Pet Anxiety: The Struggle is Real BY CHERYL RAHAL, D.V.M. (With sidenotes from Toby the clinic kitty)
P
acing, barking, trembling and hiding. If this sounds like your dog during loudnoise events such as fireworks and thunderstorms, it’s likely a case of doggy anxiety. It can also happen during a change in your pet’s routine. Now that quarantine is over and many pet owners are heading back to the office, returning to social routines and spending less time at home, here at the clinic we have been seeing more pets showing signs of separation anxiety. Fear not, there are many things that we can do to help our pets with their anxiety. Products like Thundershirt apply a comforting pressure to your dog like a hug, much like a weighted blanket. There is a natural product (in diffuser or collar form) called Adaptil, which may help dogs to feel reassured and relaxed in
fearful situations. Composure Pro, an over-the-counter chew, may help support calm behavior and brain health. CBD oil can also help with your pets anxiety, but some pets are very sensitive to THC, so make sure you are using a hemp or other CBD oil that is THC-free. If anxiety is severe, there are medications you can talk to your veterinarian about. Crate training is a great way to help pets feel safe in their own space. Special treats and toys to keep them occupied in the crate and a calming environment helps your dog get used to and enjoy being in their crate. Talking to your dog can help them focus on something other than their own anxiety. Of course, lots of rewards and reassurance helps, too. Dr. Cheryl Rahal is a doctor of veterinary medicine at The Pet Wellness Center in North Phoenix. Her sidekick, Toby, spends his days alongside her at the clinic.
Toby’s Take
C
ats suffer from anxiety, too. We express it a little differently, mostly by hiding and being tense. If your cat is territorial insecure (hiding Toby the and urine marking clinic kitty around the house), you can help by adding more litter boxes, making sure there’s multiple ways to exit a room, keeping a routine, and plenty of positive interactions. Dr. Rahal already mentioned CBD oil and Composure Pro, but Royal Canin has a calm food that I think tastes delicious—it contains tryptophan. Feliway (by Adaptil) comes in a spray, a wipe, and a diffuser. Of course there’s other medications you can talk to your vet about, too.

Weekly Farmers Market and Food Truck Nights BY VALLEY VIBE STAFF WRITERS info@valleyvibenews.com
T
he Market on 41st on the west side of Anthem opened during the pandemic as a storefront selling locally made food items and goods from small business owners. Anthem residents Sharon Smith and Manny Gonzales wanted to create a place during the shutdown where local
businesses could continue to sell their products everyday. “Farmers Markets weren’t being held and grocery stores were considered essential, so we looked for a loophole to help our local small businesses,” Smith said. The lively spot now hosts weekly farmers markets on Sunday mornings with local vendors and food trucks. And on Friday evenings the community has a new place to hang as the
Market has started offering food truck nights with adult yard games, bouncies and water slides for the kids for a small fee.

New Charter Management and Leadership at Caurus Academy BY KAREN GOVEIA editor@valleyvibenews.com
W
ith the announcement of Caurus Academy’s Executive Director Dameon Blair’s resignation in February, effective July 1, the charter school’s management is now led by Edkey, Inc., which oversees 16 additional schools in the Valley and a distance learning academy. The transition began shortly after Blair’s announcement and Caurus Academy’s Governing Board approached Edkey to take over. “Caurus’ Governing and Corporate Boards and Edkey have worked closely to ensure a seamless transition,” said Edkey
Assistant Superintendent Jerry Lewis, adding, “If no one knew there’d been a change in charter management, they’d probably not see a difference at all.” As for changes in leadership at the high school and elementary school, Caurus’ new elementary principal is Sunday Coronado, current principal of Edkey’s Sequoia Pathfinder Academy. Caurus High School Principal Wendy Davison will be moving up in Edkey’s leadership as its professional development and learning coordinator. Davison will be replaced by Michael Weakley, who most recently has been part of ASU Preparatory Academy Polytechnic High School’s leadership team.

2 Area Charter Schools Plan for New Campuses BY KAREN GOVEIA editor@valleyvibenews.com
Anthem Prep to Build New K–12 Campus Following a decade of serving its K–12 students in leased spaces—initially on the west side of Anthem in the space currently occupied by Ridgeline High School, to the east side of Anthem in the Cross of Christ Church building—Anthem Preparatory Academy plans to build a campus of its own by the start of the 2022–2023 school year.
and in addition to classroom space, includes a gym, football/ soccer field, lab rooms, special education rooms and library.
Ridgeline Seeks Land for Permanent High School Still in search of land to build a permanent middle and high school campus, Ridgeline Academy’s board of directors says efforts have been challenged by “robust growth that has doubled the price of land,” and “doubled projected construction estimates,” in a recent letter to parents.
The site of the new school is located on 10 acres at the northeast corner of Gavilan Peak Parkway and Arroyo Norte Drive, approximately 2 miles north of its current location.
The charter school began offering grades 9–12 last fall at its temporary campus along 41st Drive in Anthem and moved grades 7 and 8 there, but now that space is at capacity.
The new 82,000-square-foot building will be two stories
“Our dream is to work out a deal to purchase 15 acres of land
nearby,” said School Director Keven Barker, referencing land owned by W.L. Gore & Associates just west of Fry’s Marketplace along Dove Valley. Barker also added that the school is working with several area landowners for suitable options and remains committed to making fiscally responsible decisions for its permanent campus.
“We’d like to get building now,” Barker told Valley Vibe, adding, “If we don’t have land secured by November, we’re going to be in a hard spot for next year,” he said. In addition to core classes, the high school offers honors and dual enrollment courses, foreign language, fine and performing arts, technology, forensics, social sciences and more. Sports offerings include football, volleyball, basketball, cross country, soccer, baseball, softball and track and field.

DVUSD Launches New K-12 Online Academy BY KAREN GOVEIA editor@valleyvibenews.com
D
etermining the continued need for an online learning option, Deer Valley Unified School district is launching a new K–12 online academy, beginning with the 2021-22 school year. The curriculum offered through Aspire will be taught by certified teachers under the leadership of Juliet Amara, who brings 18 years of combined experience in teaching and administration roles to her new position as DVUSD’s director for online and virtual learning. Students in K-6 will participate in virtual real-time, Juliet Amara teacher-led instruction, grades 7–8 will learn through a hybrid of both teacher-led instruction and prepared resources, and grades 9–12 will learn through prepared resources, with open lab access to teachers with both virtual and in-person office hours. Full-time Aspire students can still participate in extracurricular activities at their designated DVUSD school. In addition to its traditional course offerings, the academy will offer music, art, physical education and technology at the elementary level and a variety of electives/exploratory classes at the middle school. High school students can enroll in advanced placement courses, and future plans include dual enrollment, career and technical education internships, clubs and eSports. Enrollment is underway and is open to all students in Arizona and there is no fee to enroll in the full-time program. In-person DVUSD high school students can sign up for a part-time option for a fee. “We believe providing this choice for parents who want an online option will keep students enrolled in DVUSD,” said Deputy Supt. Dr. Gayle Galligan. To date, DVUSD anticipates an enrollment of 750 K–12 students in the Aspire Academy, and while all grade levels still have availability, at the time of this writing, grades 2, 5 and 6 were close to capacity.
To register, families must complete the open enrollment process at www.openenrollment. dvusd.org/application.

NVCA Expands Online High School Program North Valley Christian Academy’s high school virtual program has been in place with a full online curriculum for grades 9 and 10, and this year the private school is expanding its coursework offerings in grades 11 and 12. The curriculum allows flexible learning options from single courses to a hybrid of online and in-person learning, as well as full-time virtual school. “This has offered students and their families flexibility in the workforce while getting a head start on training for a career or passion of theirs as well,” said Tim Gast, NVCA’s community director.
