If you succeed there are many rewards; if you disgrace yourself you can always write a book.” ● If you’re like 75 percent of Americans, you like to doodle. ● There was a shipwreck in 1664 that had only one survivor, one in 1785 that also resulted in all but one aboard being killed, and one in 1860 that likewise left a single person alive. Considering the fact that shipwrecks are not that uncommon -particularly in the heyday of ocean travel -- you might not think this much of a coincidence. Think again, though; in each of those shipwrecks, the sole survivor was named Hugh Williams. ● Those who study such things say that Roman Emperor Caligula’s last words were, “I’m still alive!” ● If you go bankrupt, your creditors are forbidden from seizing your wedding ring to pay debts. ● In 1984, a woman named Deborah Martorano was shopping at Bloomingdale’s in New York City, when one of the store’s employees, a perfume demonstrator, sprayed her with scent. • There was no cure for polio at that time, and the treatments available had little effect. Roosevelt worked hard, exercising and swimming in Franklin Delano Roosevelt warm water daily. He regained much of his upper body strength but his legs never recovered. From that point on, he was forced to use leg braces, crutches and a wheelchair for mobility.

• In 1927, he founded the Georgia Warm Springs Foundation for Rehabilitation, a center for the treatment of polio and other afflictions, which is still in operation today.

THE BARE TRUTH ABOUT THE

TEDDY BEAR Presidents are often remembered for their historic decisions in leadership, be they good decisions or bad, but only one president is remembered for inspiring a toy whose popularity has endured worldwide for many generations. Tidbits thought it would be interesting to look into the origin of that popular toy -- the teddy bear. • Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt served as President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. A political cartoon by artist Clifford Berryman that appeared in The Washington Post on November 16, 1902 with Roosevelt as the subject, marks the beginning of the teddy bear story. • Berryman’s cartoon depicted an incident that happened weeks earlier when the president, an avid outdoorsman and hunter, had been invited on a bear-hunting trip by Mississippi governor Andrew H. Longino. The hunt proved disappointing for Roosevelt, who was the only one in the party who hadn’t bagged a bear. Wanting to please the president with at least one kill to his credit, guides captured a bear and tied him to a tree for the president to shoot. But Roosevelt’s sense of fair sportsmanship would not allow him to shoot the helpless animal, and he refused to do so. • Ad News of the incident spread quickly and the Proof: story was picked up nationally M & B Consignment Centerby newspapers inluding The Washington Post, who published 1/8 pg., 4c, 13x discount rate Berryman’s cartoon.

with a sign that read, “Teddy’s Bear.” The bear sold quickly, and they were soon inundated with requests for similar stuffed bears. • Mitchom wrote a letter asking president Roosevelt for permission to name his popular bear “Teddy.” The president sent Mitchom a hand-written reply stating, “I don’t think my name is likely to be worth much in the toy bear business, but you are welcome to use it.” • The Mitchoms’ bears were so successful that they started the Ideal Novelty and Toy Company, with their main success being teddy bears.

• Steiff and Michtom bears are valuable collectors’ toys today. The popularity of the original bears led many other manufacturers into producing toy bears through the years, and the popularity of teddy bears has continued. • In fact, the teddy bear was so loved, President Roosevelt used the song “The Teddy Bears’ PROOF Picnic” inADVERTISING his re-election campaign in 1904.

Cartoon by Clifford Berryman depicting Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot a captured bear. The Washington Post, November 16, 1902.

• At about the same time that teddy bears were becoming the hot toy item in the United States, Margarete Steiff, a disabled German seamstress, started making stuffed toy bears at a toy factory in Geingen, Germany. The Steiff bears were based on drawings from Margarete’s nephew, Richard. Richard was an art student and sketched bear cubs that were at the Stuttgart Zoo. • The Michtoms’ bear resembled the Berryman cartoon bear, while the Steiff bear looked more like a real bear cub with a humped back and long snout. • An American toy buyer ordered 3,000 Steiff bears in 1903, realizing that the teddy bear popularity in the United States was growing fast. Millions of Steiff bears were sold between 1903 and World War I. In 1905, a trademark button in the left ear was added to Steiff bears.

When Kids Won’t Leave the Nest In Italy, they’re know as “mammon” (mamas’ boys). The Japanese call them “parasaito shinguru” (parasite singles). In the U.S., they’re ® referred to as “boomerangs.” And in Britain, they go by “KIPPERS,” an acronym for “kids in parents’ by Mary Hunt pockets eroding retirement savings.” As humorous as this may sound at first, kids moving back home after college or after losing their job is a growing problem for many families in many countries. Growing up and facing life independently is getting increasingly more expensive. Add to this, most young adults believe that to find a rewarding career they must first opt for college after high school. Four years later when they finally have their degree, they now have school loans far greater than they can handle even at low interest rates. Add on the cost of a car, food, clothing, shelter and some kind of social life, and suddenly moving back in with Mom and Dad (Translation: someone else to pay the bills) becomes a financially attractive option. So, what’s a parent to do? Here are a few suggestions:

Everyday CHEAPSKATE

Create a contract. Call it a “Temporary Residency Agreement,” wherein you as the parents are the “Landlord” and your adult child is the “Tenant.” Err on the side of not cutting your young adult any slack here. This is an excellent opporTues., Apr. 5 tunity to teach personal responsibility and the fine art of living on a budget. Have a beginning and an end date. Address everything in this agreement and close all loopholes. If you treat this in a business-like way, you’ll get a lot more respect in the days (weeks, months?) ahead. UNIQUE Set rules. This is about money, so don’t COINS skirt around the issue. Whether your kids are still 1/12th pg. 4C (26x Disc. Rate) with you because they moved back or because April 10, 2011 Vol. 7 - No. 15

Beyond money. Everyone living in the home needs to participate in its maintenance. What are your minimum standards for laundry and meals? Who gets to park where? What about guests? Don’t assume anything. Put everything in writing. Exit strategy. There needs to be a clear cut plan for how long this arrangement will last (do not skip the ending date on that contract) and a plan for its conclusion. Then make sure everyone is sticking to that schedule. This is not about how much you love your kids or your ability to support them forever. It’s about loving them enough to force them to grow wings and learn to fly on their own, regardless the state of the economy, the load of debt they’ve amassed or their inability to find the job of their dreams. You may have to push them from the nest, but if you play your cards right, it won’t come to that. Hopefully, through your loving persistence, they will gain the strength and stamina to fly off on their own.

Cats, Dogs and Other People By Matthew Margolis

Decoding Canine Behaviors “We have a 7-month-old baby who is learning to crawl. When she starts moving, our 10-yearold Ridgeback/Pit bull mix gets anxious and starts circling her. Every once in a while when she is moving, he will charge at her and nudge her with his nose. Sometimes he will growl when he does that. Mind you, we do not let her crawl around without us there, and we push him away when we see him charging at her. “He was OK with her until she started crawling. He follows us with her everywhere. Even when she is sleeping in her crib, he has to be in the room with her. He won’t leave her side. We feel that he is protecting her. When she is crawling, it is a different story. “‘Barnie’ has had a tough life. We rescued him at 2 years old, and we were told at the shelter that he was beaten as a puppy. “As for the baby, it seems like he is protecting her until she gets on the ground. Should we be worried about him charging her? What does that mean? Is he scared or threatened by her? Any suggestions would be appreciated.” If you were on a boat in the middle of the ocean and production you noticed a shark circling your boat, would you HRS: jump the water? No. Would you feel 1 in MIN: 45 scared or threatened? stamp You bet. An AdVenture animal circling something is in predator Media mode, and whatever he is circling is potential prey. It is no different when the parties involved are a dog and a baby. Charging can be an aggressive action. Growling is a clear and certain warning of escalating aggression. This couple has a tough decision to make. Their choices are: -- Find a new home for the dog. -- Find a new home for the baby. -- Find a way to keep the two away from each other 100 percent of the time. They were hoping to train the dog and eliminate the behaviors through training. But timing is everything. Baby is already crawling, and Barnie is ten CASEY’S CORNER: Turn to page 10 Tidbits® of Coachella Valley

SOCIAL SECURITY by Tom Margeneau

Not Your Grandfather’s Social Security Office Q:

I would like you to comment on the attached email. In it, you’ll see a photo that shows a waiting room in a typical Social Security office. I’ve seen similar scenes in my own local office. No wonder Social Security is in trouble if these kinds of people are ripping off the system!

A:

Who are “these kinds of people”? To answer the question, let me describe the photo for the rest of my readers. Labeled “Our tax dollars at work: Social Security office waiting room -- Austin, Texas,” the image shows a room full of chairs. Sitting in those chairs is a collection of mostly young to middle-aged people. Almost everyone in the picture is African-American or Hispanic. Above the picture is this question: “Do you see any gray or white haired retired folks?” And this bit of vitriolic text accompanies the picture: My friend went to his Social Security office to get a Medicare card. He took a picture of the waiting room. Please tell me if you can find a retired person in the place!!!! It’s called “disability” insurance!!!! You no longer have to wonder why Social Security is broke!!! These people do not pay into the system, nor are they disabled!!! Please spread this picture to everyone you know. Our country is going broke on this fraud!!! Please also go down to your Social Security office and take a picture and post it on the Internet. It just might wake up the country as to what is going on!!! Gosh. Where and how do I begin to deal with this pile of Internet excrement? There’s so much I could point out that is absolutely idiotic. Let’s start with one obvious point: I hope you realize how racist and xenophobic it is. The uninformed fool who posted this picture and text on the Ad Proof: web never came out and said it, but instead of wonGet where Fit Training Systemspeople were, he might dering the gray-haired page, 4/Color, as 1/16th well have asked, “Do you26x seediscount any whiterate folks?” AprilAnd about this whopper: “These people 17 -how Sept. 4, 2011 (Vol. 7: #16 - #37) do not pay into the system, nor are they disabled!” How in the world can you tell all of that from lookCorrections due: Wed., 4/12/11, 6 pm ing at the picture? How can you tell that they haven’t worked and paid Social Security taxes? I guess it’s Some things are just because they are “those people” -- black and Hispanic. What other reason would the sender have too good to email change... for saying that? • And Samehow Beautiful know anddisabled? love do weMusic knowyou they aren’t What do disabled people look like? Do they have to • Same pleasing format

We mail our charitable gifts in December because that’s when we know how much we are able to give. However, we are frustrated by charities who continually bombard us with what we believe to be excessive solicitation with their frequent mailings, emails and commission-based, outsourced phone callers. Also, rather than their free mailing labels or other items, we would prefer they give their recipi-

Game Table Set Still a Winner Q:

What can you tell me about the game table and chairs seen in this photo? I inherited the set in August of 1961. Bourbon Barrel Furniture made it from real bourbon barrels. The oak tabletop reverses to a gaming table, and there is storage in the base. The chairs swivel, too. Do you have any idea of the value of my set?

Dinky diecast toy cars were made in Britain as early as 1933. Collectors are most interested in those made in the 1950s and 1960s. Dinky’s Austin Healey Sprite car can be seen selling in the range of $125 to $150. Address your questions to Anne McCollam, P. O. Box 247, Notre Dame, IN 46556. Whiskey and other spirits are aged in oak wood barrels or casks. Cast-off barrels inspired designers to re-purpose them into furniture and garden planters. Whiskey barrel furniture was popular in the 1970s along with shag carpet, polyester suits, extra wide belts, bell-bottom pants on steroids, platform shoes and men’s blazers in shades of acid green. Astonishingly, these kitschy game sets are still popular and sell anywhere from $400 to $1000.

Whiskey barrel furniture such as this set was popular in the 1970s.

Phillip Rosenthal in Selb, Germany, founded Rosenthal Porcelain Factory in 1879. They produce an extremely high quality of porcelain and glassware. Their Studio Line is inspired by innovative international designs and is still in production. Finnish artist, sculptor and industrial designer, Tapio Wirkkala, created some of the most sophisticated porcelain and glassware designs for Rosenthal. Many of his designs were inspired by the simplicity of the mystical winter landscapes in his native Finland. He designed a myriad of diverse objects that included knives, Finlandia Vodka bottles, dinnerware, glassware and jewelry. Polaris is the name of the shape and Eisblume, which means “Frost Flower,” is the pattern. Your casserole dish was made around 1970 and would probably be worth $50 to $75.
