The Death March Year 3 A new season but the same struggle. Managing bodies and minds through three months of relentless training and matches. Having done it before helps but it never really gets easier. In come the Portland Timbers and the 2018 Champs, Calgary Foothills, for two matches in 36 hours. The ability to manage this is an experience these boys will never forget and will always be able to lean on. Fortunately for our club we now have a few players that have gone through it, understand it and are leading the rest of the group. It is a welcome place for the manager. Knowing the boys won’t be complacent but they are aware of what they are dealing with. A sign of maturity and also a place to direct our very young players when they need a shoulder or someone to ask questions of. The first match of the season was a difficult one from a preparation perspective. With a number of players unavailable due to other commitments a makeshift defensive lineup was put on the field to face Lane United. We weathered a storm for fifteen minutes and then the players that have with us for a few years settled the team down. It was a breath of fresh air and something we have always hoped this type of league and environment could do. Support the players learn how to act, react, and mature. In our first year, and even last season, that would have been a loss. Now, none of us know what will happen as we move forward this season but as coaches and management we will continue to provide the scenarios and situations these players need to keep learning. We want to win as a club but we see our job as a process and that process needs us to keep teaching.

FRIDAY’S COMPETITION

PORTLAND TIMBERS U23

Founded Nov. 11, 2008, the Portland Timbers U23 are an amateur team affiliated with the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer and serve as a development platform for the club’s first team and USL side, T2. The team consists of standout players from collegiate and youth programs from Oregon, the Northwest and throughout the country, and competes in United Soccer League (USL), League Two, formerly the Premier Development League. Since their founding, five Timbers U23 players have signed with the first team, including goalkeeper Jake Gleeson, while T2 features former Timbers U23 standout forward and 2015 USL Rookie of the Year Kharlton Belmar. The Timbers U23 assembled an historic campaign in 2010, posting a perfect 16-0-0 record during the regular season on their way to becoming the first undefeated champion in PDL history.

PORTLAND TIMBERS U23

The team moved to Salem in 2017 as the MLS Club handed over day-to-day operations of the team to Capital FC Timbers. This team always boasts an incredible array of talent and on any given day play circles around their competitors. We are thrilled to see the back of some of their players, like second overall pick in the MLS draft, Said Haji, but we are sure there will be plenty more future pros ready to give us an incredibly hard match! Look forward to a top match when the Timbers come to town.

What does TSS stand for? Every day. We are always being asked that one question. Let’s consider.

LUCIANO TRASOLINI

ONE TO WATCH:

LUCIANO TRASOLINI Luciano has played in the Whitecaps Residency, through the youth national program and is coming off an all-star year with Simon Fraser University. As last year’s Rovers’ third keeper and now fully fit, Luciano is looking to cement his place as a future professional keeper. Position: Keeper Born: April 13, 1998

As we look out over weekly academy sessions and nightly youth team practices it's easy to see that TSS stands for the young Canadian player learning to play the game properly. We stand by our unwavering belief that skill increases self esteem and confidence so your kids play the game for life. We stand for as many players as possible, staying in the game for as long as possible, in the best environments we can create. At TSS it’s about TEACHING. Teaching kids to use the ball. Teaching parents to understand the long term plan. Teaching each other to be better instructors and mentors. It is a relentless pursuit of making every child better, no matter where they end up in the game. And it's not our game, it's theirs. Teach and mentor. At TSS we feel that if that all happens then when the player finally meets a pathway, young Canadians have a chance to reach their dreams. Every part is necessary and everyone has a part to play. We know what our job is. Teach. Inspire. Develop.

SUNDAY’S COMPETITION

CALGARY FOOTHILLS FC

The champs are coming! The champs are coming! Calgary Foothills U23 join us at Swangard to renew a battle that is going into its third year. Intense, competitive and focussed on bringing players through their club into the professional ranks, Foothills are always a tough side to face. After several players from the 2018 PDL Championship squad moved on to become full professionals with the newly formed Canadian Premier League’s Calgary Cavalry, along with former coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr, the squad has been retooled and replenished again with up and coming talent aspiring to crack into the CPL. Now coached by former assistant Leon Hapgood expect a consistency from the past few years and the matches always are barn burners. Much respect to this club for all that they are doing for Canadian soccer. But not on Sunday!

Have you ever wanted to be involved in a revolution? In particular a sporting revolution? From the first moment the TSS Rovers idea hit the ground us supporters have been musing over the idea of becoming a financial part of the club. Over the winter a few Swanguardians members with experience in co-operatives and community development hatched an idea: a community investment co-op to support the Rovers dream. The idea is to give all supporters a way to financially invest in community based football and reap both a financial and a social return on investment. The Spirit of the Rovers Co-op is trying to start exactly that: a supporter revolution.. We are interested in creating a way to allow soccer supporters in the Lower Mainland become directly involved in helping young Canadian men and women achieve their dreams and build the next great generation of Canadian soccer talent. And our vehicle‌ a community investment cooperative with Vancouver TSS Rovers our first initiative! Right now, we are in the beginning stages of incorporating the cooperative. We have had lots of great discussions with people in the cooperative and investment community along with meeting regularly with Colin Elmes, William Cromack and the Vancouver TSS Rovers advisory board. As we begin this process, there is one thing we are missing‌. YOU!

This season’s TSS Rovers Women has 20 players on the roster, representing 10 different universities such as SFU, U of T, Louisiana State, University of Nebraska, and others. Simon Fraser University (SFU) has the largest representation this season as the Rovers picked up a number of recently graduated players such as NCAA All-American Jenna-lee Baxter, Allyson Dickson, Christina Dickson, Katelyn Erhardsen, Kaely Biring, and Devon Kollmyer. Stand-out striker, Emma Pringle of SFU, also returns to the Rovers after scoring 9 goals in 10 games last season and Amanda Scott joins the Rovers squad as she prepares for her first year at SFU this coming fall. “It’s been great having so many senior players on the Rovers Women this season,” says Rovers Women head coach, Kevin Booker. Booker assisted the Rovers last season and takes the helm this year. “It’s always challenging bringing players together from a variety of different university environments, particularly for a short playing season,“ continues Booker. “But the character of the players has been great. They all come with a high level of professionalism and a willingness to learn. We see nothing but good things in the seasons ahead.” While the representation from universities has been wide and varied, the youth backgrounds of these players has seen a steady consolidation. Of the 20 players on the roster, 11 of them played for the TSS FC youth program. Young players such as Kathleen Aitchison, Sophia Stevens, and Amanda Scott are all finishing up their grade 12 year with TSS FC youth

AUTOGRAPHS and yet have the opportunity to train and play with senior players on the Rovers. They take comfort in knowing that so many share their youth background at TSS FC such as Devon Kollmyer, Katie Bishop, Siena Porth, Pauline McCordic, Ellie Reid, Maya Alibudbud, Kaely Biring, Brittney Zacharuk. “We could not be happier about providing this opportunity to players who came from our youth program,” says TSS Co-Owner Brendan Quarry. “This is one of the primary reasons we started the TSS Rovers, to provide an outlet for our graduated players, as well as providing this layer of programming to the soccer community as a whole.” The Rovers Women continue their efforts in building chemistry next Wednesday, May 22 as they play a friendly match against the Vancouver Thunderbirds at 7pm on Minoru Oval in Richmond. Their first official game of the WPSL season takes place on Sunday, May 26 at Cloverdale Athletic Park as they take on Olympic Soccer Academy FC from Seattle, followed by Spokane Shadow FC on June 1.
