Annual day celebrated

I was diagnosed as having diabetics one month ago and I am taking medicines. Now my blood sugar values are; fasting blood sugar – 112 mgs% and postprandial blood sugar -164 mgs%. Can I stop my diabetes medicines? The answer for your question is NO. Do not stop the medicines, otherwise the blood sugar will rise. The reductions in blood sugar values are due to the diet control, exercise and medicines. The diabetes medicines will reduce your blood sugar level by increasing insulin secretion from pancreas or increase the insulin action at peripheral sites. If you stop diabetes medicines, all these beneficial effects will be lose and will result in rise in blood sugar values. You can reduce the tablet dosage or you can shift to less potent anti -diabetic medications after consultation with your diabeteologist. Before stopping diabetes medicines, kindly check for HbA1c (three months average blood sugar level), blood cholesterol levels, urine microalbuminuria and blood pressure level. Try to make all the above parameters within the expected range along with blood sugar control to avoid complications.

Honing public speaking and leadership skills

The Installation and chartering ceremony of Madras Toastmasters Club was held at Andhra Chamber of Commerce on January 3. Abraham Zacharia, Division G Governor, installed the

new office bearers for the term January 2010 to July 2010. To a s t m a s t e r s International is a non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors elected by the membership. Toastmasters help one lose

the fear of public speaking and learn life skills. The programme in the community clubs of Toastmasters is designed in such a way that the members not only shed their fear of facing an

recognizing the negative thoughts, and changing them into positive and peaceful thoughts. The best way that we can create that change is to change our thoughts from being negative to positive. The best attitude towards meditation is to be very patient as the mind may not always want to focus. Having a sense of expectation towards positive results can create an uncomfortable pressure and thus take away the enjoyment of the experience. By practicing meditation regularly, the person who meditates gains a wonderful sense of the self. Meditation is a self-healing process; any form of stress is a sign of our negative thinking and disease within our mind. If we don't attend to the disease in the mind, we may find that chronic stress can lead to disease

prepared speeches, Table Topics (a Table Topics master gives an on-the-spot topic to a pulled out member, who speak for a minute or two) and an evaluation session. Madras Toastmasters Club

meets every Sunday at Andhra Chamber of C o m m e r c e , T. N a g a r from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. For details, contact Jayakar, president at 94440 04449.

Carnival at Kalamandir

Heal yourself through meditation

Meditation simply is sinking into our sea of consciousness, releasing the submerged stresses and coming to the point of inner stillness where there is no object of consciousness - but consciousness itself. An ordinary person may consider meditation as a worship or prayer. But it is not so. Meditation means awareness. Whatever you do with awareness is meditation. "Watching your breath" is meditation; listening to the birds is meditation. As long as these activities are free from any other distraction to the mind, it is effective meditation. The positive discovery about meditation is that we are focusing within ourself and becoming free of n e g a t i v i t y. M e d i t a t i o n techniques simply involve a process of transforming yourself, your thoughts, and

audience but also take up roles in planning and conducting a successful meeting. The installation of the office bearers was followed by an engrossing toastmaster session which had

of the body. Meditation is a method for acquainting our mind with virtue. The more familiar our mind is with virtue, the calmer and more peaceful it becomes. When our mind is peaceful we are free from worries and mental discomfort, and we experience true happiness. If we train our mind to become peaceful, we shall be happy all the time, even in the most adverse conditions. But if our mind is not peaceful, then even if we have the most pleasant external conditions, we shall not be happy. Therefore it is important to train our mind through meditation. Hundreds of thousands of people from all walks of life are finding that no matter what their goals, motivations, responsibilities or problems, they are able to act more clearly, more efficiently and more successfully with the aid of regular meditation. Ultimately, the only way to know if meditation will be useful for you is to give it a try. To spend some time each day in the dance of the soul. Above all, in meditation too, be happy! If you want to experience peace, meditate peacefully. If you want to know love, offer love first to yourself. Meditation is bliss ! Enjoy it Vikram V
