A Note from our Head of School Dear Friends, THANK YOU!
On behalf of the entire Valley Christian community, thank you for your faithful support of our mission to equip students to be culture changers for Christ—today and tomorrow. With the grace of God, and with your steadfast generosity, we are guiding our students to know, love, and live like Jesus Christ, preparing them academically, spiritually, physically, and socially to make a positive difference in their communities. This past year has been nothing short of extraordinary. Our country—indeed, our world—has gone through a tumultuous and challenging time. Yet, at Valley Christian Schools, we are moving forward with bold and unabashed faith, trusting that God will bless our efforts to educate the leaders of tomorrow with the timeless truths of Scripture. We are deeply appreciative of your support for our school and for our mission. To each and every one of you, we extend our most sincere gratitude. Before looking back on the ways you have impacted VCS in 2020-21, I want to take this opportunity to invite you to our 40th Anniversary Celebration, to be held at our high school campus on the evening of Friday, April 1, 2022.
JOIN US FOR A NIGHT OF CELEBRATION, COMMUNITY, AND FUN! For 40 years we have served our students with the foundational trust and support of our community. We could not provide world-class curriculum, programs, or facilities to our students without your generous support. For this reason, we want to spend an evening gathered together, celebrating four decades of Christian education in the East Valley with the hopes for many more to come. We would be honored if you would join us for a night of celebration, gratitude, and fun with our entire community—students, parents, teachers, coaches, faculty, alumni, and friends. As you review a year’s worth of your impact, please consider joining us in reviewing 40 years of impact this April. Thank you, and I hope to see you there. Yours in Christ,
Dan Kuiper, Head of School 2

GIFT STEWARDSHIP
Two-Story Academic Classroom This 11-classroom building allows us to grow our capacity from 440 students at the high school to more than 650. We moved into the first floor of this building – the Nelson STEM Floor, named after longtime VCS staff member, Al Nelson – in August of 2020. The second floor is currently being constructed thanks to generous gifts toward Secure the Future, and will hold classes beginning in August of 2022.
Trojan Sports Performance Center One of the finest spaces for high school student-athlete development in AZ, we were thrilled to expand and re-imagine our original weight room into the Trojan Sports Performance Center, dedicated to Jimmy Cottrell. The space – which includes numerous TVs, displaying everything from workout regimens to highlights – hosts daily weight training classes, sport-specific workouts, and even acts as an occasional meeting space.
Parking, Stoplight, & Legacy Walkway As we expand our high school capacity to 650 students, we are also adding much-needed parking and safety to our campus. The Galveston intersection will now include a long-awaited stoplight, northbound deceleration lane, and a 73-space parking lot just north of the softball field. Generous donors will see their bricks lining Legacy Walkway, connecting the high school campus to the future elementary and junior high campuses. 6

Elementary Expansion In 2019, we opened the elementary campus with just a few months’ notice and 146 students. One year later, we were educating 239 students, and in 21-22, we are now educating 340 on the same campus. With your help, we were able to make numerous investments into the campus, including making every classroom usable, new desks and chairs, additional technology throughout the campus, and much more.
STEM & Innovative Learning Project At the 2020 Legacy Auction, we asked our community to help us fund 8 different STEM & Innovative Learning needs. Because of your help, we were able to purchase iPad carts and updated classroom computers at the elementary campus, STEM/Robotics/ science equipment at the junior high campus, and programming and coding computers, CAD software computers, and 3D printers at the high school campus.
Shade Structure at Elementary Yes, our elementary students love learning, but they also love being active during recess, lunch, and before and after school. Our playground, grass area, and blacktop are great places for students to play, but are largely unshaded. This past summer, we were thrilled to be able to add additional shade over the west basketball court, allowing even more students to play outside when the weather is less than ideal.

GOD’S FAITHFULNESS THROUGH CHALLENGES
Even in the face of global crisis, we have seen clearly that God has blessed Valley Christian’s commitment to Christian education.
There are plenty of challenges that come with running a school system, but among the greatest challenges Valley Christian faced the past two years was COVID-19 and the nationwide impacts that followed. We wanted to take a moment to recognize the teachers, parents, and other friends that helped us navigate such an unforeseen and novel challenge. Thanks to you, we were able to continue educating our students safely, responsibly, and boldly, actually increasing our enrollment by 29% during a time when other schools faced enrollment challenges. We remain confident and continue to be faithful, asking that God will continue blessing our efforts to equip students to be culture changers for Christ, both today and tomorrow.

ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIPS
AL NELSON ENDOWMENT SCHOLARSHIP
Shortly before beloved and longtime teacher and coach, Al Nelson, passed, he told those who were helping with his care that he wished he had money to donate for a math scholarship. Around the time of his death, close friends discovered that Mr. Nelson did, in fact, have money to leave to VCS. In July 2018, VCS established the Al Nelson Endowment Scholarship fund in his honor. This scholarship fund assists an ongoing VCS senior pursuing a math or STEM career, fields near and dear to Mr. Nelson’s heart.
BELINDA MILLER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Belinda Miller Memorial Scholarship testifies to the legacy and generosity of VCS grandparent, Belinda Miller. Belinda and her husband, Tim, shared a firm belief in Christ as their Savior and the value of Christian education. After Belinda’s passing, Tim asked for the opportunity to begin an annual scholarship in Belinda’s name to bless a family who may otherwise not be able to attend VCS.
In addition to the primary VCS Endowment Fund, a number of donors have partnered with VCS to establish and award annual scholarships for current or graduating VCS students. 12

JUSTIN KYLE LETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
THE BAILEY VOSS (DYKSTRA) SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship testifies to the legacy and spirit of VCHS alumnus, Justin Lett, Class of 2007. The Lett family and the VCS community lost Justin suddenly in 2018 at the young age of 28. The Lett family worked with VCS to honor Justin and his love for God, people, and the gift that is life. Justin truly lived with passion for every moment, and dreamt up, penned, and consistently lived out every day the phrase “Dream then Do, in the Name of the Lord.”
Steven and Wendy Voss have served the Valley Christian community for more than two decades, through regular gifts of time, talent, and treasure. Through the date of the Fund’s establishment, Steven had served for a total of nine years on the VCS Board of Directors across two terms, and once served in an interim role in the VCS Business Office in a time of significant need. Wendy has volunteered and served on numerous committees over the years in support of VCS. Steven and Wendy’s two children – Taylor (’04) and Bailey (’07) – are proud Valley Christian alumni.
VCS awards more than $1,000,000 annually in internal scholarships and discounts to our Legacy families, multi-student families, local pastors, and more.

CELEBR ATING OUR PAST
Four decades ago, a faithful group of culture-changers for Christ embarked on something new, exciting, and challenging. Their vision was to provide a world-class and truly Christian education to the families of the East Valley. Today, we celebrate their courage, God’s providence, and your steadfast support for Valley Christian Schools as we boldly fulfill our vision to equip students to be culture changers for Christ— today and tomorrow. We think it’s important to pause and remember where we started, how far we’ve come, and where we are now. So, please join us as we take a moment to look back and celebrate 40 years of Valley Christian history.

VCHS OPENS WITH 40 STUDENTS, MEETING AT BETHANY COMMUNITY CHURCH.
VCHS MOVES TO A TEMPE OFFICE COMPLEX.
Valley Christian High School opened its doors with a modest 20 students between the freshman and sophomore grades on the Bethany Campus off of Price and Guadalupe Roads in Tempe. The original plan was to grow by a grade level each year, but in year two, there were 40 students but no juniors. The grade levels continued to slowly grow and expand from that point until Valley Christian had its first graduating class in 1986. Interscholastic athletics first started at the Bethany Campus, but teams had to travel across the Valley for practices and games as the school had no on-campus athletic facilities.
After outgrowing that site, VCHS moved into a strip mall at Broadway and Price Roads in Tempe. The mall was revamped to accommodate the high school. During that time, land in Chandler on 56th Street between Ray and Chandler was procured through the assistance of El Dorado Holdings. During the school’s stay at the Price campus, VCHS launched a capital campaign to raise funds for the current campus.

VCHS MOVES TO OUR PERMANENT CAMPUS IN CHANDLER.
VCS EXPANDS TO GRADES 6-12 IN 2018, THEN TO GRADES K-12 IN 2019.
In the fall of 1997, Valley Christian moved to its current high school location. Since the move, a number of capital construction projects have occurred to improve and increase facilities on the campus. The capital construction projects have consisted of an addition to the gym, football field and track, a north classroom building, an addition to the main academic building, softball field, and remodeling of some of the main academic building.
In 2018, after significant prayer and discussion amongst our Board and leadership, and after our first 36 years serving grades 9-12, VCS made the decision to expand to grades 6-12 for the 2018-19 school year. The following year, after even more prayer and discussion, VCS expanded to serving grades K-12 across three different campuses: elementary (Tempe), junior high (Tempe), and high school (Chandler). The long-term plan of the school is to educate all grade levels on our 33-acre permanent campus in Chandler.

You may know her as “Kyle from Johnjay and Rich” or “Kyle from Your Life A to Z,” but we know her as Kyle Unfug, Class of 2000. Kyle lives in Phoenix with her husband and daughter, and spends her days entertaining the East Valley at KissFM and Channel 3. An ASU graduate, Kyle is grateful for the ability to meet so many interesting people in the entertainment industry. Kyle is also the daughter of longtime VCHS art teacher, Susie Lynch, and she is one of many Legacy families, as her own daughter now attends VCS.

Many members of our community attended our Champions Breakfast in April 2021, where we heard from senior, Emma Richardson. Emma’s testimony of God’s work in her life through her time at VCS was very powerful. Since graduating the next month, Emma has moved across the country to further her academic and athletic career at Shorter University in Rome, Georgia. There, she is studying Special Education and competing in volleyball at the NCAA Division 2 level. This season, Shorter University earned a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament, something which hadn’t been done in over four years. For Emma, what made her team so successful was their focus on pursuing God and keeping Him at the center of the team. When it comes to school, Emma is eager to start working towards getting into the classroom and preparing to become the best teacher she can be. 20

One of Kylie’s favorite memories at Valley Christian was winning the state championship with her team after earning state runner-up for the past two years. Another favorite memory was having a blast at senior kick-off and growing closer with the amazing Class of 2022. After spending her freshman and sophomore years elsewhere, Kylie transferred to Valley Christian and quickly became both a heavily involved and beloved member of the VCS community. Kylie is an accomplished volleyball player, having made both the All-Conference and All-Region first teams her senior year. She was an integral member of the 2020-21 high school volleyball team which won the state championship. Committed to play volleyball next year at West Point Academy, Kylie will go on to serve her country in the U.S. Army after college. Her hope is to push herself, both mentally and physically, to become an outstanding leader and culture changer for Christ.

Some of Logan’s most memorable experiences at Valley Christian were the Spiritual Emphasis Conferences and the Chorale Tour of 2020. Involved in both the Fine Arts and Athletic programs, Logan cherishes the time he spent at VCS, serving Jesus with his numerous talents. Logan is an active member of both Valley Worship and the Chorale and has performed many solos throughout his time at Valley. He is a talented athlete as well, helping Valley Christian to two state championships in track and field. Ranked 1st in the state and 2nd in the nation for pole-vaulting, Logan currently holds the school record at 17’1”! After graduating, Logan plans to pole-vault at The University of Mississippi and is currently training for the 2024 Olympic Trials.

SECURING OUR FUTURE
Phase 1 Two-story high school building In order to accommodate more students and families, and in order to meet the expanding need for interactive and innovative classrooms, we are nearing completion of a state-of-the-art, two-story academic building on the high school campus. This 11-classroom building allows us to serve approximately 650 students at the high school (up from 440), and has enabled us to expand our course offerings, most notably additional STEM courses.
Parking lot and intersection As we expand our high school capacity, we are also adding much-needed parking and safety to our campus. The Galveston intersection will now include a long-awaited stoplight, northbound deceleration lane, and a 73-space parking lot just north of the softball field. Generous donors will see their bricks lining Legacy Walkway, connecting the high school campus to the future elementary and junior high campuses.

Future Phases Performing Arts Center VCS boasts an incredible legacy of high-quality worship and performing arts. In fact, the VCS founders said, “Since God created music, Christians should be musically literate.” Since its inception, VCS has continually required at least one credit in music for every graduating student. A dedicated worship and performing arts space on the high school campus has been a dream for the school since its founding, and a plan for the school since the early 2000s. In 2022, we are beginning to look forward to the realization of this dedicated space on our campus, as we work to equip even more students to be well-rounded culture changers for Christ.
Permanent Junior High Campus While we are so grateful to Gethsemane Church for their unparalleled hospitality for our junior high grades, we also look forward to the day when all VCS students are meeting on our permanent campus in Chandler. Future phases of the Secure the Future Campaign will include the relocation of grades K-8 to our 33-acre permanent campus in Chandler, including classrooms, a second and larger gymnasium, a full football/soccer field, and more.
Permanent Elementary Campus VCS will forever be thankful for the long legacy of Christian education left by Bethany Christian School, which sold their property to VCS with built-in equity in order to keep Christian education on their campus. This property has served as a wonderful home to our elementary grades, as we now educate more students than ever before in the light of God’s Word on this campus. As with our junior high grades, we look forward to the day when all VCS students are meeting on our permanent campus in Chandler.

Development Office: What you have just read was not a report on our activities, our needs, our vision for the future, or even our successes. It was a report on YOUR impact. Yes, your support goes toward helping us enhance our current activities, addressing needs, and building our vision for the future of Valley Christian. And of course we want to show how you have helped VCS succeed this past year. But impact is far more than all of that. To impact means to change, and to change means to make different. The greatest impact you have had on Valley Christian Schools—that is, your greatest difference—has been your equipping of our students to be culture changers for Christ. VCS graduates are all over the world, making a difference in their communities, and loving and pursuing Jesus. This thrills us –and we hope it thrills you, too. Truly, we can’t do what we do without you. Thank you! With Gratitude,
