FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS What is Innov8? Innov8 is a state of the art 3D business simulator for Business Process Management (BPM), a ‘serious game’, which takes participants through the entire lifecycle of discovery, collaboration, optimization, and innovation of a fictional company’s business processes. What exactly do you learn by playing the game? INN0V8 teaches the fundamentals of Business Process Management (BPM) by allowing you to virtually participate in a BPM project derived from IBM’s real world experiences. The game is intended to provide users with an understanding of the entire lifecycle of discovery, collaboration, and optimization of a company business processes. What are the major stages of the game? Level 1: Process discovery and process modeling Level 2: Collaboration driven simulation and iterative process improvement Level 3: Real-time business management Is this intended for business people or for IT people? This game is intended for anyone needing an introduction to the topic of Business Process Management. It does not assume any prior knowledge of BPM methodologies or technologies. It’s currently being used for both business and IT audiences. Does the game teach me how to use specific IBM products? INN0V8 teaches the concepts and methodologies of Business Process Management and while it exposes participants to common tools it does not provide training for specific IBM products. Is it only for Universities? IBM is making INN0V8 available first to participating members of its Academic Initiative. Details can be found here: In what type of class would this be used? Operations? Strategy? Other? As Business Process Modeling and Management is a critical skill to multiple facets of a business, the game could easily be part of any variety of coursework. What universities are already using the game? As of November 6th, 25 universities are currently piloting the game including Brandeis International Business School, Carnegie Mellon University, Duke University, Georgia State University, North Carolina State University, Pennsylvania State University, University of California at Berkeley, University of Georgia, University of North Carolina, Universite du Quebec en Outaouais, and University of Virginia. After November 6, 2007 over 2,000 universities around the world can download the game from IBM’s website and begin using it in their classrooms.

Is this related to Second Life? While both INN0V8 and Second Life are characterized by realistic 3d virtual experiences, there are no direct relations between the two. INN0V8 is not implemented in Second Life. Can I run INN0V8 off of the web? No, INN0V8 runs off your laptop or personal computer. Provided you have the installation media already, no network connection is required. Where do I go for support, updates, or to interact with other users? Go to the INNOV8 forum, available on the IBM developerWorks website at: What is the game programmed in? The game runs on the Vicious Engine. I've remember seeing these characters before, has IBM used them somewhere else? The fictitious characters in INN0V8 are consistent with characters used in IBM SOA movie, launched in Fall 2006. Why does it always rain? The rain is used to set the tone and ambiance of the game to feel like a mystery. The mystery is in uncovering the truth about After Inc. business processes and discovering how to improve them. Who is Logan modeled after? Logan is a fictitious character. Any resemblance to other persons, living or dead, is coincidental. Can you frag people? There are no weapons in INN0V8 other than sharp wits. So, no, you cannot frag people. I jumped off the steps. Why did I not get hurt? Characters in INN0V8 are impervious to physical injury. Think of it as permanent "invincible" mode. Why do the people from IT never smile? Characters are fictitious but the character Sam, who is from IT, has been working hard due to business process problems.
