O

ne of the things Dillard-Jones Builders proves with its 2010 Southern Living Showcase Home is that “green” can be gorgeous. A custom floor plan by Johnston Design Group, this year’s Showcase Home is a LEED (Leadership in Energy Efficient Design) for Homes project — designed and built for ‘green’ certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. It also will be incorporated into the Southern Living collection of national house plans as the Custom Builder Program’s first collaborative design/build project. 2 | 2010 Southern Living Showcase Home

The 4,000-square-foot home in Claremont is an open floor plan with five bedrooms and four bathrooms. Special features include a chef’s kitchen, media room, study, laundry room with hobby space, and outdoor living space that includes a screened porch, outdoor fireplace and outdoor cooking area. The connection between the home’s indoor and outdoor spaces, along with the intent to bring the outdoors inside, plays an important role in creating a home that promotes a healthy living environment. Old World influences and high craftsmanship come together in the 2010 Southern Living Showcase Home to create a sense of timeless quality, stability, and tranquility. Behind the scenes, energy and water efficient technologies combine with low maintenance materials to create a home that is economical to maintain for years to come. All of these elements work together to qualify for LEED for Homes certification, a third-party verification based on gaining points for everything from site preparation to the use of low emissions flooring and paint. Dodd Wood of Anderson, SCbased Wood Insulating served as the LEED for Homes verifier for the 2010 Southern Living Showcase Home.

guest parking and serves as a threshold to the home’s more private spaces. Permeable pavers are used in parking areas to filter contaminants and reduce run-off.

45 A stepping stone path leads the pedestrian 46 from the private parking court, between the

primary residence and carriage house and into the rear garden spaces where it provides an irregular edge between drought tolerant lawn areas and native groundcover beds. 47 A potted herb garden in gravel paving takes advantage of the minimal sunlight that the rear yard receives.

• •

48 A rain barrel captures rainwater from the

carriage house to supply water to a potting area under the carriage house’s rear arbor. A compost area further supports the home’s kitchen garden.

home’s rain garden where runoff from the rear yard’s limited lawn areas can be filtered. The rain garden is home to Virginia Sweetspire, Iris and other native plants that provide seasonal interest while tolerating saturated soils.

50 The stepping stone path meanders around the 51 site’s preserved signature oak tree to provide

access to the lawn and master bedroom before terminating at a spacious outdoor room.

52 The paver patio provides seating around a large

outdoor fireplace.

53 A circular turfgrass area surrounded by a

low hedge provides a visual terminus from the stepping stone path and serves as an overflow area for larger events.

54 A water feature generates soft noise to

complete this outdoor experience. The fireplace and outdoor patio placement serves to provide a strong visual and physical connection between the home’s interior and exterior spaces.

kitchen adjacent to the screened porch is an extension of the home’s interior living space and is programmed for additional outdoor seating and dining.
