CONTAINER HOUSE CLIENT: LUCY LIU
The living room area is seen after the entrance. Timber panels divide the space and partially conceal the floating staircase leading up to the family room. The dining, kitchen, and laundry areas are located on the same floor as the living room, extending the length of the container. A powder room for guests is cleverly hidden under the staircase.
The family room has an interior balcony that looks over the dining room below, giving the illusion of space and height for the dining area. A corridor spans the length of the upper floor, leading from the family room to the master bedroom.
Concept: Geometric Subtraction Lucy Liu is an American actress and artist. She lives between New York and California with her toddler son. Lucy lives separately from her art studio which is located in New Jersey.
Brief: This project applies the concept of geometric subtraction to design a residential dwelling for the client. The constraints given are that only shipping containers can be used to build the core structure.
The master bedroom has a stairwell that leads to a studiospace below. The studio serves as the client’s work space and storage for her art.
Site: Seeing that the client has a studio in New Jersey (close to her New York apartment), the selected site is located in California’s Beverly Hills suburbs. In contrast to the client’s West Coast apartment dwelling, the project proposes a landed property on its own private lot. The structure is also designed with the client’s work and family needs in mind. Structure & Materials: The overall design features cantilevered sections, sky-lights, and openings that receed and protrude in different parts of the building. The containers are concealed behind layers of insulation and weatherproofed stucco. Timber slats on the facade add some warmth to the building.
Concept: Organic Layering Diptyque is a French fragrance house based in Paris. They are a manufacturer and retailer of scented candles, fragrances, and products for personal and home use. The location for this retail lot is in the Sunway Pyramid shopping mall, located in the city-suburb of Sunway City.
The store is designed based on the organic forms found in nature and the depictions of it in the paintings of Claude Monet, a French impressionist painter. The walls are coated in metallic marbled wallpaper while marble tiles and timber cover the floorspace. The countertops are made of stone and are custom-sized to fit the store and the concept. Partitions feature a motif of curved timber panels, overlapping and intertwining for an organic effect.
FURNITURE DESIGN Concept: Floating geometry The Surface Chair is designed based on the conventional study chair with an attached work surface. This redesign serves to improve upon the aesthetics of the study chair, while pairing the features of a seat and table.
THE SURFACE CHAIR
LIBRARY FURNITURE SERIES
The Surface Chair is part of a modular furniture system. When two or more chairs are arranged together, all surface areas are enlarged, adding versatility to the furniture space. In a library setting, this modular aspect of the chair is useful in open study areas where furniture can be rearranged to suit groups or clusters of users. The single-user design also makes it versatile enough to line corridors, walls, windows, and tight spaces. The chair is also lightweight yet sturdy as it is made from a single metal tubing and two flat surfaces of which the material can range from metal to timber and stone.
The Surface Chair removes unnecessary bulk and features a streamlined structure. Designed as a single-seater, the chair can also function as part of a modular system when multiple pieces are arranged together. The chair is also available in a variety of finishes and can be used in any setting, from residential to commercial applications.
The Surface Chair is minimalist, versatile, and affordable. It is a piece of furniture that can be tailored to suit any user’s tastes. As a piece of furniture for a library, the chair will be priced reasonably so as to cater to a larger volume of users. The Surface Chair brings aesthetic to an affordable price point, and serves as a welcomed addition to the conventional designs of study chairs.
