Season Preview With the loss of three starters, including CIS all-Canadian and OUA East player of the year Alaine Hutton, the University of Toronto women’s basketball team will rely on the solid play of impact player Nicki Shutz and guard Erin McNeely to lead the Blues to another successful season in 2008-09 and back to the OUA final. Schutz, a 2008-09 OUA first team all-star, will be called upon to continue to score and be dominant under the boards this season. Schutz was fourth in the OUA and eighth in the CIS, averaging 16.5 points per game and was ranked second in the OUA and CIS with 11.7 boards per game last season. McNeely, along with Joanna Medri and Emily Larson, will be relied upon to create a strong perimeter on offence as well as maintain a solid defensive presence. Emma Currie will also be needed to distribute the ball at the guard position. Third-year forward Megan Stoncius brings aggressive play at both ends of the court, while second-year players Tania Meunier and Robyn Fashler will be called upon to produce quality minutes in the paint. Robyn Fashler, a second-year transfer student from UBC, is extremely athletic and will enhance the Blues running game. Coach Bélanger welcomes five fresh new high school faces: Amanda Lum is a guard from Markham, Ont. with superb ball handling skills and defensive awareness. Ottawa native Hayley Max-Lino loves the running game and has a nose for the hoop, while Alicia Van Kampen of Orangeville, Ont. is extremely athletic and long. Katelyn McConnell (Whitby, Ont.) is a first-year guard with great quickness and a scoring touch and Grace Mahary is a power forward from Edmonton, Alta. “We believe this team is an outstanding collection of athleticism, determination, hard work, enthusiasm and heart,” said head coach Michèle Bélanger. “They are fully committed to the program and to winning. As coaches, we are excited about the season and we look forward to witnessing great successes on the court.” The Blues head into the 2009-10 season with great expectations. With a mature and experienced core group of players and a crop of enthusiastic new recruits, they are ready to challenge the province’s best for another OUA titles and a berth in the CIS championship tournament in March.

Record Manual VARSITY BLUES HISTORY As part of the Varsity Blues family, women’s basketball is one of 44 men’s and women’s teams in 26 sports offered by U of T. The breadths of the Varsity Blues experience and legacy are unmatched at a Canadian university. The University of Toronto Varsity Blues basketball team has made 15 trips to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) Championship, including a berth in the 2002 National tournament. With one national title, two silver medals and two bronze medals to show for their efforts, the Varsity Blues are gunning for a trip back to the CIS Championship in 2008-09. U of T has collected the conference crown nine times, the second best in the OUA. The team has brought home the OUA title four times in the past 15 seasons. In 2008-09, the Varsity Blues will look to build on their 18-4 regular season record a year ago and make a run at a 10th OUA championship banner. Along with team accolades, Varsity Blues basketball also regularly attracts some of the top high school studentathletes both here in Ontario and across the country. Since 1985, 52 Varsity Blues have been named OUA allstars and 15 have been named CIS all-Canadians. A number of Blues players have spent time with the Canadian national team and Justine Ellison earned CIS Athlete of the Year honours in 1996. On the sidelines, head coach Michèle Bélanger returns for her 30th season behind the Varsity Blues bench. Her record speaks for itself - nine OUA championships, 15 CIS Championship appearances and five CIS top three finishes, including a national championship crown in 1986. Varsity Blues Women’s basketball is all about excellence on the court, in the classroom and in the community.
