are screened, trained, and equipped to provide this dynamic and diverse mentoring program. The training for a volunteer mentor is initially 10 hours with a mid-year training in January of two hours. Our mentors are business professionals, carpenters, stay-at-home mothers, college students, business owners, and everyone in between. One of the strengths of T1L1 is the diverse mentor teams that we send into the schools. Adult volunteers spend an average of two to three hours per week mentoring—one hour in the classroom, one hour preparation time with their team, and travel time which varies.”
Vivian Mattila Walikainen is blessed by six children who keep her learning, growing, and slightly off-balance. She and her husband of 25 years have three grandchildren, and Vivian recently graduated with her bachelor’s degree in human development from Warner Pacific College in Portland. She currently is a substitute teacher.
