SARAH, Middleton, Wis.

“I attended a different UW school until after my junior year, when I got an offer to work in Costa Rica. After a few years living abroad, I decided I wanted to finish my degree but I wasn’t ready to move back to the United States. I love Costa Rica. I have a job, friends and a home here. So, I started looking for a program that would allow me to do my last year online and I found UW Milwaukee. UWM offered the whole history degree online. Going back to school online was one of the best choices I have ever made. Professors have made lessons accessible by providing Powerpoints, lectures, video clips and discussion forums, which make me feel like I am sitting in the classroom with classmates again. The program is great, and it turns out that online learning is fun and interactive.”

MENTORS FOR TRANSFER STUDENTS You’ll have your own peer mentor, a current UWM student employee who can answer any questions related to your transition to UWM. Your peer mentor will contact you early in your first semester. Peer mentors host a variety of events and are available for personalized campus tours. uwm.edu/studentsuccess

“You have to get involved in college, no matter what type of student you are. The more engaged you are there the more engaged you will be with the people and the community. I became a Peer Mentor and a student senator, because I love being socially engaged and representing my school. It can be harder for nontraditional students; I have two part-time jobs on and off campus, and I am a caregiver, but finding time to be immersed in the college culture is very important to me also. When you look at the end goal, you know it is worth it.”

Diagnostic Medical Sonography Military Career: Weapons Department Petty Officer 3rd class/AO3, U.S. Navy

“When I separated from the Navy, I knew I wanted to go to school to become an Obstetric Sonographer. UWM’s program was more affordable than others and offered several resources geared toward the success of veterans. UWM takes pride in taking care of their military and veteran students, and the Military and Veterans Resource Center (MAVRC) has been especially helpful. They go above and beyond. Even though it was all a little overwhelming at first, I’ve been able to get answers to all my questions and I’ve taken advantage of the many resources available such as the PASS office for tutoring, and the Writing Center for help with papers and reports. My experience here has really influenced my life for the better by providing me all I need to achieve my goals.”

MONEY

WELL SPENT UWM: A GOOD VALUE AND AN EVEN BETTER INVESTMENT We realize that the cost of college is the No. 1 concern for many adult students. If you’re wondering whether a four-year university is still worth the investment, consider this:

It is vitally important that students know that there is a great deal of money available in scholarships. A number of free scholarship websites can be found at uwm.edu/scholarships.

A worker with a bachelor’s degree can expect to earn about $1 million more than a high school graduate over a 40-year career, according to a report by the U.S. Census Bureau. And now is the perfect time to join UWM.

Financial aid and scholarships can make the UWM experience even more affordable, and nearly 80 percent of our students receive aid. UWM also offers a variety of scholarships, including the Life Impact Program for students with dependent children and scholarships just for transfer students.
