No Rain, No Flowers Diploma Collection Concept Vanessa Schreiner January 2021

The process of slowing down, of creating, and the connection to the environment and nature motivated me to engage with a life and work philosophy of deceleration and mindfulness.

In my diploma collection "No Rain, No Flowers," I explore the protecting function of fashion in different aspects through a thoughtful production process and the extension of lifecycles by using already existing resources. The collection aims to demonstrate society's impact on clothes, the contrast towards today's overconsumption, and the waste that is the result.

A central element of the outfits are used broken umbrellas that I have deconstructed, reassembled, and re-introduced as components for constructing new garments.

The research process led me to source personal photos of my home, childhood, and of my grandmothers. The necessity of the post-war austerity made them appreciate the simple life and take care of their possessions better. It's such a contrast to the hyper-consumerism of today, where everything is disposable. My adoration of the past is evident in the yearning for a better future, and my rejection of mass consumption and trend-driven purchases, so I have a quietly conscientious desire to make a more authentic world through my designs.

To escape a fast-paced world, independent from influences or society and to build a shelter was the driving motor behind my diploma collection. My collection is about the relationship between people and their surrounding environment.

It is an invitation to revisit my childhood and it represents an open window to memories and emotions. In this reality, you slow down, take a deep breath and feel safe for a moment. To build a shelter where you can be unseen and still observe the outside gives you privacy and the opportunity to get lost in your world away from interventions.

In my design process, I experimented with the design of umbrellas in different ways. I was inspired by their general function, their 3D shape, and the shape of the textile once the metal spokes were removed and the seams were cut open. The outfits consist of various umbrellas in different quantity, color, pattern, and shape that I carefully selected. By cutting the umbrella's triangular parts open or off and draping the fabric on the body, I adjusted the function and modified the look completely.

Inspired by Issey Miyake's experimental pattern-making together with sustainable thinking, I tried to create contemporary outfits using vintage, handcrafted, and one-of-a-kind umbrellas containing memories and emotions.
