Season Preview

After falling in the WIAC championship game 1-0 to UWWhitewater last fall, a young UWStevens Point women’s soccer team looks to make a return trip to the title game in 2013. To do so, the Pointers will rely on a solid defense. The entire backline that yielded just 23 goals and recorded seven shutouts last year is back. The seasoned defense will be led by FirstTeam All-Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) performer Carly Falk (Green Bay, WI/ Bay Port), a senior, and sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Churkey (Mosinee, WI/D.C. Everest). In her first full year in goal, Churkey posted an 11-6-1 record and was among the conference leaders in several categories. Sophomore Shelley Samuel (Fond du Lac, WI/Fond du Lac) and junior Corey Reid (Rochester, MN/ Century) also bring experience to the defense, while fifth-year senior Kelsey Majerus (Cottage Grove, MN/Park) will anchor the midfield. Majerus is the top returning scorer for UWSP after scoring four goals last season. “Kelsey and Carly are our two seniors,” second year head coach Megan Schmidt said. “They are very physically and mentally strong and they really understand the game. They are two really strong assets.” Up front, the Pointers look to replace their top four scorers from last season in Angela Gallow (Menasha, WI/Menasha), Jessica Ruch (Fond du Lac, WI/Fond du Lac), Kim Jobke (Menomonee Falls, WI/Sussex Hamilton),

and Sammy Greer (Rubicon, WI/ Hartford). Gallow, a First-Team AllWIAC forward, led the team with 12 goals and her 28 points were third in the conference. Ruch was second on the team with 20 points and led the way with five game-winning goals, including two late goals against Eau Claire that sent the Pointers to the WIAC title game. Jobke added 16 points, while Greer was a first-team All-WIAC and National Scoccer Coaches Association of America Second-Team All-North Region player. The quartet combined to score 75 of the Pointers’ 116 points last season. The losses mean UW-Stevens Point will be young at forward but many of players in the mix do have experience. “We have really strong sophomore

and junior classes,” Schmidt said. “The team is young but the sophomores are really stepping up. We are going to rotate in a new group of forwards who are excited to take on a bigger role. The players are really excited.” The freshman class has also impressed Coach Schmidt at early season practices. There are nine freshmen on the UWSP roster vying for playing time, including forward Abbie Ullrich (Johnsburg, IL/Johnsburg), midfielder Delaney Boelter (Keshena, WI/ Shawano Community), and defenders Kelsey Blob (Menasha, WI/Menasha) and Madison Stevens (Lafayette, LA/ Lafayette). After leading UW-Stevens Point to a 13-6-1 record last fall as the interim coach, Schmidt enters her first full season as head coach. “I feel like I’m in my second year as head coach,” she said. “Having the title does not feel any different. We just need to carry on like we have.” A difficult non-conference schedule will Schmidt’s team early on. In addition to a home game against Wheaton (Ill.), one of the top teams in the country, the Pointers face four tough Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams in St. Thomas, Concordia-Moorhead, Macalester, and Carleton. “We have a very strong schedule,” Schmidt said. “Our early schedule will test us, but by the time we get to conference games, we will be able to see where our strengths and weaknesses lie. The game against St. Thomas is a big test, as it is always a 1-0 game either way.”

high goals but reachable goals. The ladies are excited to prove people wrong and we feel fine as underdogs.”

Despite having a relatively young team and a challenging schedule, the goals remain high for UWSP, who was picked to finish fourth in the WIAC this year. The Pointers were also picked to finish fourth last fall but made it all the way to the WIAC Championship game. “Our goal is always to be first in the conference,” said Schmidt. “When we get selected at a lower slot than we would like, it’s just one more thing to push us to be better. We need to try to not focus on the rankings too much and focus on our game.” After coming up one win short last year, the Pointers are looking to claim the WIAC’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament. UWSP has missed the NCAA tournament the last two years after making four straight appearances from 2007-10. “The goal is always to make the NCAA

tournament,” Schmidt said. “We want to continue to go to the championship game and try to get that automatic berth. If we do well in regional play, that will give us a good shot. We have

Megan Schmidt Head Coach Second Season Megan Schmidt is in her second season as head coach at UW-Stevens Point. Both a former UWSP studentathlete and assistant coach, Schmidt’s interim tag was lifted in the summer of 2012 when she was selected on a permanent basis following a national search. Schmidt is just the second head coach in the program’s storied history, taking over for Sheila Miech, who announced her retirement after 25 seasons with the program prior to the 2012 season. Schmidt was previously the top assistant coach under Miech for three seasons, primarily in charge of the defense. Under her guidance as head coach, the Pointers finished the 2012 season 13-6-1 and 5-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC), advancing to the league’s tournament championship game.

As a player for the Pointers, Schmidt was a four-time letterwinner from 2004-07 and served as team captain, earning all-conference honors once and leading the team to two NCAA tournament appearances. Schmidt also worked as a soccer instructor, youth coach and player development instructor in Long Island, N.Y, her alma mater Arrowhead High School and locally with Portage County Youth Soccer and PJ Jacobs. The Hartland, Wis.,native holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and earned her master’s degree in education in 2012. Schmidt also holds a USSF National D coaching certification. Schmidt also serves as an associate lecturer in the department of Physical Education and Athletic Training (PEAT).

aving won 14 conference championships in the past 20 years and made NCAA Division III tournament appearances 12 of the last 16 seasons, the list of accomplishments by the UW-Stevens Point women’s soccer team is astonishing. Here’s a look at the team’s impressive history: * The Pointers now have an 180-52-16 record over their last 248 matches, a winning percentage of .758.

Consecutive Winning Seasons Yrs Team From To 28 Rochester (N.Y.) 1982 present 28 Ithaca (N.Y.) 1982 present 26 William Smith (N.Y.) 1984 present 23 UW-Stevens Point 1988 present 21 Emory (Ga.) 1989 present 21 Macalester (Minn.) 1989 present 20 Mary Washington (Va.) 1986 2005

* The Pointers have won 14 of the 21 all-time WIAC championships and own an amazing conference regular season record of 139-15-7. They had the longest conference winning streak in NCAA history from 1997-2003 at 70 matches (including tournaments) and have outscored their WIAC opponents 801-89 all-time. * UW-Stevens Point has won 15 of the 21 all-time Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournaments. The Pointers are 45-2 all-time in tournament play and have outscored opponents 176-24. * The Pointers have had ten of the 14 17-win seasons recorded all-time by WIAC teams. * UW-Stevens Point has a 378-123-32 all-time record in 25 years and the 2012 season was its 24th consecutive winning season, which is the fourth longest current streak in Division III. Only Rochester (N.Y.), Ithaca (N.Y.) and William Smith (N.Y.) have more consecutive winning seasons and all of them had their streaks begin before UW-Stevens Point added women’s soccer in 1987. * UW-Stevens Point has a 16-14-2 all-time NCAA tournament record in 15 tournament appearances over the past 19 years. Until 2005, UW-Stevens Point was the only WIAC school ever to play an NCAA postseason contest. * UW-Stevens Point’s eight NCAA Division III tournament appearances from 1997-2004 was the secondlongest streak in the country. Only the College of New Jersey had more with 14 straight.
