The project is part of the city’s accelerated pavement maintenance program which includes repaving more than 250 major-street miles along some of the city’s most deteriorated roads. Signage alerting motorists to roadwork dates prior to the start of the work will be present.

Lane restrictions are expected during paving. To track and measure progress on the project and find out about plans for other area street improvements planned through 2023, visit the city’s performance dashboard at www.phoenix.gov/pavement.

Approximately 3 miles of pavement resurfacing between I-17 and 7th Avenue, is scheduled to take place in April barring any unforeseen circumstances or weather delays, said Phoenix Transportation Department spokesperson Ashley Patton. The top layer of asphalt will be removed from the roadway to accommodate a whole new layer, necessary when an asphalt surface has reached the end of its service life.

Construction Still Frozen on Hockey Rink Arena owner needs funding to resume work BY KAREN GOVEIA editor@valleyvibenews.com

W

hile plans for commercial projects in the North Valley continue making forward progress, the half-completed Legacy Sports Arena and adjacent hotel needs financial help to meet its finish line. It’s been a year since construction on the 171,000-square-foot hockey and multi-sports arena north of Sonoran Desert Drive between I-17 and North Valley Parkway came to a complete stoppage. The project was already 10 months into construction and more than half complete when Legacy owner Rob Eaton said the sports and leisure industry became severely impacted by government-imposed lockdowns, and ultimately continued funding for the project became difficult to secure. “With COVID-19 [uncertainties], they just

1 2 | APRIL 2021

didn’t want to lend in the sports environment,” Eaton told Valley Vibe. “Every time I thought it’d be next month, it’s been another month, so here we are a year later,” he said. With essentially no fast return to normalcy and the sports and recreation industry still limited in its offerings, construction remains at a standstill. Eaton, who has millions already invested in the project, says he has secured a construction loan commitment, but an additional $3 million investment is required to resume construction. To do so, he is looking for an investor to step in and help get construction crews rolling again. He estimates roughly eight months of work remain on completion time for the arena. “I’m not shocked, but I’m dismayed at how long it’s taking to get this done,” Eaton said, adding “A lot of people are going to be heartbroken if it [the arena] doesn’t happen.” The project has been in the works since it was approved by the City of Phoenix in 2018. When complete, the 2,000-seat arena would support several sports with their needs for additional ice and indoor floor space, including hockey, basketball, volleyball, pickleball, lacrosse, and soccer, among others. Construction on the adjacent 88-room hotel also remains at a halt, but Eaton said that part of the project is secondary to completion of the arena. Potential investors and lenders can reach Eaton at 480-698-0144.

PET TALK |

3 Ways to Keep Your Pets Safe From Rattlesnakes BY CHERYL RAHAL, D.V.M. (With sidenotes from Toby the clinic kitty)

S

nake season—is there such a thing?

March and April usher in the kind of weather that makes the Valley the envy of the rest. Our beautiful warm days and clear skies means more time for longer walks and hikes with our pets, and it’s a safer time to leave your big dogs outside during the day. However, it’s also the time of year that rattlesnakes emerge from hibernation after the colder winter months, and when they emerge they are quite “hangry” searching for their next meal and traveling to establish their territory. The majority of the snake bite victims we see at The Pet Wellness Center are in these spring months. How can you protect your pet from being bit by a rattlesnake? It’s difficult—many times even when we put our best efforts forward—it still happens. Here are three tips to help keep your pets safe from snake encounters.

1 Snake-proof your yard. Keep your bushes trimmed and your yard free of debris. Consult your gardener or landscaper for more ways to prevent snakes from getting into your yard. 2 Snake train your pet. We recommend

“snake training” by a professional trainer. This is done by exposing your dog to live snakes (usually in a wire cage). These snakes provide the sensory input (smell, sound and sight) that dogs need to recognize them as the trainer teaches it as dangerous. The training also involves teaching what to do during a snake encounter—run away! An electric shock collar is used to simulate the pain of snake bite.

3 Vaccinate your pet. Many veterinarians recommend the “snake vaccine” as an additional protection method for your dog or horse (it’s not yet labeled for cats). By vaccinating your pet we are creating on-board antivenin. Should your pet be bit by a rattlesnake, they still need to be treated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Studies have shown that the snake vaccine creates a window of time (4-5 hours if properly vaccinated) to get home or off the trail to bring your pet to a hospital.

FACT OR FICTION? Cats are immune to rattlesnake venom. Here’s what Toby the clinic kitty has to say…

C

ats being the superior species have lightning-fast reflexes, and sixth sense to know that rattlesnakes are deadly, so we just don’t bother with them. Although I have seen some poor fellow felines come to my clinic’s hospital suffering from snake bites. Toby the Surely cats are not immune, clinic kitty the wounds are much worse and I’m told it’s because of our small body size. That’s why I stay indoors. It’s safer, and the food is better. Dr. Cheryl Rahal is a doctor of veterinary medicine at The Pet Wellness Center in North Phoenix. Her sidekick, Toby, spends his days alongside her at the clinic.
