WELCOME TO THE VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S 105TH SEASON

Every day for the past 105 years, the musicians of the VSO have connected to people through music. That’s what continues to excite us today: using the power of live music to bring people together. To share, to experience, to be moved, to learn, and to grow. Our world needs great music, and the VSO and the VSO School of Music are here to make it.

This season we’re bringing you huge masterpieces from the classical repertoire: two superb Mahler symphonies, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Verdi’s Requiem, Stravinsky’s Petrouchka, Haydn’s Creation, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, and others, including a British Columbia premiere of John Adams’ game-changing masterwork Harmonielehre

We’re presenting premieres, contemporary Canadian works, and beloved pieces that resonate deeply with me: who I am as a person, and as a musician. Early on in my career I dove deep into the symphonic music of Prokofiev. His colourful music, with some of the most beautiful melodies ever written, are still very much at the core of my repertoire. I’m thrilled to finally be sharing his music with the amazing musicians of the VSO and our Vancouver fans.

Along with the great pillars of classical repertoire, this season will also bring some of the most talented and renowned artists to our concert halls: Yo-Yo Ma, Steven Isserlis, Augustin Hadelich, Sarah Chang, Vadim Gluzman, and so many more.

I am excited to pass the baton to some remarkable guest conductors, Leonard Slatkin, Anna Rakitina, Shiyeon Sung, JoAnn Falletta, Gemma New, and others.

With holiday concerts, a fun and entertaining Pops series, the best in Canadian classical music, and simply wonderful pieces in the orchestral repertoire, this season at the VSO truly has something for everyone. I’ll see you in the concert hall!
