GREATER VANCOUVER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

VISION

When it comes to your health, you deserve to work with the best!

FROMTHE THECEO GVCC CEO FROM

John McDonagh

GVCC, CEO/President

Being Business Savvy It’s nearly mid-way through February as I write this and by the time you read it we’ll be nearly a quarter of the way through 2019. While the pace never seems to slow, your Chamber is up to the challenge with valuable programming you’ll want to make plans to take in. First is the Spring Workshop series, once again focusing on the value and best practices of a strong social media platform for your business. In 2016 we introduced the topic and since had many request to re-visit the topic. Each Tuesday and Thursday in March (and on April 5th for our mid- and North County businesses) you’ll have the opportunity to sharpen your skills. The continuation of our Ready, Set, Go! Workplace Wellness series kicks off in April. This lunchtime discussion is designed to provide ideas for your frontline staffers to bring back to the workplace affording everyone the opportunity to embrace wellness at work.

2019 brings fresh faces to our Small Business Assistance Program (SBAP). We are very excited to have Ronnie Noize of the DIY Marketing Center as our facilitator of the “10-week Fast Trac to Small Business” series. Additionally, Paul Montague our Business Services Coordinator will serve as counselor to the many walk-in clients looking for direction and support for starting a business. As you receive this, a group of us will have just returned from our annual visit to Olympia to visit with legislators about policy issues most important to Businesses in SW Washington. In addition to state wide policy, we are also tracking closely the Stronger Vancouver initiative in the city of Vancouver, as well as the I-5 Replacement Bridge effort. After all that learning you’ll need a break and can join with other members March 12th at 5:00 PM for our Business After Hours hosted by Innovative Services NW. See you there.

FROM THE CHAIR

Amy O’Hara

GVCC,Chairwoman of the Board of Directors

Synergetic Times Ahead There is a word that, while lovely, has been pretty overused in corporate-speak: synergy. But I still love the word. Because when you are there for it, when you genuinely experience it, you know it. You feel it.

That magic – that happening of the whole becoming greater than the parts? Synergy. Clearly our new partnership with Trust Tree is a winner and I can hardly wait for the next three events this year and the events to come years beyond that.

Which brings me to WILL…

Thank you to the following sponsors who made this event perfect: Presenting Sponsor, Horenstein Law Group, Title Sponsor, Columbia Credit Union, WILL/WAY Connections & Media Sponsor, The Columbian, Welcome Reception Sponsor, HAPO Community Credit Union, Social Hour Sponsor, WellHaven Pet Health and Supporting Sponsors, Columbia Bank, Erik Runyan Jewelers, Point North Consulting, Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt, and BergerABAM. A special “Thank You” to Kate Singh Photography and WareHouse ’23.

WILL (Women in Leadership Lecture Series) debuted a year ago and has emerged as a signature GVCC event for good reasons. The first of this year’s quarterly events took place on January 29th at ilani and considering the daunting task of trying to live up to the reputation, it did not disappoint. With two spectacular speakers the evening was captivating. From the great venue, food and florals to the incredible sponsors to a host that could give Oprah a run for her money… add an engaged, energetic group of attendees it worked on every level.

Connections for Your Business

Join us at one of our upcoming SW WA Leads & Needs & North County Edition morning events, or in the evening at a Business After Hours social.

WORKFORCE SW WA & WORKSOURCE I recently attended a talk by Scott Bailey, our local regional Employment Security Department Labor Economist, who mentioned that unemployment rates nationally and locally are at their lowest levels in decade. In other words, we have a very tight labor market.

The perfect opportunities to test out your latest icebreakers.

To fill jobs, employers are hiring from within, promoting up, and needing to look to new labor pools for talent. One area that remained stagnant for many years during the past 9 years of economic recovery has been youth employment. Workforce Southwest Washington (WSW) and WorkSource have programs to connect youth with employers and are looking for employers to promote and participate in these programs.

Networking Made Easy

The first is the third annual Youth Employment Summit (YES), on March 19th at the Clark County Event Center. With over 600 high school juniors and seniors expected to attend, we are looking for employers who want to host tables to share company information or info about needed training and open jobs, interview potential candidates, and provide hands-on demonstrations to attendees. If you want to hire high school grads, or simply give them an idea of what you are looking for in new hires, register at no charge at https://bit.ly/2BArYwi.

Join us at one of our upcoming SW WA Leads & Needs & North County Edition morning events, or in the evening at a Business After Hours social.

The second program is SummerWorks. In short, SummerWorks is a summer internship program, funded by WSW, to provide motivated youth, ages 16-21 in Clark, Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties with opportunities to get 90 hours of work experience and mentoring over the summer with great employers. The SummerWorks program handles the payroll, covers wages, insurance and taxes for 90 hours of work with your company, and you get potential new hires to introduce to your company. For more information, contact Becky Mohagen at becky.mohagen@ esd112.org or 360-952-3453.

The perfect opportunities to test out your latest icebreakers.

One last item. WorkSource has Incumbent Worker training grants for qualified employers who pay for training for their employees that results in certifications, promotions, wage increases, or increases the employability of their employees. Funded training must be completed by the end of May. Contact Paul Montague at pmontague@vancouverusa.com or 360-567-1081 for more information.

NETWORKING TRAINING SCHEDULE

the Marketing Coach, DIY Marketing Center

You know how most people would say their greatest fear is public speaking? Not me! Give me a mic and I will talk for hours, unless and until I have a good reason to stop. No, my greatest fear used to be walking into a room full of strangers. Which is why I am now qualified to teach you about networking. I’m an introvert, and I used to hate networking. But even back in the days before I worked for myself, I knew I had to get over it. Because an influential network was necessary to my success in the business world. And that is still true for me as a business owner. As it is for you. To conquer my fear of networking, I hustled. I took classes, read books, and got advice from the most connected people I could find. And that’s how I learned that I didn’t actually hate networking. I hated not knowing what to do at networking events. Not knowing how to introduce myself. Not knowing how to work a room. So I learned. And became an expert networker. Now I am comfortable networking anywhere, anytime, with anyone. And you can be, too. Because the GVCC is sponsoring three of my networking trainings this quarter. Are these trainings

right for you? I’m going to guess that at least one of them will rock your world. Even if you consider yourself quite the social butterfly. Even if you’re comfortable and happy in the local networking scene. Because everyone I ever trained (even other networking experts) found these classes helpful. And you? I guarantee that you will learn at least one thing that makes networking easier or more profitable. You’ve got my famous “Two Cups of Coffee” Guarantee, that’s right, GUARANTEE: If you don’t feel that the time you spent in this class is worth the cost of admission, I will buy you and a friend a cup of coffee. Full disclosure: Most people say that these classes are amazing! Check out the dozens of reviews on Facebook, Google and Yelp.
