A f t e r five r o u n d s of d e b a t i n g , all b u t t w o of the n i n e t e e n t e a m s , r e p r e s e n t i n g colleges and u n i v e r sities f r o m M i c h i g a n t o Maine, were eliminated. Only Kent State U n i v e r s i t y and H o p e College s u r vived to a r g u e out the c h a m p i o n s h i p . T h e d e f e a t e d Ohio u n i v e r s i t y t e a m w a s one of t h e 7 h i g h e s t r a n k i n g duos at t h e n a t i o n a l Pi Kappa Delta convention last year, which m a d e t h e H o p e v i c t o r y even more impressive. A t t h e end of t h e fifth d e b a t e , the K e n t t e a m had t h r e e w i n s , one loss a n d one bye. w h i l e H o p e deb a t e r s h a d t a k e n f o u r and d r o p p e d one. Hope's other team, Marinus Pott and Wilbur Jacobs, ranked above a v e r a g e w i t h t h r e e v i c t o r i e s and t w o d e f e a t s . J a c k D u n n , Michigan S t a t e College H a w i i a n , w h o won t h i s y e a r ' s S t a t e O r a t o r i c a l , was a w a r d e d first place. E i g h t schools w e r e e n t e r e d in the c o n t e s t . A new s y s t e m of proc e d u r e w a s i n i t i a t e d by w h i c h each c o n t e s t a n t s p e a k s t w i c e a m o n g different opponents and different j u d g e s . T h e c u m u l a t i v e r a t i n g s of all t h e j u d g e s a r e a s s e m b l e d to give t h e final decision. Mr. Bont h i u s received t w o first places, t h r e e s e c o n d s , and one t h i r d . A n o t h e r h o n o r w a s a t t a i n e d bv W i l b u r J a c o b s , w h o placed t h i r d in a field of eleven p a r t i c i p a n t s in t h e e x t e m p o r e section of the P r o v ince of t h e L a k e t o u r n e y . TO THESE BE THE GLOR Y T h i s is not j u s t an excuse to take a day f r o m classes. This is a sincere effort on t h e p a r t of the s t u d e n t s to show those s t u d e n t s who have brought honor upon Hope college that we appreciate t h e work which thoy have done. O r a t o r y and debate take time.

When we applaud the w i n n e r s today, we a r e also applauding the coaches, for it is good coaching that makes the w i n s possible. O u r speech d e p a r t m e n t has heaped glory on Hope by b r i n g i n g home three medals f r o m a provincial contest, the highest contest they e n l e r — t h e r e f o r e we h e a p glory on them today.

H o n k i n g De G r a a f to t h e side of t h e road he was duly informed t h a t the girls had led h i m a s t r a y ; and t h e milea g e w a s r e t r a c e d , w i t h a loss of 70 miles a n d 1 a n d o n e - h a l f h o u r s . In t h e d e b a t e s , B o b and Don used this to show t h a t government s p e n d i n g is a h u g e e x p e n d i t u r e a n d t a k e s a lot of t i m e b u t it d o e s n't get the economic auto anyw h e r e . So t h e boys owe t h e i r success to t h e t r i p , a n d i n d i r e c t l y t o t h e g i r l s , a f t e r all.
Virginia Ellison, m e m b e r of the women's debate squad and the women's oratory r e p r e s e n t a t i v e s at the P i - K a p meet is at present confined to her home because of illness. She is suffering f r o m streptococcuc infection. Virginia became ill while on the trip and returned h o m e Saturday. Students wish her a speedy recovery. Robert Bonthius and Donald Van Liere h a v e won f o u r t e e n out of their s i x t e e n intercollegiate debates this past season, thus est a b l i s h i n g one of the o u t s t a n d i n g d e b a t i n g records in Hope history. T h e y will both receive t h e Pi Kappa D e l t a diamond k e y of H i g h e s t Distinction this year.
