President C a l v i n A. V a n d e r Werf, in l a u d i n g the a c c o m p l i s h m e n t , said t h a t this a w a r d d o u b l e d the s u m total of all non-science g r a n t s ever received b y the College. "THE STRONG LIBERAL arts college can m a k e a unique c o n t r i b u t i o n to the d e v e l o p m e n t of h u m a n i s t s , literate scientists a n d t e a c h e r s of E n g l i s h , " said President V a n d e r W e r f . " T h e English d e p a r t m e n t at H o p e is committed to the p r e m i s e that e a r l y i n v o l v e m e n t of the u n d e r g r a d u ate in w h a t literate p e o p l e d o is the k e y s t o n e of a liberal e d u c a tion." A l t h o u g h the g r e a t e s t p r o p o r tion of the g r a n t is d e s i g n a t e d for English department prog r a m s , Dr. V a n d e r W e r f indicated t h a t the N a t i o n a l F o u n d a t i o n intended for s o m e of the f u n d s to be s h a r e d b y the h i s t o r y , s o c i o l o g y , p s y c h o l o g y , p h i l o s o p h y , art, rel i g i o n , speech, t h e a t e r , m u s i c a n d economics departments. Construction of SCSC Begins With Snow Job President C a l v i n A. " T h r o u g h a c o n c e r t e d effort b y H o p e s maintenance department a n d the H o l l a n d City S n o w Rem o v a l S q u a d t h e r e h a s been n e a r l y e n o u g h s n o w piled in Kollen Field f o r a f i r m f o u n d a t i o n f o r a future SCSC building. "THE WAY T H I N G S s i a n d n o w , " rattled Dr. V a n d e r W e r f , " the s n o w is piled o u t there deeper than it's piled in m y office, a n d t h a t ' s n o bull. T h e s n o w will m a k e a f i r m e r f o u n d a t i o n , a n d it h a s a lot m o r e to it." Tom Renegade, Director of Propaganda and Misinformation, m u m b l e d t h a t "it m a y be o n l y a m a t t e r of y e a r s b e f o r e we a c c u m u l a t e e n o u g h s n o w to b u i l d a truly model SCSC building." Tyler, II, will be " t o get s t u d e n t s to e x p l o r e a n u m b e r of b a s i c h u m a n q u e s t i o n s t h r o u g h reading, discussion a n d writing. E m p h a s i s is placed on d e v e l o p ment of w r i t i n g a b i l i t i e s . "

"THE MORE conventional c o u r s e s h a v e b e e n t r y i n g to p r o mote responding a n d eliminate individual communication hangu p s , " Dr. Miller s a i d . " T h e two i n s t r u c t o r s n o t e d a few problems of the traditional c o u r s e s . P r o b a b l y the biggest, they s a i d , w a s with the A d m i n i s tration. These courses, founded on the p r i n c i p l e t h a t a s t u d e n t c o u l d write well o n l y if he w a s interested in the s u b j e c t , r e q u i r e d t h a t each s t u d e n t write o n s o m e t h i n g vital to h i m , a n d h a v e the p a p e r m i m e o g r a p h e d a n d presented to the c l a s s . T h e p r o b l e m c a m e when t h e m i m e o g r a p h office r e f u s e d to p r i n t the p a p e r s . R e a c t i o n to the c o u r s e in the E n g l i s h d e p a r t m e n t is difficult to a s c e r t a i n - at this e a r l y d a t e . One p r o f e s s o r r e f u s e d to v e n t u r e a n o p i n i o n b e c a u s e " h e h a d not wrestled with the q u e s t i o n or t h o u g h t it t h r o u g h . " A N O T H E R P R O F E S S O R was even m o r e hesitant. " Y o u want me to c o m m e n t o n the new c o u r s e ? " he s a i d a s he u n w o u n d his legs. " Heini B o o r s m a , c h a i r m a n of the g r o u n d s k e e p i n g a n d m a i n t e n a n c e c o m m i t t e e , a n d not to be c o n f u s e d with the Heine of Holl a n d ' s fine local e s t a b l i s h m e n t a n d g r a n d m o t h e r f i g u r e of r e n o w n to H o p e s t u d e n t s , e x p l a i n e d the economic reasons involved heating Dimlit C h a p e l . The trustees, faculty and administ r a t i o n m a n a g e d to p r e s e r v e the H o n e t r a d i t i o n s w i t h o u t a s i n g l e c h a n g e lor 9 5 y e a r s ; t h e y d e s e r v e t h e c h a n c e to c o n t i n u e . The Cultural Affairs Committee must be i m m e d i a t e l y d i s b a n d e d a n d r e p l a c e d b y a n ad hoc c o m m i t t e e oi C o o p e r s v i l l e c h u r c h w o m e n .
