacher at Dulwich Hill High School of Visual Arts and Design. An ex-opera singer, she is a driving force within the school and also the musical soul of the wider community.

Depression is treatable and should not be suffered in silence. This program, targeted at teenage viewers, emphasises the message that depression is a medical illness, not a sign of weakness or a flaw in character. Students learn the warning signs of depression, that resorting to alcohol and drugs only makes depression worse and that seeking help is an act of strength, not weakness. Drugs are often part of teenage life. Just hoping that most children will come through unscathed is not an effective strategy. What kids need are strong tools to be able to make safe, healthy and responsible decisions about legal and illegal drugs. Schools play a central role in helping them make such decisions by providing education about the risk and effects of drugs, developing their confidence and skills and by creating a safe and supportive learning environment. In this excellent program we see exactly how these aims can be achieved to make your school a place where children can grow up to face life's challenges drug free.

Asperger's Syndrome is a poorly understood condition, especially in a school setting. In 2007 however the Sutherland Shire Council introduced an Access Arts program called Courage is a Telescope. The program explores the unique qualities of Asperger's syndrome, facilitates social interaction through special interests, expresses sensory overload and communicates thinking processes through mask work. An enlightening and empowering look at this challenging condition, and the inspiring teaching work that is achieving positive results.

Asperger’s Syndrome is a confusing condition. This is understandable, given that some of the world’s great achievers are 'Aspies', but so too are some of our most withdrawn individuals. This program is a revealing profile of Mark Moerebach. Mark can name the top ten singles in the Australian charts from any month in the 1980s, yet finds it confronting to step into a pub. So what happens when he is drawn onto TV’s Rockwiz? This is an informative and inspiring look at a unique individual and an extraordinary health condition.
