The Buttermarket the 12th century. The boat-shaped Upper High Street, purported to be the widest in the country, is

a reminder of these days when livestock was driven in and corralled in the centre of town on market

day - the cattle market is just out of the centre now but still active several times a week. With a mention in the Domesday Book and beautiful, old architecture everywhere, it is a town that oozes history and yet is very much in step with modern life. While many small town high streets have struggled in the face of competition from out of town supermarkets and retail parks, Thame has maintained a good balance and boasts many excellent independent stores and a fabulous selection of cafés, pubs and restaurants, which make shopping in the town a delight.
