rom the outside looking in, The Bearded Barber is as it appears—a fully functional oldfashioned barber shop and shoe shine stand. It’s what lies behind the bookcase with the symbol of a blindfolded tiger along the brick wall that’s the real surprise. The bookcase disguises a secret door which grants special access to those with membership privileges into a wine cellar lined with members-only lockers.

Once the cellar is cleared, guests are transported into a 1920s Prohibition-style speakeasy bar and lounge.

Co-owners Brian Antenbring and Keith Walashek, who also owns Amped Coffee Co., have been thoughtfully planning every last detail for over a year to create the ultimate speakeasy experience open to both members and non-members when it opens this spring. Brick walls, stained-glass windows, copper ceilings, iron lighting, and a restored 18-seat hand-carved bar from London, frames the lounge space with Chesterfield chairs and an 1800s player piano that has been completely restored. member’s only upper chamber includes an additional bar, space for private events and a member’s only patio. On a tour of the new space while under construction, Valley Vibe asked Antenbring how it all came to be. “There’s sort of a cult following and a secrecy and mystery to them all,” he said, adding “It’s a hobby of mine and I can’t wait for this place to open.” As part of the full speakeasy experience, the bar will be stocked with unique liquors including bourbons and cognacs—along with an exceptionally rated Louis XIII Cognac displayed in a Baccarat crystal bottle for those special occasions. Wine lovers can expect unique selections that can be sampled in flights, and along with Guinness, a selection of microbrews will be on tap for beer connoisseurs. As for food, the menu will feature artisanstyle pizzas and tapas-style sharing plates.

Director of Operations Kelly Stewart has stocked the bar with unique liquors, bourbons and cognacs, including a Louis XIII Cognac pictured here in a Baccarat crystal bottle.

Fast Lobster To Go BY VALLEY VIBE STAFF WRITERS

info@valleyvibenews.com

F

ounders of the fastconcept custom-made salad restaurant, Salad and Go, are bringing another concept to 19th Avenue and Pinnacle Peak Road, offering wild-caught Maine and Canadian lobster meals to go.

Maine and Canada to supply the chain’s six Valley locations. And, much like Salad and Go, customers will use the drive-thru or process their own payment at the walk-up ordering stations.

Angie’s Lobster offers a simple menu of lobster rolls, fried lobster fingers, french fries and drink choices of lemonade and iced tea. Besides being able to order and receive a lobster meal in a fast fashion, the meals are affordably priced at $10.

Founders Tony and Roushan Christofellis created Angie’s Lobster to honor their late mother, Angie, a hardworking immigrant and single mother worked in seafood restaurants in Boston her entire life, before eventually owning her own restaurant.

According to the privately owned company’s website, the limited menu allows for lobster to be ordered in large volume directly from

The opening of Angie’s Lobster is helping to close the gap on its affordability, much like the way the founders say Angie lived: simple and efficient.

Construction is in progress and an Angie’s spokesperson told Valley Vibe a May opening is targeted.

The North Phoenix location will be the second in the Valley. The Stillery made its debut in Arizona when its Chandler location opened roughly a year ago. “We’re a restaurant first and foremost, but we’ll have live music every evening including acoustic acts during dinner and band performances Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons,” Coowner Steve Sargent told Valley Vibe. Meet the Alpacas

New Desert Hills Farm Open for Visits

Get a chance to meet Danica (left) and Isabella (right) the during a visit at the Cactus Hills Alpaca Farm in Desert Hills. BY KAREN GOVEIA

W

ith their long necks, slender bodies, doe eyes and soft fleece, the alpaca is one sweet-natured farm animal you don’t see often in our parts. And, that’s exactly what led Nichole Baumgartner to open Cactus Hills

MARCH 2022

Alpaca Farm on her 2-acre property in Desert Hills. The mother of four said she really wanted alpacas on their property when her children reached the age where they could help care for the animals. “I fell in love with them just by visiting other farms and knew I wanted some of our own,” Baumgartner said.

Baumgartner and her husband Jeremy started the farm with three females: Danica, Gigi, and Isabella, all of which they selected at Plum Creek Alpacas in Prescott Valley. They’ve since added Allie and Cici to their herd, which will expand even more during 2022 now that three of them are pregnant.

ADVENTURE V I B E S |

The best part of it all, Baumgartner says, is sharing the alpacas with the community through farm visits, photo shoots, as well as taking the alpacas to different locations for both fun and educational purposes. Known for their calm, gentle, yet curious nature, Baumgartner said, “Alpacas are just so special and different, and not an animal people get to see every day so I love sharing them and I try to share facts about Alpacas with everyone who comes to visit.” Each alpaca has her own personality. Baumgartner shared, “One of my girls, Danica, is the most social. Unlike most alpacas, she doesn’t mind being pet, hugged and likes to give kisses. Most alpacas do not like to be petted on the head, but they do not mind neck scratches as long as you are giving them treats.”

What to Expect on a Farm Visit Private visits can be booked in groups of 10 or less on weekday and weekend mornings, and visitors can choose half hour or one-hour time slots. Guests will learn facts about the alpacas, feed and pet them, and have the opportunity to walk them on a leash. Besides scheduled visits, arrangements can be made to bring the alpacas to you for your next party, special occasion, or event. Private photo shoots with the alpacas can also be booked.

Alpaca Fun Facts Alpacas are usually raised and farmed for their fiber. They produce a luxurious wool that is hypoallergenic, moisture wicking, heat retaining and fire retardant. They have to be sheared once a year. In Arizona that happens in April. Alpacas make a humming noise. They do this when they are stressed, happy, concerned or for no reason at all. It has been described as a musical purring. Alpacas spit! It usually happens amongst each other when they are competing for treats. A full-grown alpaca will weigh anywhere from 100 to 200 pounds. Alpacas are usually very docile, curious and intelligent. SOURCE: CACTUS HILLS ALPACA FARMS

PBA is a business-networking group founded in 2002 by area business leaders. We also believe in giving back to our community by way of community service projects and fundraisers for local charities. Our focus in these activities is to help the area children and schools. Since its inception, the PBA has a growing membership. What they say…

“Terry was a referral from a very picky friend of mine and I am very grateful for him and his whole crew. I am someone who has owned properties, and have had quite a few Realtors. I know what a bad Realtor looks like, and Terry is not one of them. This had to have been the smoothest closings I have ever had. Of all the Realtors in the past, Terry and his team are the best, by far. Thank you so much, Terry, for your professionalism and quick responses.”

What they say…

“It was a pleasure working with Kathleen. We bought our home pretty much remotely during COVID-19 so Kathleen was our eyes, ears, and legs through the whole process. She was thorough and prompt at getting us all the necessary documents and setting up the home inspections. She was always available when we called and responded to our questions. Home buying is stressful at the best of times, Kathleen was compassionate and has a good sense of humor. Thanks Kathleen, for your super service!”

Summer-izing Your Winter Home “So many Snowbirds, so little freezer space.” That’s the first bumper sticker I saw when I moved here. Not nice, but it made me giggle. Me, I love snowbirds—and to prove it, here’s a checklist to help get your winter home “summerized” while you’re gone.

dishwasher, to minimize utility bills. Remove batteries from remotes, clocks, and everything else, EXCEPT the smoke detectors. Should you turn the water off? Yes, as long as there’s water to the landscaping, but take these precautions: Turn water heat to “OFF,” not “pilot” or “vacation,” or you could cook the water heater.

Take all food with you, even non-perishables. If a critter happens to sneak in, you’ll be glad you did. Clean appliances like toasters and ovens, too. Empty trash and wash out waste baskets and garbage cans. Run the dishwasher and wipe up any water in the bottom. Your nose will be glad you did! Do not suspend pest control. The bugs don’t know you’re away! Set A/C at 85 degrees and change the filters. If you don’t, the heat could crack cabinets, drywall, and even windows. Try to have the system serviced before you leave and the condensate lines blown. Set your fridge to the highest setting and leave an open jug of water on both sides. Turn off the breakers to anything that won’t need power, like the microwave, range, and

Have someone come in and turn on the water once a month, run all faucets, flush toilets and run a quick cycle in the washer to prevent the traps from drying out. Fill 5-gallon buckets of water (one for every bathroom and one in the kitchen) to keep moisture in the house. Place them in the tub/shower and the kitchen sink to prevent rings on the flooring. Add a little vegetable oil in your toilets and put plastic wrap over them to slow down evaporation. Choose colored wrap to avoid… well, you know! If your main water shut-off valve is outside, remove the handle to minimize the chance of knuckleheads doing what knuckleheads do. Enjoy your time away from Arizona, and when you come back, bring your friends and family! So many Snowbirds, so many great real estate deals!
