Most of u s . a t Hope college h a v e not as y e t had t h e chance to do a g r e a t deal f o r our c o u n t r y . But we can t r a i n o u r s e l v e s to be good citizens of o u r c o u n t r y by being good citizens of o u r college. Some s t u d e n t s spend most of t h e i r t i m e complaining. " W h a t a slow place t h i s is'. We c a n ' t even have a good t i m e . " But hbw much good does the complaining do?

T h e r e a r e times when wo m u s t see t h a t we c a n n o t a l w a y s have our own way and t h a t t h e r e is g o v e r n i n g us a f a c u l t y and a board who k n o w s w h a t t h e y a r e doing.

Our "election" is over. We have chosen to come to Hope and we m u s t s t a y h e r e at least f o r the r e m a i n d e r of t h i s school y e a r and probably two o r t h r e e y e a r s a f t e r t h a t . Instead of complaining continually a b o u t conditions we should recognize t h e privileges t h a t we do have and m a k e t h e most of t h e m . Our college can be b r o u g h t to its h i g h e s t level only by the united s u p p o r t of all t h e s t u d e n t s and f h e f a c u l t y . So let's be good citizens — s u p p o r t t h e a d m i n i s t r a t i o n , work f o r b e t t e r conditions, and m a k e o u r college one of t h e best of its kind in t h e land.

A typical Halloween a t m o s p h e r e was created by decorations, g a y costumes and dim lights. P a r t of the evening was devoted to telling those wierd stories t h a t cause y o u t o b e s o r t a 'fraid.

Making out a n o t h e r girl's fort u n e afforded as a n o t h e r jolly and h a p p y pastime. They were very int e r e s t i n g and we a r e sure t h a t some of the prophecies of the f u t u r e will materialize.

Next week we will step on the magic c a r p e t and visit MotherGoose-Land.

Sibylline The Sibylline Society held its regular meeting Nov. 4 at the home of Dorothea Van Saun. A peppy p r o g r a m of variety followed a short business meeting. Several num be r s consisted of trick g a m e s in which each Sib was given a chance to show her intelligence. The Sibs were also given an o p p o r t u n i t y to see a g r e a t s w i m m i n g match and the " g r e a t j u n g l e s of A f r i c a . " L. Rader, N. D e H a a n , E. L e e s t m a , E .

Cosmopolitan The Cosmopolitans o b s e r v e d their f o r t y - t h i r d annual s t a g banquet on the homecoming S a t u r d a y with 42 active m e m b e r s and 30 alumni a t the f r a t e r n i t y house.

T h e dinner followed the f o r m a l initiation of the thirteen new Cosmopolitans.

J i m Moran, president, was toaslm a s t e r . John Henderson g a v e a toast " T o H o p e ; " Henry Kuizenga toasted "To the F r a t e r n i t y ; " Marvin Kruizenga toasted to " T h e A l u m n i , " and Don Koeppe toasted "To the F r e s h m e n . " Music w a s f u r n i s h e d by John Piet, pianist, and Richard Keeler, violinist, aecompanied by William W e l m e r s .

At t h e weekly m e e t i n g held F r i day evening t h e following p r o g r a m was given following a "song service:" J o h n Henderson read some of his original modern poetry, " T h e Real S t u f f . " F r e s h m a n H. V a n d e n B e r g read a paper on " L a n d s c a p e Gard e n i n g . " Dick Keeler, violinist, accompanied by Bill Welmers, played a g r o u p of popular violin tunes.

T h e strenuous events of Homecoming activities whetted the appet i t e s of the Emersonians, so the m e e t i n g F r i d a y night was in the f o r m of a " w i n t e r picnic," in the Masonic Temple. A delicious supper w a s served to the g r o u p of r e g u l a r s , alumni and guests. A f t e r the meal was over, a p r o g r a m was given with President Ensfield presiding. TEAMS A week f r o m S a t u r d a y t h e O r a n g e and Blue eleven will travel to Hillsdale where they will meet the Dales in a game which will decide the M. I. A. A. championship.

Hillsdale has a perfect record t h u s f a r in the conference with t h r e e victories and no d e f e a t s . The O r a n g e and Blue have yet to meet d e f e a t in t h e conference, hut they have heen tied hy hoth Kazoo and Albion.

Hillsdale h a s looked most impressive in all nf their g a m e s this year. Most of their ground gained has been due to r u s h i n g t h r o u g h s t r a i g h t football. T h e y have the heaviest t e a m in the conference, out weighing t h e O r a n g e and Blue eleven on t h e a v e r a g e of t w e n t y five pounds to the man. This is not a novel experience f u r the Hope eleven, for they have heen outweighed in e v e r y g a m e this year.

In their t h r e e conference g a m e s , Hillsdale has scored at least t w e n t y points in each game. They have been scored on only once in t h e conference, Albion scoring a single touchdown in a ."i.'J-ii defeat.

Dunlap, HM»-pound fullback, is one of the o u t s t a n d i n g ball c a r r i e r s in the conference. Pellegrini and Mobily, Dale's halfbacks, will also have to be stopped by the O r a n g e and Blue eleven. Clark is an outs t a n d i n g m a n on the line, w e i g h i n g only a m e r e 22.^ pounds. The O r a n g e and Blue eleven are small, but they a r e full of tight. T h e r e will be eleven fighting Dutchmen that will t a k e the field a g a i n s t Hillsdale a week f r o m S a t u r d a y .

The odds will be heavily a g a i n s t them, but " R e m e m b e r the Homecoming g a m e against Hillsdale last y e a r . " The boys will be (tut fighting hard to bring t h e first M. 1.

The most welcomed alumni, the s t u d e n t s , and all the other spectator;; were thrilled last S a t u r d a y a f t e r n o o n as Hope's eleven marched on to victory over Alma !> to U, in the fifth annual homecoming cele bration at Riverview P a r k .

Hope's victory over Alma i.s three-fold in significance. It was a glorious victory for Coach Bud H i n g a ' s t e a m , it was the first vie tory for Hope in the history "»f com petition over Alma, and it gives Hope a good chance for the M.I.A.A. championship.

Despite the miserable weather, the local team uncorked e v e r y t h i n g they had, especially passes in the first and last q u a r t e r s . Eleven de termined men plunged and passed their way over the ever-important chalk line for a touchdown. J a p i n g a s t a r t e d t h e drive with two long end runs which accounted for 85 yards.

Failing to make any y a r d a g e t h r o u g h line plunges, .1 a p i n g a dropped back and tossed the oval to K o r s t a n j e . This end made a spect a c u l a r catch, falling on his knees, c a t c h i n g the ball, and placed it on the ll-yard line. J a p i n g a picked up two y a r d s t h r o u g h the line and then Bonnett carried the pigskin ovei for the first and only touchdown ol the g a m e .
