Summer 2014

Vol. 36, No. 3

NEWSPA concludes another successful year by Barbara A. Benish NEWSPA Executive Secretary It’s a lot of work to put together the annual NEWSPA conference that draws hundreds of high school students, advisers and professionals to UW Oshkosh each spring. But the smiles make all the work worthwhile. Thankfully, there were a lot of smiles and good comments from the April 9 event at Reeve Memorial Union. Naturally, students were smiling and happy to have a day off school. But they were also smiling as they learned tips and techniques to take back to their schools and make their publications stronger. And they were smiling as they earned first-, second- or third-place honors for their writing, photography or design work at their school newspapers or yearbooks. I must admit; I smiled a lot, too. But then there was a lot to smile about. Nearly 400 students and advisers attended this year’s conference, showing last year’s declining enrollment was just a fluke rather than a trend. Twenty-two schools attended the 2014 NEWSPA conference, including three schools that had not participated at all or not for years, including Little Chute, St. Francis and Wausau East high schools. Kaitlin Wiza from Sevastopol High School and Michele Farnsworth from Green Bay East High School were voted onto NEWSPA’s amazing board of directors, while Aaron Ramponi from Appleton North and Jason Cummings

from Oshkosh North agreed to another term. The board members really are the ones who plan the conference, so if you have ideas for next year, please let them know. Mike DeSisti, the multimedia picture editor of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, was presented the Skip Zacher Friend of Scholastic Journalism Award winner for giving 16 NEWSPA presentations in nine years, while we surprised editorial cartoonist Joe Heller with a delicious cake congratulating him on his 35 consecutive years as being a NEWSPA presenter. In addition, Monica Ann Salmeri of Sevastopol High School was named the 2014 NEWSPA scholarship recipient; even better, she will be attending UW Oshkosh in the fall. But NEWSPA 2014 also showed how the organization must adapt quickly to challenges our schools and members face. So when Fond du Lac High School’s Cardinal Columns was forced to undergo prior review after running a story on rape jokes in February, we responded by adding a session on prior review. And while I can’t report that Fond du Lac School Supt. James Sebert has changed his mind about the policy, I can say that it looks like the district is willing to come up with a policy that both sides can live with. We’ll update you on what’s happening at Fond du Lac in our Fall 2014 newsletter. So until then, enjoy your summer and the time off. But don’t forget that NEWSPA is here to help you meet whatever challenges you face. Just let us know what we can do. And save the date — the 2015 conference will be held on April 22. I hope to see you then.

Photo by Cody Sinkula NEWSPA’s 2014 keynote speakers Nick Penzenstadler, Alex Gelhar, Amanda Betts and Jake White share their success stories to students at the NEWSPA Conference on April 9.

Overall nice work. Maybe focus more on the students in the class rather than getting right into the nuts and bolts of what the class was. Good use of students and teacher sources. Maybe focus a little more on students’ perspectives.

Middle and darker tones lack detail and lower part of the frame has people that pull the eye away from the interesting part of the photo. An engaging image that can be improved with cropping and tonal lightening.

The picture has a nice flow - leading front to back. Slide frame from left so less wall on right and flow continues on the left. There are many positive aspects and weak spots are small.

Centered compositions don’t impart a sense of energy, next time consider alternate compositions. Also, be consistent in your rendering style - you used a ruler for the jail cell but went totally freehand on the phone. Great idea that got my attention and made me laugh!

1st Place Review

Eli Lonzick Hartford Union High School Large School

Comments

A lot of thought and listening went into this and it shows. Reviews often times are more about ideas than writing - fancy lines mean nothing without informed opinions/observations inside them. Very well done. A nice lead and closing graph that looks to the future and yet reflects the subject at hand. Maybe a bit heavy on song quotes and you might want to get to the main idea/opinion earlier, but that’s nitpicking. Bravo! uwosh.edu/journalism/newspa 15

This shot is lit very well and captures the faces nicely. Consider cropping the bottom portion so the audience is not in the shot to distract the viewer or move closer to the stage.

Comments

This photo is a great reaction shot, but we don’t know what they’re reacting to. A caption would help give the photo some context but the expressions on the girls’ faces are captured nicely. The cone to the right is distracting as well as the ladder to the left, which some tighter cropping would easily solve.

De Sisti wins 2014 Skip Zacher Award by Haley Walters NEWSPA’s 2014 Skip Zacher Friend of Scholastic Journalism Award was presented to Milwaukee Journal Sentinel video journalist Mike De Sisti for his outstanding involvement in advancing journalism education. “It feels good to be recognized no matter what you’re doing,” De Sisti said. “I’m just doing what I love.” De Sisti said he began exploring photo journalism during his senior year of college after receiving a job as a photographer at his school’s student newspaper, but it took awhile for him to be convinced that photo journalism was the right career for him. Longtime presenter awarded by Haley Walters Cartoonist Joe Heller received a sweet surprise at NEWSPA’s 2014 conference in recognition of his 35 years of involvement with the student journalism organization. NEWSPA presented a cake to Heller during the 2014 conference on April 9, which he then graciously shared with the many attendees of his editorial cartoon drawing workshop. Heller has been inspiring students to create cartoons each year at the NEWSPA spring conference for more than three decades, and NEWSPA wanted to show its appreciation for his hard work and fun presentations. “Joe Heller has inspired numerous students with his passion for editorial cartoons,” NEWSPA President Sara Marquardt said He teaches students how to make creative and engaging editorial cartoons for their student publications in his sessions that always attract a crowd of students curious about making their cartoons better.

Heller was awarded a cake for his 35 years of presenting at the conference. “After 35 years of presenting, but he still has the enthusiasm for his craft,” Marquardt said. “I don’t know how many students I’ve met over the years that rave about his session and can’t wait to go again the next year.”

Heller currently works as a freelance cartoonist after spending 28 years at The Green Bay Press Gazette as their editorial cartoonist. His work primarily focuses on politics or social issues and has appeared in publications such as Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report and The National Review. “NEWSPA is so lucky to have such a talented artist that can really relate to young journalists,” Marquardt said.
