In the a r e a of the College's social system we find that liberalization of College r e g u l a t i o n s continues to be the trend at H o p e , a n d t h a t the l o n g - s t a n d i n g policy oi in loco parentis continues to be revised in the direction of permitting students to regulate their n o n - a c a d e m i c lives. The College continues to m o v e t o w a r d the recognition that the g r a n t i n g ol responsibility breeds m a t u r i t y a n d responsible conduct. T h e key system for senior women will g o into effect next semester, with coeds g r a n t e d the o p p o r t u n i t y to d e m o n s t r a t e their m a t u r i t y in d e t e r m i n i n g w h a t their own individual closing h o u r s s h o u l d be. C a r e f u l o b s e r v a t i o n of the rules s u r r o u n d ing the key system and responsible use of the privilege could possibly result in future extension ol the system to women of other classes. One of these families in H o l l a n d , Michigan b e a r s the n a m e of K l a a s e n . One of the K l a a s e n s was A d r i a n J . K l a a s e n w h o died so unexpectedly last S u n d a y night in his home while visiting with friends. His death w a s s o m e w h a t typical of his life. He m a d e a quiet exit; in lile he h a d m a d e h u n d r e d s of quiet e n t r a n c e s into conferences a n d c l a s s r o o m s , there to m a k e his presence k n o w n t h r o u g n k n o w l e d g e , the persuasiveness of his logic a n d the g r a c i o u s n e s s of his person. T o p r e p a r e a e u l o g y is a difficult a n d t r o u b l e s o m e task. It is difficult because so m a n y of y o u r friends a n d mine h a v e c o m m o n f a i l i n g s a n d c o m m o n virtues. S o m e of u s are h a r d - w o r k i n g , houest, h o n o r a b l e a n d God-fearing. And in the h u m d r u m of life we p a y o u r taxes, s u p p o r t our families a n d the C h u r c h together with other institutions which are m e r i t o r i o u s a n d deserving of assistance.

All this excellent news is extremely welcome; we hope we will h a v e m u c h m o r e ol the s a m e topublish in the future.

There is a s t o r y in a n ancient b o o k , with which none of u s is too f a m i l i a r , telling of the business m a n who after great success decided to retire f r o m his responsibility to society and this he did with tragic results. A d r i a n K l a a s e n , too, w a s a m a n of business whose know-how, astuteness a n d keenness in practical m a t t e r s led him to u n c o m m o n success. H a v i n g achieved this e a r l y in lile, he had the vision a n d a c u m e n to successlully c a r r y on his business a f f a i r s until the end of his d a y s .

N D SO AT A T I M E when most of us would have been content to continue this h a p p y state of a f f a i r s , he de-, cided to c h a n g e the direction of his life. H i s a m b i t i o n w a s to become a teacher, and d r i v e n by it, he a r r a n g e d his business affairs and entered g r a d u a t e school. And he b e c a m e A d r i a n J. K l a a s e n , P h . D . And all of this, at the sacrifice oi a p l e a s a n t existence, a l m o s t g u a r a n t e e d . T h e lonesomeness, discipline and difficulties of res u m i n g f o r m a l s t u d y were all his. T h i s t r e n d m u s t b e r e v e r s e d if we e v e r h o p e to rehabilitate o u r p r i s o n e r s . T h e f i r s t t h i n g t o d o w o u l d b e t o set u p a rec r u i t i n g d r i v e in h i g h s c h o o l s a n d c o l l e g e s ^ t o get a b e t t e r c l a s s of i n m a t e . T h i s w o u l d h a v e to be coupled with h i g h e r p a y for prisoners, so being behind b a r s would become worthwhile. I N T E L L I G E N C E T E S T S h a v e to be set u p a t p r i s o n s t o w e e d o u t t h o s e u n f i t to be imprisoned. Then personal interviews w o u l d be g i v e n to the p r o s p e c t i v e c o n v i c t s t o see if t h e y ' v e g o t w h a t it t a k e s t o b e r e h a b i l i t a t e d . If they c a n ' t cut the m u s t a r d , then the p r i s o n s h o u l d h a v e the right to reject t h e m .

B U T B E Y O N D T H E fact o f t h e e x i s t e n c e of p e o p l e with d i f f e r e n t a s s u m p t i o n s , t h e r e is the q u e s t i o n of h o w we s h a l l r e g a r d t h e m . Of c o u r s e , we all r e m e m b e r quite well the line we w e r e fed b y o u r k i n d e r g a r t e n t e a c h e r s a s to the m e a n i n g a n d s y m b o l i c signific a n c e of t h a t feast. Our m i n d s were but t a b u l a rasae, clean slates, o n t o which filthy p r o p a g a n d a c o u l d t o o e a s i l y be imp r e s s e d . With the light of the s u n c o m e s the w a r m t h to melt a w a y these f a l s e r u m o r s a n d inject w h a t is a s t r u t h . IN SHORT, I h a v e come upon T h e T r u t h , at least a s f a r a s the T h a n k s g i v i n g story, and I am m o r e t h a n willing to s h a r e it with you. Evidently, his g r e a t - g r e a t - g r a n d uncle, on his m o t h e r ' s side, h a d been an h o n o r e d g u e s t at the v e r y first T h a n k s g i v i n g D a y D i n n e r , the v e r y o n e f r o m which we h a v e

T a l k is c h e a p w h e n y o u w a s t e it o n p e o p l e w h o will never understand.
