Antibodies

work

Antibodies, or immunoglobulins, are Y-shaped proteins manufactured by the body that help fight against foreign substances called antigens. Antigen stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies. The antibodies attach, or bind, themselves to the antigen and inactivate it.

Blood transfusions containing antigens incompatible with those in the body's own blood will stimulate the production of antibodies, which can cause serious, life-threatening reactions.

Each has two regions, constant region and variable region. The constant region is identical in all antibodies of the same isotype, but differs in the different isotypes. The variable region of the heavy chain differs depending on the B cell that produced it.

Each antibody is highly specialized to recognize just one kind of antigen.

Fab is a region on an antibody that binds to antigens; composed of one constant and one variable domain of each of the heavy and the light chain. The variable domain contains the paratope (the antigen binding site).

Lightchain There are two types of light chain, which are called lambda (λ) and kappa (κ). Each antibody contains two light chains that are always identical; only one type of light chain, κ or λ.
