Where can you train to be a film actor on Vancouver Island? For years, we have watched our best acting prospects relocate to Vancouver, Toronto, L.A. Now, local talent can get their training right here in town. September 26, 2012 Local Actors Inspired the Creation of a Full Time Acting Program in Victoria, BC Two young aspiring actors, Mark Morlock and Ana-Maria Butcura, along with a dozen other students, approached McCoy for full time acting training for Victoria actors. Full time acting students wanted to train locally in a foundational program so that they could compete for work locally and abroad. Being a full time actor means traveling, but having a home base in Victoria is priceless. Earlier this year, McCoy assembled a team of top notch instructors to be the core of the Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts. Enlisting the help of business consultant Kara Flanagan to create the infrastructure, the Academy opened its doors in April of this year, hosting evening classes and workshops in advance of the foundational program starting Oct. 1st. School is Open: Full Time Acting Program Launches Monday Oct. 1 In support of Victoria's dynamic film and theatre community, we are proud to launch the Victoria Academy of Dramatic Arts, dedicated to the training of actors for film, TV and theatre. It is the only school on the island which focuses on film, TV and theatre training. Other local schools focus on either film or theatre. The school has moved into a brand new facility at 618 Yates Street. Registered with the BC Government's Private Career Training Institutions Agency (PCTIA), we have a faculty of nine committed and experienced professionals. The Academy offers an intensive one-year diploma program, evening classes, private coaching and independent programs of study. The Academy is launching acting classes for kids starting in October as well. The Academy boasts a strong faculty, including Roderick Glanville, recently seen in Amadeus at the McPherson Playhouse. Jason Stevens, formerly based in London and New York, is a Laban Technique specialist – an approach used by actors such as Colin Firth and Paul Bettany. Guest instructor Jacqui Kaese has trained many of the island's success stories, including Cameron Bright, who worked with Nicole Kidman in Birth. Victoria's own Dylan Schmid of the ABC series Once Upon a Time, trained extensively with McCoy.

Quotes: "What you have to recognize instructing is that there are as many different vocabularies and acting languages as there are actors, so what you have to do is learn their language as quickly as you can so that you're able to help in a way that's specific to them." "Acting is a lifetime search of trying to find yourself. If you want to be in this program, you need to want it and be clear about what you're doing. It will be fun and challenging." - Joe McCoy, Artistic Director “Victoria needs a training facility like this to support our vibrant film industry” - Kathleen Gilbert, Film Commissioner, Vancouver Island South Film and Media Commission “Since working with Victoria Academy instructors I have booked a commercial, a nice part in an independent feature film, and acted on stage for the first time. It has been a great benefit to my confidence and ability to perform. I've decided to enroll in their full time program as I believe it is precisely what I need to take my career to the next level.” - Ana-Maria Butcura, Student Evening Classes The Academy hosts regular evening classes for new and experienced acting students and working actors. Classes include Introduction to Acting for Film & TV, Actor's Makeover, Combat in Performance, Improvisation for Beginners, Audition Technique & the Movie Biz, and more.
