SHIRLEY TAN ‘17 A couple of weeks ago, spontaneous dayroom meetings were called to order in every dorm on campus. No one knew why and the presence of SWEET members sitting in every dayroom brought on more questions as students gathered. Once everyone settled into the dayroom, the SWEET members began and a somber mood settled over the dayroom. At least in Aconcagua, with Rekhia and Maymouna present, the topic of discussion was taken very seriously. They brought up something that no one in the room expected to be brought up: date rape drugs. According to them, someone had approached faculty with the concern of date rape drugs being on campus. It is unclear whether these allegations are true; but SWEET and faculty both thought it would be beneficial to the campus to have a talk about how to behave should the claims be true. During the dayroom meeting, some helpful advice was given. Of course, date rape drugs should not be on campus and should not be used to begin with, but this knowledge can be useful for preventative measures. It is important to never accept random drinks from people you do not know too well. Leaving drinks unattended in large crowds is also a bad idea. In new places, it is probably also best to stay with a friend or let a friend know where you are at all times. However, should these preventative steps fail, one should also be able to spot the effects of a date rape drug. Most are odorless and tasteless, so it’s impossible to know until you experience the
effects, such as nausea, lightheadedness, fatigue, etc. Overall, the attitude on campus surrounding this seems to be a very mixed one. Some think it is a joke—how could these drugs have been snuck onto campus, right? Others, however, are very concerned, especially regarding the consequences it could mean for members of this community and the reputation of UWC. Since no absolute information has been given yet, though, we should be level-headed about it. We definitely should not ignore the potential danger of the situation by mocking it but there is no need to freak out about it either. The most worthwhile action we can take right now is being careful. At the moment, it seems like there is no proof there is actually any sort of date rape drug on campus. Linda sent out an email on the 23rd of January reassuring students that to her knowledge, “there has not been any confirmed use of this (date rape) drug at UWC-USA” However, should anyone hear anything, going to a member of faculty or a SWEET member would be a good idea. Contact information for the SWEET team and other resources are also posted in every dorm bathroom.
DUAN TU ‘16 In a world with amazing medical technologies, where viruses can be genetically modified to treat brain tumors, where gene therapy can reprogram immune cells to cure Leukemia, where 3D printing can regrow nerves and full skull, (yes, the same way Wolverine and Deadpool do) people are always very surprised when viruses like ZIka appear out of the blue. “It happened suddenly about a year ago and at first people wouldn`t believe there was such disease that shrinks new-born babies` heads. Since there is almost no symptoms on adults, people still know very little about Zika.” Caio Arias (`17), a Brazilian student, told me during the interview. First isolated from rhesus monkeys in Uganda in 1947, Zika virus was found infecting small number of human population with only mild symptoms such as headache, fever, a rash and bloodshot eyes in Asia and Pacific Islands. However, since May of last year, there has been a drastic increase in cases of microcephaly (smallness of head of new-born infants, which causes incomplete brain development) emerging in Brazil, and the scary symptom was suspected to be linked to Zika virus. The virus began in Brazil and rapidly spread to much of South and Central America, and the Caribbean. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), more than 3500 microcephaly cases were reported between October 2015 and January 2016. Some of the affected infants have had a severe type of microcephaly and some have died. Transmitted mainly through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, Zika is most
prevalent in poor neighborhoods with massive areas of still water and muddy roads, as well as high population density. These characteristics coupled with a warm tropical climate provide the mosquitoes with a perfect habitat. Rio de Janeiro, the famous touristic location where the statue of Christ the Redeemer is located, is the second largest city in Brazil with a population of over 6 million. Despite its great GDP, there are significant disparities between the rich and the poor in Rio de Janeiro, and different socioeconomic groups are largely segregated into different neighneigh borhoods. “My city Rio de Janeiro is one of the hardest-hit areas of Zika, and people in the poor neighborhood are especially afraid of the disease. Because I`m from middle class background, I`m mostly safe, but I know people from lower-income families at risk.” Caio told me. What normally rise along with epidemics are social concerns and political controversies. Given the current severe epidemic situation, there have been growing concerns on the safety of prospective Summer Olympics in six months in Rio de Janeiro. The city authority claimed that during Olympics the cooler and drier winter climate will naturally lower mosquito population which would ensure low transmission rate of the virus. The government is trying to prevent the spread of Zika. Since it is suspected that infant microcephaly is related to Zika virus, several Latin American governments have urged women not to get pregnant for up to two years as a precaution against the birth defects. The government recommendation aroused wide oppugn from feminist advocates in Latin America who stated that government advice to avoid getting pregnant because of the risks posed by Zika virus was irresponsible, because government should manage public health care to protect women from catching the virus instead of imposing birth control on them. For Latin America, a region that is largely Roman Catholic, birth control has always been a controversial political topic. The emergence of Zika initiated new rounds of discussions on this already heated issue.
from her 2008 campaign”, recognized after watching her excellent endorsement speech that this is who they need. “A person that will attract people with radical ideas, promote the war between the traditional American values and Islam, and tell them that it is okay to be racist.”
SZYMON GALAZKA ‘16 After an endorsement for Donald Trump, the dream of every student studying logical fallacies, Sarah Palin decided to move even further and, as Literati confirmed in a conversation with Palin’s PR aide, she is now on her way to meet the leader of Daesh, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Donald Trump recently realized that his voters, commonly referred to as misinformed (or in Mr. Trump’s language: idiots), are flocking to Ted Cruz. The Texan’s team had worked endlessly and as time passed, it understood that in order to appeal to large numbers of Republican voters, Mr. Cruz needs to limit his vocabulary to one-syllable words, such as “Obama” and “sucks”. Mr. Trump was truly infuriated, yet Sarah Palin, a famous imbecile electorate representative, increased the popularity of the magnate after affirming that Donald “knows the main thing”. Truly captivated by such strong words, the imbeciles started returning to the candidate blessed by Palin’s words, as reflected in the Iowa and New Hampshire polls. Yet Ms. Palin is embarking on an even more vital quest now. As confirmed by her aide, she is currently on her way to meet Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, who is known to follow her on Snapchat and have watched her speech on YouTube from the Republican National Convention in 2008 seven times. The spokesman for al-Baghdadi brought up that the Daesh leader, as “a hardcore fan with a merchandise collection
When asked about Palin’s trip to the territory occupied by ISIS, Bernie Sanders briefly responded “I hope that at least she’s got Sean Penn going with her”.
