LOOK CLOSER. YOU WILL SEE THROUGH ME. “The world around me is my theater and I always observe the play with lots of focus and alertness. I’m very much fond of details, I see what everyday people don’t and I’m fascinated by small everyday events that influence our life. After I observe them I process everything and let myself be inspired and just let go. I take my camera and capture what I see, feel and dream. I create works that come from my heart and I try to speak to people through them. I always want to help those who are innocent, powerless or manipulated and let them know they’re not alone. Art is a strong media that can change the world so I use it with care and respect. When you look at my works, you can always see part of me and my hidden thoughts. They’re coming out in subtle ways that only a keen observer can notice. Look closer and you will see through me: there’s a new world.”

The work of visual artist Valerie Wolf Gang (1990) focuses on video and contemporary artistic practices. Her work reflects social conflicts arising from political regulations and constraints, especially when traveling or working abroad. When moving in space and time she animates the dead surroundings with her camera as suggested in the writings about speed by the contemporary philosopher Paul Virilo. Her works underscores the contrasts between nature and city, happiness and sadness, authority and freedom. She graduated from Ljubljana School of Design and Photography, then obtained a bachelor’s degree from School of Arts at the University of Nova Gorica in Digital art and Practice with focus on video film and continued her studies with MA thesis in Media Art and Practice master program, specialization in video and contemporary art. She improved her theoretical and practical knowledge at the FAMU film academy in Prague and art academy ESAD in Portugal. She regularly works with different media and creates multimedia installations to be presented in various galleries. Her videos and short films have been featured, nominated and awarded at various festivals and cinema theaters. She works as a freelance video artist, a status granted by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia. She is actively involved in different forms of artistic production, video and film projects, international exhibition selections and artistic residencies.

She regularly documents and publishes her feelings (including the online platform artist-abroad.com), and at the same time she is creating a collection of video poetry, which will serve as evidence of intimate reflection on herself and her new environment. “New land new beginning” is a study which symbolically shows the artist’s rebirth in new surroundings, with a new identity and perspective on her own body of work.

The ship has a symbolic value in the poem and through the variety of short scenes showing different details we can observe different interpretations and connections between real life and the imaginary world of poetry.

Video material was shot in Paris. In videos we can see the Parisian life, people with different social backgrounds, random strangers, small apartments, views of city from above, city at night and city at day. In the gallery viewers suddenly become watchers and almost stalkers, who are looking through windows and observe what is happening on the other side. Artist tries to recreate the real feeling of windows and the everyday environment on the other side, but the irony is that visitors watch the wall and the digital reflection of the moving image which is only the document of time.

One of the meanings of the fence is certainly the invisible boundary which we create ourselves. In this way we create an artificial distance from a specific race, culture, country and the neighbors, and we place ourself in a position of a superior man - which is similar situation that we have towards animals. The fence also represents us being trapped in a system that we have created - like the artist also created this installation. Fence can also be our mind - we can look through the wire and se far or we can build it around us and hide.

“The Luxembourg monster” is a video installation which combines different artistic techniques (graffiti, video, sound). It is also an art piece which plays with the perception of the public: what is the actual monster in the installation? importance dates back to its founding as a Roman era fortress and Frankish count’s castle site in the Early Middle Ages. It was an important bastion along the Spanish Road when Spain was the principal European power influencing the whole western hemisphere and beyond in the 16th–17th centuries. Luxembourg is a member of the European Union, NATO, OECD, the United Nations, and Benelux, reflecting the political consensus in favor of economic, political, and military integration. The city of Luxembourg, the largest and capital city, is the seat of several institutions and agencies of the EU. Short interviews with the locals will reveal if the situation is as good as the statistics or if there is something the public should know. Monster is a metaphor for the real life problems and the aim of the video installation is to find that monster and present it to the public with a real visual appearance and sound.

The second part of the test was hard to measure since people didn’t spot anything, but we assume they probably would turn their back.

Besides the public test, the aim of the video installation was also to show the real problems which are facing the artists: ignorance by the public, ignorance by the state and hardly any solutions by the system in this times of recession. The artist in the video is Urša Bonelli Potokar, which is a young video artist and she’s facing a lot of these problems which are moving her focus from art and creativity to stress and worries. How to survive? How to pay the bills? Public demands and wants (video) artists to work for free or for a change, but they don’t realize that behind every art profession there is years of studying, experimenting, working and a lot of sacrificing. Often the personal life is set beside for the purpose of ones career because of the many late hours spent for work. But this details are often hidden from public, so of course they are not aware of the problems artist are facing. The video installation looks into the future and reminds the system one more time: “Watch out, because soon the art and culture will be put on the street.” And without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable.

While we enjoy drinking virtual coffee with the artist, we can notice that the day gets darker and at the end of the video we can see that the atmosphere changed: surroundings got darker, but the lights became brighter and so are our thoughts – deeper and more aware of ourselves. The transformation begins with the first sip of the coffee and as Elizabeth Barkley put out: “I will never forget experiencing Venice for the first time. It feels like you are transported to another time – the art, music, food and pure romance in the air is like no other place.”

our freedom. The question is where is the end, the boundary at the end of nature that says: “Passage through this point is not permitted” or „Unauthorized access forbidden“. The issue of freedom is explored through poetry to seek solutions: We can only be personal in our heads, in art and in free movement of the body. „Are we free? Let’s think again.” The considerably narrow and tight format of the video is all about restrictions as well. Natural atmospheric sounds of birds and an underground recording of an earthquake form part of the video, contrasting and complementing each other and achieving harmony between the world and the city. At the same time, however, warning signs are telling us that something is terribly wrong.

The whole room is dark and the smell of basement soon give us the feeling of a nightmare. Around the room you can spot different symbolic objects that influenced my life. You can also calculate your life span on the calculator or write me a real poem. Everyone that enters becomes part of the film, part of the nightmare. There’s no time, the clock is stopped, we’re trapped forever.
