De Moor Speaks To Joint "Y" 'S About Growth The first Y meeting of 1939 was a joint meeting on J a n . 3. Dr. Leonard <De Moor was the speaker f o r t h e evening. He chose a s his subject, ' T h e Common Denominator of the Christian Religion." " N a t u r e revels in variety," stated Dr. DeMoor i n his opening remarks. This variety is also desired by God in t h i n g s spiritual. But though our Christian experience may come about in a manner totally different f r o m our neighbor's yet there must be the same essentials in each case: we must realize as the denominator of the Christian religion (1) T h a t the Christian has been laid hold upon by God, (2) T h a t God h a s laid hold upon him t h a t he m i g h t "present his body a living sacrifice wholly acceptable unto God," (3) He must acknowledge t h a t he has failed to become fully "perfect in Christ" and so, (4) He must even strive on to the accomplishment of that goal. • Dr. De Moor urged an individual spiritual checkup in these matters to see just where each person stands a t the beginning of the new year. He stressed the fittingness of striving throughout the year t h a t lies before. In fitting climax A1 Shiphorst, accompanied by Gordon Van Wyke at the piano sang, "Beautiful Garden of Prayer." o

A bitter rivalry in MIAA court play is due to ripen Friday night when Kalamazoo defends its lead in the 1939 race against Hope at Kalamazoo. The game will be the highlight contest of the week as far as this league goes, although two others are to be played Friday night, and three already have been played in circuit competition this week. The Hornets and the Dutch with Olivet lead the league. Kalamazoo has victories over Albion last Friday and Alma Monday. All hats in this department are off to a grand bunch of sports a t Adrian college. . . Hopelessly outclassed by Hope's 10-man juggernaught last Monday, the Bulldogs hung on as their sporting knickname indicates they might. . . Some time, somehow, and between the halves of some basketball game in the league this winter, the name of the winner of the Most Valuable award for MIAA football will be announced. . . Three men, Bob Powers of Hope, Ordell MacElhaney of Albion, and A1 Rizzardi of Hillsdale are tied f o r the honor by a vote of league players. . Other enndidates were Harold Munger of Adrian, Art Morvilius of Olivet, Robert De Vaney of Alma, and Bob Warren of Kalamazoo. . . The final winner will be given a full-size silver football. . . Other candidates, named by members of their own teams, will be awarded gold miniature balls. . . All this is being awarded by an anonymous Battle Creek business man. . . Harold Munger, who was a member of the Adrian cage team, is the only married courtman in the league. . . At least to the knowledge of this department. . . Cornie Pape, Grand Rapids senior, was a boxing champion in high school. . . He won the South high title f o r his weight. . . Two bits of cartilage, which had locked Ed Heneveld's knee following his most recent injury to that member, were removed in an operation ct Kalamazoo two weeks ago. . . Ed was not lonesome in the paper city, however, for a certain graduate Hopeite's classes at Shelby high school did not resume sessions until Jan. 9. Although the schedule was not completed yesterday, the inter-fraternity basketball league is due to s t a r t play tonight. .

Albion was to have played Hillsdale last night. This is the first week of real work in the association, and from now on teams will be busy.
to beat in competition for the rest of the year has been made increasingly clear as Coach Bud Hinga's souad played each game. Against Muskegon, Hope started slowly, but when a 9-7 lead was obtained in the first 10 minutes, the Dutch moved on to an easy victory, Boyink leading the scoring with eight points.

The first group interested in swimming will be taken up to Grand Rapids next week, exact date to be announced on the bulletin boards. The swimmers will be divided into three sections: advanced, intermediate and beginners. Girls participating must have health certificates. The fee will be $1.00 for the entire season and will be paid the first time the girls go up to Grand Rapids. Basketball, under the direction of Mr. Jack Schouten and Thelma Kooiker, began last night. The schedule will be similar to that of last year and will probably be cli•naxed by an All-star game. Plans for a hiking club are being made by Kay Marclay. The group met for an organization meeting last Monday. Thursday evening has been set aside as recreation evening at the gym for the women. The first evening that the gym will be open for this is January 19. Jean Hoekje will be in charge.

Friday night Hope's basketball machine, successful in f o u r of five s t a r t s so f a r this season, throws a barrier in the path of another powerful Michigan Intercollegiate Atheletic association unit at Kalamazoo. The Hingamen, beaten in a playoff for the title at Grand Rapids last year by the Hornets, will challenge Kalamazoo's title defense at the college gym in Kalamazoo a t 8 o'clock P. M. The Barnardmen'j* best victory this year was marked on the record books last Friday when 1937-'38 champions opened their new MIAA season with a victory over Albion, third contender for this season's title, 34-31. Although Hope has played only Adrian in conference play, the Dutch registered impressively in forcing Western State of Kalamazoo into an overtime, and dropping Michigan Normal by a 49-24 score. Friday s battle at Kalamazoo will be close. If conditions are to favor either team, they will favor the Hornets on their own floor. Except for Harrison Jones, M.I. A.A. center who did not return f o r play this year, and Danny Wood, who so f a r has not reported f o r the cage game, the Hornets have the same squad that defeated Hope in last season's playoff. In addition. Coach Barnard is using Bob Warren, MIAA center two years ago, who was ineligible last season. Hope is minus only Don Thomas, by graduation and Ed Heneveld. through injury, from last year's team.
