For a Better Us
With a focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility, Valley of the Sun YMCA nurtures the potential of every child and teen, improves our community’s health and well-being, and provides opportunities to give back and support neighbors. At Valley of the Sun YMCA we are finding solutions. With community partners such as Arizona State University and Dignity Health, we are implementing research-based programs that work. We are providing families in our area with access to essential services such as water safety classes, healthy meals, and quality childcare. We are extending a hand to disenfranchised community members, ensuring all have a place to belong—a place to find essential human connection and be part of a greater purpose. All of these programs, services and initiatives help us to become “a better us.”

Social Responsibility DROWNING PREVENTION
We offer free and reduced-cost swim lessons, water safety and drowning awareness education programs for youth and adults most in need.
CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP
The Y is closing the academic achievement gap with pilot programs that improve students’ educational readiness, engagement and outcomes, and contribute to their personal growth. We have programs that range from infancy to early adulthood.
Y-ACHIEVERS PROGRAM This program helps youth seeking alternative education, leadership development, or internship opportunities. REACH AND RISE MENTORING We also offer a signature mentoring program that connects at-risk youth with a positive role model who offers advice, leadership and positive approaches to overcoming risk factors. All of our mentors complete an in-depth training before they are paired with a mentee.
REDUCING CHRONIC DISEASE
We offer financial assistance, subsidized and free memberships to our local military families, seniors and community members in need to provide them with the opportunity to develop a healthy lifestyle through our many wellness programs. YMCA DIABETES PREVENTION PROGRAM The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program provides a supportive environment where people at risk for diabetes can work with others in a small group setting to learn how to adopt healthy habits to reduce the chances of developing this disease. Research suggests that programs like the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program can reduce the number of cases of type 2 diabetes by almost 60%.
PREPARING YOUNG ADULTS TO BE SELF-SUFFICIENT
We provide free programs such as Teen Leaders Club and workforce development workshops that help build confidence, social skills and self-esteem. We also provide affordable youth sports, after school recreation and summer camp programs that help them build relationships and develop teamwork and sportsmanship.
YOUTH & GOVERNMENT The Youth & Government program is a model legislative program that allows middle and high school students the opportunity to learn the legislative and judicial processes through hands-on conferences and activities. Each December, Youth & Government students take over the Arizona State Capitol building to debate bills, elect program leadership, and work together to resolve the issues facing Arizona.
TEEN LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Leadership and academic enrichment programs, along with our dedicated efforts to close the academic achievement gap for low-income youth, ensure that every child has an opportunity to envision and pursue the best possible future.
