more on the ‘Christmas in Thame’ Facebook page. The light switch-on is just the start of festive events, with craft fairs, tribute nights, live music and performances, not to mention the side-splitting Panto from Thame Players! There is something on almost every day of advent. To make sure you don’t miss out search ‘Christmas in Thame’ on Facebook or #ChristmasInThame on Twitter, or keep checking www. thametowncouncil.gov.uk/christmas where details will also be available. Other points of interest visitors

to Thame might like to know about include a lovely Museum (www. thamemuseum.org) housed in the Old Court House on the Lower High Street, the spectacular 13th Century Church of St Mary’s which dominates the skyline and is open to the public most days, and hidden away, a short stroll from the church, is the Bandstand which came from the Wembley Exhibition of 1921. The Birdcage Inn, on the Cornmarket, was built in the 15th Century and once housed French prisoners from the Napolionic wars

while they were awaiting trial. Walking around the town you may notice Blue Plaques drawing attention to the places that historically significant people and events were associated with. These include: John Hampden; W. B. Yeats; John Fothergill who ran the Spread Eagle Hotel many years ago; bare-knuckle fighter James Figg; Henry Boddington (18131886) founder of Boddington’s Brewery, who was born in Thame and Alfredo Campoli (1906-1991) the respected violinist who retired to Thame in 1986.

You can follow a trail to view the Blue Plaques and other historical sites, as well as the more modern ‘Midsomer Murders Trail’. The TV mysteries were filmed in and around Thame and Midsomer guided walking tours are available in the Summer months. Leaflets are available from the Information Centre in Thame Town Hall with more information and suggested walks and trails around the town - you can also see them online under the ‘Visit Thame - Town Trails’ menu at: www. thametowncouncil.gov.uk
