Balenciaga was born in Getaria, a fishing town in the Basque province of Gipuzkoa, Spain on January 21,1895. His mother was a seamstress, and as a child Balenciaga often spent time with her as she worked. At the age of twelve, he began work as the apprentice of a tailor. When he was a teenager, his patron sent him to Madrid, where he was formally trained in tailoring

Balenciaga is notable as one of the few couturiers in fashion history who could use their own hands to design, cut, and sew the models which symbolized the height of his artistry. Vanessa Lee

Cristรณbal Balenciaga opens his first boutique in San Sebastiรกn, Spain.

The Spanish Civil War forces him to close his stores, so he moves to Paris and opens his house of Balenciaga on the Avenue George V.

After WWII was when Balenciaga became a great fashion innovator.

Nicolas Ghesquière took fragments of ideas from the Houses achieves to show the true Balenciaga spirit. Not only has he turned the flailing house back into a dominant force in the retail world, but he has the fashion world at the edge of there seats, anxious to see more of his avant-garde & architecturally shaped pieces which explore new & unconventional materials.

Throughout his time with the company, Wang managed to pay respectful homage to the house’s founder, Cristóbal Balenciaga, with recurring brand signatures like cocoon coats, molded peplums, and petal skirts. Some of his sporty taste showed through in riffs on mesh material for resort and spring 2015, and exposed zippers and vibrant colors for fall 2014. Those acid yellow coats aside, Wang’s palette at Balenciaga was consistently black, white, nude, pink, blue, and lavender.

Started in March 2016, Demna Gvasalia presented his first Balenciaga Women fashion show for the F/W16. This collection was a re-imagining of the work of Cristobal Balenciaga – a wardrobe of absolute contemporaneity and realism imbued with the attitude of his haute couture. FIRST “IT” BAG 2000s

Nicolas Ghesquière designed the now-classic motorcycle bag. This lightweight handbag combined soft leather with studs, buckles and zippers pulled by long lariat tassels and became an “It Bag” after editor’s and model’s admiration and publicity.

ROBOT LEGGINGS S/S 07

Balenciaga’s iconic robot leggings were created of hundreds of individual metal components to give an armour-like look. Beyonce famously wore them to perform at the 2007 BET Awards.

Cate Blanchett wore a recreated dress originally designed by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1967. the ‘Balenciaga Edition’ line, for which the design studio selected 12 designs and six pieces of jewellery from the house archives of Cristobal Balenciaga’s haute couture collections, dating between 1945 and 1967.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

PRISM Balenciaga is about showing transparency through fashion – each garment designed is represented as what it is or what it was beforehand, and translating that same philosophy into their furniture collection, is Prism, Balenciaga’s Summer 2018 Furniture Collection. First launched in the Mesquite Sand Dunes, expresses its primary material, glass. Then the pieces are layered with dichroic film which expresses Balenciaga’s creative perspective surrouded by bright opaque edges which give the element of unexpectedness.
