From the Editor’s Desk I’ve pondered Wyoming, not the word or the cartographic area, but its land, its vast wilds, and its people—staying or passing through. Wyoming is as much a state of mind as it is the nation’s forty-fourth state. Workers, a flower, the children, stories, a bird, residents, highways, artists, scents, the geology, visitors, emotions, the hunter, writers, a tree: Wyoming is these and the other things contributors offer in this issue of the Owen Wister Review. I offer my heartfelt thanks to the folks who’ve helped with this magazine. Emilene, you’ve been the do-it-all person on our team. I enjoyed learning from and working with you. Your keen eye was magical. Thanks for reading, selecting, editing, proofreading, and handling the myriad other tasks. Robert Roripaugh (father of OWR, Wyoming’s Poet Laureate emeritus, and writer extraordinaire) and Siri Nordvall (great writer, grad student, and tribute to North Dakota), thank you for reading and reading and reading some more. I asked my sweet lady, Barbara, for a cover concept. Barbara shot that cow (hide) and built an iron (on the computer) to burn into its side. Sweetie, I appreciate your work, your support, and your patience all these months. Professors Alyson Hagy, Ann McCutchan, and Mark Ritchie, thank you for encouraging and supporting your students. Their work reflects your teachings. Cary, thanks for your trust and for saying, “You decide; you’re the editor.” Jim, thanks for your graphic guidance and for saying, “You’re just the editor.” Garrett, thanks for pouring yourself into this challenge and making it happen.

Lynne Ruggles, you’re a gem. Without you, we wouldn’t have a magazine. Brenda Robbins and Barbara Thorpe, thank you both for your work. Victoria Sæland, Frontiers, and Kevin Wingert, Branding Iron, thanks for the laughs; it’s been fun.
