El resurgimiento del Glasgow Rangers empezó incluso antes de tocar fondo. The resurgence of Glasgow Rangers began even before it hit the bottom. Under a corporate restructuring program, it formally ceased to be Glasgow Rangers and assumed its new name: The Rangers Football Club. For its supporters and half the city of Glasgow, it remained the same club it had always been. “As every fan knows, Rangers is Rangers – it always has been and it always will be.”

Since the 2012/2013 season, the team has bounced back to its previous position, as befitting one of the most successful clubs in the country: champion of 54 leagues, 33 cups and 27 league cups. What more could be expected from a club more used to playing in the Champions League than the fourth division and one half of the world-famous Glaswegian rivalry between Rangers (traditionally Protestant) and Celtic (of Catholic origin).

However, like any good tale of redemption, it was necessary to start from the bottom. The new club’s pleas to be allowed to play in the Premiership were rebuffed by the other teams. Its path back to the Scottish footballing elite would require it to play every weekend at some of Scotland’s poorest stadiums. It would have to work its way back up. Despite losing its star players and facing clear difficulties in signing players, the team received immense support from its fans. Its stadium was consistently 84% full, season after season. Some 200,000 fans—most without tickets—once traveled to support the team in the UEFA Cup final in 2009. How could they turn their backs on it now? Rangers were promoted to the third division in record time, and then the second. In just two years, it was knocking on the doors of the first division. Although it failed on its first attempt, perseverance saw it secure its return in the 2016/2017 season. It finished third in the last two seasons. Now, coached by the legendary Stephen Gerrard, it is once again battling Celtic for the league. Rangers has reclaimed its place at the top of Scottish football, a place of which it had been deprived by poor management.
