PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE “We cannot choose our external circumstances, but we can always choose how we respond to them.” -Epictetus Reflecting upon my message last January and anticipating the celebration surrounding the Park Board’s 75th anniversary in 2020, I thought to myself “the 20’s sure didn’t come roaring in again the way I thought they would.” We can do all the planning we want, but when something like a worldwide pandemic strikes, everyone faces life in a way they didn’t expect. So more than ever, during our 75th anniversary year, I am extremely proud that Valpo Parks, supported by a new City Administration and Leadership Team, Park Board, Parks Foundation and a network of wonderful partnerships within our business community, quickly, creatively and safely adapted to everchanging statewide mandates and circumstances. We were able to open the door to opportunities, offering our neighbors, families (and even our four-legged canine friends) programs and places to gather, exercise, and enjoy nature and recreation in new and innovative ways. And yes, there have been disappointments, anxiety, and cancellations of personal and community events and programs along the way, but we feel the satisfaction of knowing that our response has demonstrated care, concern, compassion, fairness and understanding for everyone affected.
CITY LEADERSHIP

CITY COUNCIL Peter Anderson Evan Costas Robert Cotton George Douglas Jack Pupillo Diana Reed Casey Schmidt
BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Christa Emerson, President Kevin Cornett Mark Hardwick Kay Magnetti Martin Sonnenberg Tim Warner
Remarkably, we’ve had stability in many of our traditional programs and created innovations such as virtual concerts, social distance runs, modified ice-skating lessons and venue protocols, to name a few. Open per the Governor’s safety guidelines, Valpo Parks Golf at Forest Park and Creekside have experienced the highest number of rounds and revenue in 15 years! Our Creekside Classic Golf Outing for kids was our safest and most successful fundraiser in its 18-year history. I must take the opportunity to hold up our staff team, led by John Seibert, to the highest praise for their response, dedication, and attitude amidst some of the heaviest personal and professional challenges many have faced. Rogers-Lakewood Park had its highest attendance season and highest revenue year in more than 10 years! Guests enjoyed the great outdoors with paddle boats, disc golf, fishing, hiking, biking and picnicking with family and friends. ValPAWaiso Dog Park opened in May of 2020 with expectations of selling 300 memberships the first year. We have now cleared our wait list for 600 memberships and counting! Will Park, and Banta neighborhood parks have new playground equipment, and the basketball court at Jessee-Pifer Park has a new and improved basketball court with vibrant markings for pickle ball, foursquare and hopscotch (classic activities I enjoyed and am happy to see being enjoyed by this generation), thanks to our partnership with Maggie Clifton, the City’s Community Engagement Director and the Valparaiso Redevelopment Commission. The plan for 2020 was to conduct our five-year Master Plan with ongoing task forces for youth sports facilities, senior services, and skate park development. The pandemic didn’t stop us from making significant headway with this. Although the process has been modified, using Zoom and Teams, to hold virtual meetings, along with some socially distanced in-person presentations, our staff, Park Board, Foundation Board, City Team, and over 1400 citizens have been engaged in these discussions and a survey process. We look forward to an exciting future for Valpo Parks and our community with brighter days ahead of us in 2021! Sincerely, Christa Emerson Christa Emerson, Park Board President

what's new at the park
Valpo Parks is excited to welcome changes to the park in 2021! New piers and dock have been replaced on Loomis Lake including an ADA accessible fishing pier near the Program Center. The old piers have been repurposed to provide additional access points to the lake for recreational purposes. Thanks to private donations we welcomed two new additions to the park. A kayak launch will provide easy access to those who enjoy paddling on Loomis Lake. An 18-foot Duffy electric boat will offer memorable lake cruises for social gatherings starting fall 2021. We look forward to making continued improvements to the park and providing additional outdoor amenities for people of all ages to enjoy at Rogers-Lakewood Park!
group hayrides & campfires Enjoy an autumn evening at Rogers-Lakewood Park as you ride along on a tractor-drawn hay wagon. Then gather around a glowing campfire. Bring your marshmallows. This is a great outing for youth groups, scouts, service clubs, birthday parties and parent organizations.

fees, refunds & receipts
REGISTER EARLY It is important to register early to assure your place in our programs. In addition to registering for your regular favorite classes/programs, why not experience something new this year? If your class is full, we can place you on the wait list and if there is a cancellation we will contact you. Payment is not required until we place you in the class.
The Park Board has adopted a policy of the resident discount user fees at most facilities and for most programs. This policy apportions an equalized higher fee to our non-resident participants. The higher fee contributes to the overall operations financing of the Park Department on an equitable basis with Valparaiso City residents who contribute by paying property taxes. Standard fees are offered to those residing within or owning property within Valparaiso City limits.
LATE REGISTRATION If a program deadline has passed, please contact the Park Office. In most cases we are able to accommodate those still wishing to participate. A $10 per person and per program late registration fee will apply. CANCELLATION POLICY Valpo Parks reserves the right to cancel or alter a class or program due to limited registration or circumstances beyond its control. In this instance, enrollment fees will be refunded.
participation & photos PARTICIPATION By participating in park programs you assume the risk of injury and you agree to hold harmless the Valpo Parks Department, the City of Valparaiso and its agents and forfeit the right to make any claim for monetary damages against Valpo Parks and the City of Valparaiso if you or your property is damaged while participating in or attending a program or while in a park facility. PHOTOGRAPH OR VIDEOTAPE
FEE ASSISTANCE Fee Assistance is available to reduce the basic fee for most Park Youth Programs. Fee assistance is based on family income and the number of members in the family. To apply, simply inquire when registering for a youth activity. A parent will be required to complete an application for assistance. RECEIPTS Receipts are automatically generated through online registration. Please refer to this brochure as a record of program dates and times for your reference.
