SWINBURNE’S STUDENT HOUSING The brief of this assignment was to create a town planning documentation for Swinburne’s student housing complexes in Hawthorn, Victoria. The concept was to create a set of modular dwellings, that would incorporate a community village for international students from different ethnic backgrounds. The idea was to help these residents come together to live, study, and socialize, as well as providing many opportunities to connect with similar pupils, making them feel welcomed and safe, giving the students a sense of being home.

POTTERY MUSEUM The brief of this assignment was to create a sustainable museum that would display pottery for the neighbouring community. The idea was to create a ceramic facade that would assist with the shading from the north and west sun, to enhance the sustainability of the building. The project also challenged our knowledge with sustainable design, making us consider how we can create such a large building with the use of minimal energy. Thermal energy and recycled water systems were incorporated throughout the building, as well as high ceilings and concrete mass to ensure the building can remain cool throughout the day, without much use of industrial systems.

THE S-HUB The brief for our Capstone project was to retrofit an existing building to something that we think will benefit the future of the community in light of COVID-19. My concept was to create a study hub cafe that is COVID friendly with government regulations, to help increase the mental health and wellbeing of university students in suburban areas. The development of The S-Hub aims to bring sustainable and biophilic design, to create a space where humans can interact and connect with nature, focusing on increasing their productivity and motivation.

EXHIBITION

BOTANICAL GARDENS EXHIBITION The brief required us to create a walk-through exhibition that would be constructed within the botanical gardens. My concept focused on manipulating light and shadows to create an interesting experience when walking towards the glass box lookout, which overhangs above the water. This project also demonstrated our skills with hand sketching perspectives and technical drawings, while also allowing us to explore our model making abilities.

PAPER MODEL

MODEL MAKING AND SKETCHES The idea of this task was to help us brainstorm ideas on possible exhibition dwellings, while also helping us understand the use of shadows and light, and the depth created through sketching. The requirement was to create the models out of paper for quick and flexible ideas, while also using only two mediums; graphite pencils and fine liner. This task also helped us experiment with the idea of manipulating shadows, whether it was through cut outs, or the angle of the light source.

NOTEBOOKS AND BOOKMARKS

NOTEBOOKS The brief was to create vector illustration notebooks, with matching bookmarks, for our chosen theme. The theme I chose was landmarks, due to my great interest in travelling, and learning about different cultures and attractions. My intended visual approach was to create non-outlined vector illustrations, which was inspired from Nikolai Senin’s artworks, as this style creates a minimal and stylistic composition. I chose specific landmarks that I thought had an interesting and compelling structure, allowing for the illustrations to look more appealing and detailed.
