editor’s note

To returners, welcome back to school and to new students – welcome to UWA! 2017 was a whirlwind of a year, and I honestly cannot wait for 2018. A friend once quoted Abraham Lincoln to me, “In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It is the life in your years.” Your university years are bound to be one of the best times in your life, and I hope that you have a fulfilling one ahead. Right now, the Lighthouse magazine is in your hands. This magazine is created by your very own UWA Student Guild International Students’ Service. We publish this at the start of every semester for you to get the low-down on what UWA has to offer, as well as some cheeky tips from us. From food, to accommodation, to places to visit - I’m sure that you’ll never be bored in Perth. The theme of this year’s Lighthouse magazine is Continuation. The revamped magazine was a huge success last year, and we intend to continue the tradition with a whole lot of new ideas for you. As an international student, I am sure that one of your concerns will be where to find good food (I know it was mine) and we’ve got that covered for you. From Campus Food which guides you to the different cafes (and a bar) to our favourite food locations around Perth, I’m sure that you’ll be full with all these choices. As a diverse university community, the UWA Student Guild continues to improve students’ lives by introducing many different types of food. This magazine also focuses on the international students of UWA. There is a variety of experiences for you to read about - residential colleges, road trips around Perth and even some simple exercises that you can do in the comfort of your own home. When I first entered UWA, I was filled with questions and I honestly did not know if I could adapt, but there is no doubt that coming to UWA was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I hope that you enjoy your student life here – it’s sure to be heaps of fun. Welcome to UWA, it’ll be a blast! Love, The Lighthouse Team

spring feast Multicultural Week (MCW) is a weeklong cultural festival at UWA which students look forward to each year in Semester 2. MCW aims to promote and share the appreciation of the different cultures through events run throughout the week. This year MCW will be held from Monday 1st to Friday 5th October. Save the date for Spring Feast on Thursday 4th October. It’s the highlight of the week bringing thousands of people to enjoy an incredible night of indulging in cultural foods, performances, and giveaways. It is no doubt the largest studentrun event on campus, featuring food stalls, food trucks and stalls by UWA clubs. There also will be performances showcasing the talent of our various student societies. Throughout the year, the Multicultural Week Committee also runs a barrage of events leading up to MCW itself. Semester 1 features Mid-Autumn Festival that is run during the day to give a taste of what Spring Feast is like. The main goal for 2018 is to actively promote multiculturalism more on campus and beyond the UWA community. You can expect to see interesting events to attend this year! Like us on Facebook (www.facebook.com/multiculturalweek) and follow our Instagram (@uwamulticulturalweek) to keep up to date with what the Multicultural Week Committee is doing and what events are being held! Send a message through if you’re interested in joining the committee and have your say in what kind of events you’d like to see on campus! Jacqueline Adenan Managing Director 2018 Multicultural Week

off campus food

MEI’S NOODLES SHOP // BOWEN MI The Chinese student community in UWA should be very familiar with Mei’s noodles. They are not only a lunch-time snack but also represent memories of a home that is sorely missed. Mei has a special way of mixing these rice noodles and the result is, to me, simply out of this world. Anyone who has had it can taste the peanut butter, pepper, aromatic vinegar, sesame oil and chicken soup - but without any hint of MSG or oily aftertaste. Once you’ve had a taste of it, you can’t stop. The serving size is really generous. A bowl provides a sense of fullness and satisfaction, leaving you feeling contented. Mei also serves steaming hot chicken soup with paper-thin chicken breasts, vegetables and one quail egg. Stir it for a few seconds and it is ready to be eaten. Location 9/18 Milford Street, East Victoria Park

7GRAMS KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN // ESTHER GAN On days where you start to crave some juicy fried chicken with an impeccable coating of crunch, 7Grams Chicken is the place to look for. Different from the usual fried chicken, 7Grams Chicken is an authentic Korean-style fried chicken that will surely change your world with their variety of flavourful sauces. 7Grams present you with ten different flavours, perfect to share with your friends. If you are feeling a little bit daring, go ahead and try the spicy chilli and if you’re feeling indecisive, mix and match flavours by ordering the special combo! With every bite you take, you will be able to taste the different spices slowly kicking in, surprising your taste buds. To top it off, the side dishes are perfect for cleansing your palate before indulging in a different flavour. Their portions are known to be pretty big, so be careful or you might just fall into a food coma! Location 410 Fitzgerald Street, North Perth

GOOD FORTUNE ROAST DUCK HOUSE // HAZEL TAN Good Fortune Roast Duck House serves authentic barbecued pork, barbecued pork rib, roast pork and… you guessed it! Roast duck! Their menu consists of porridge, rice and noodle dishes, all of which comes with meat of your choosing and a small side of vegetables. Personally, I prefer the boneless roast duck with rice over the roast duck with rice, because the additional fifty cents paid to remove the bones is definitely worth it. The meat is tender, succulent and fatty -- all the wonderful qualities of roast duck. The rice is aromatic and the salty gravy complements the sour plum sauce. The restaurant waiters have bowls of gravy at the counter, just in case you want more! Good Fortune Roast Duck House has their very own website, where they post their in-house as well as takeaway menu. If you are in the mood for Chinese cuisine, it is my pleasure to inform you that they serve Chinese delicacies such as Drunken Chicken, Suckling Pig, Peking Duck and more! Location 354 William Street, Perth 6000

SEDAP PLACE // IYLIA SHUKOR Located in Victoria Park lies the ever so crowded and famous Sedap Place. Serving authentic and scrumptious food, it has a wide variety of Malaysia’s finest delicacies ranging from prata to nasi lemak and the volcanic laksa. It is definitely a go-to place for those craving authentic Malaysian cuisine. Be it to family or friends, I would always recommend Sedap Place as the place to eat. Apart from the amazing food and service, I love the sight of the Milo Tower. It serves between six to eight cups, allowing many to share. Another dish that is best for sharing would be the famous nasi lemak. It comes with four side dishes, anchovies, sambal, eggs, cucumber and the fragrant coconut rice. This is the reason why you will always be coming back for more! Location 876 Albany Highway, East Victoria Park

SILVER SUSHI // HAZEL TAN Silver Sushi is a favourite haunt for all your Japanese cravings. They have a wide array of food to choose from, which can be served in-house or made to order for takeaway. This cozy little restaurant south of the river certainly does not disappoint if you have an appetite for Japanese cuisine. The menu offers everything from bento sets, udon, curry rice, sushi rolls, sashimi and assorted sushi to uramaki. Uramaki, which roughly translates to “inside-out roll”, is a variation of sushi with rice on the outside and seaweed on the inside. My personal favourite is the Spider Roll, which has a soft shell crab bundled within the rice and is layered with spicy mayo. It is absolutely delectable in terms of taste and delivers a crunch with every bite. If you are planning a party and want something fresh (yes, pun intended) on the table other than the usual pizza and Nando’s, Silver Sushi also offers a gigantic sushi platter for $50. Just remember that you have to call and make your order two hours in advance before pick-up! Location 1/41 Burrendah Boulevard, Willetton

With the new uni year approaching, there are new events for all international students to look forward to. There will be the usual orientation, Rottnest Island trip and study packs given out. Apart from those, we are looking forward to having new functions and events to improve the welfare and student life of international students. These will provide opportunities for students to interact with each other and have fun!

// STUDY PACKS Right before every mid-semester and final exam period, ISS will give out study packs to international students to cope with the last minute study grinds. These bags will contain delicious treats that will not only provide the energy to spur you on, but a little reminder of what home tastes like too! Keep an eye out for our study pack giveaways as they run out fast with a record of less than 30 minutes!

// ROTTNEST ISLAND TRIP The Rottnest Island trip is our most well-known event held every mid-semester break that allows students to explore the renowned island at a low price. This trip is fun and relaxed, allowing you to unwind and socialise after a hectic schedule. On Rottnest, you will be able to see the island’s native animal the quokka. There is a chance to snag a selfie with them smiling! This year’s trip will be held in the mid-semester break of semester 1. Tickets are limited, so watch out for when they go on sale and get in quick!

// ODAY Held at the end of Orientation Week (on Friday 23 February 2018), ODAY is a chance for new and returning students to join any of the student clubs at UWA (there are over 150!), find out about all the cool opportunities and useful services available on campus, and pick up heaps of free stuff! Trust us, you don’t want to miss out. This year, look out for the ice cream van, free energy drinks and iced tea, and the food trucks on Oak Lawn.

college life ST GEORGE’S COLLEGE // YIXIAN LI I’ve been living in St George’s since I was an undergrad and I can’t imagine what my life would be like if I did not impulsively fill in that application form while waiting for a connecting flight. As an international student, being at college is totally different from other residential options. It offers an intimate connection with local students, networking opportunities with successful people from various fields and the chance to get to know other international students. One of my favourite part of college culture is definitely the formal academic dinners where we dress up like wizards, settle down with a glass of wine and watch some music performances. It is a great opportunity to see everyone dressed up and looking very dapper. In college, I am always left amazed at all the talented people. Many of them are great singers (St. George’s has both female and male a cappella groups) and also play different musical instruments. It is always lovely to watch their performances and rehearsal videos. Some of the residents do not major in music but they are extremely passionate and their sense of enthusiasm, contagious.

The best part of living in college is that I never felt alone as there is always someone who I can talk to and spend time with. For example, there is the Tuesday afternoon tea, a no-phone rule in the dining hall and tutorial group events. College is the place to make life-long friends no matter your cultural background or native tongue, as long as you have an open mind. Honestly, college life sometimes is a little challenging – somewhat like a bottleneck where I’ve known almost everyone but am not as exceptionally close with some. I found myself thinking about how to make close friends. Do I have to change myself or remain as I am? I’m sure, like many international students, everyone will encounter these questions. Here’s a tip, you can try to step out of your comfort zone or stay the way that you feel the most comfortable and just be yourself!

LIVING IN TOMMY MORE // FANDI WU As an exchange student from China, I’ve been living in St Thomas More College (commonly known as Tommy More) for nearly four months. When I look back at my first two months, I’m shocked yet gratified to find how much I’ve improved, and how much UWA and Tommy More has provided for me. This was my first time studying abroad. Moreover, it was also my first time using English so much – in class, exams and everyday life – as it is not my first language. I struggled a lot during this transition. For instance, I’ve called a rubbish bag a “luggage bag” during a trip organized by Tommy More and kept repeating it to other students which led to them being extremely confused.

TOMMY MORE WINTER BALL // SEAN SOH The Tommy Winter Ball was the first actual college event that I was involved in. Still fresh from my move to Perth and unacquainted with the culture, I was convinced to go for the ball with my neighbour and a few other friends. It was a decision that I did not regret because not only did I get to mingle with others, I finally felt like a part of the college. The ball was held in Pan Pacific Hotel and I could feel the sense of belonging as we were greeted by familiar faces and energy from fellow college students. We were shown to our tables and that was where the fun kicked in. From the get go, we could see that everyone was excited and ready to have fun. We were served our first of three courses and the conversations began to flow effortlessly. The ballroom was beautifully decorated with the colours of the college and the air of excitement in the room was overwhelming, in a good way of course. The photo booth and the dance floor were the highlights as everyone flocked to have their photos taken with friends and to just dance their pants off (quite literally). Everyone dressed in their best suits and resplendent gowns contributed to the grandiose atmosphere of the ballroom. Even though it was not easy to fit in with the general crowd, we are not that much different. We are students looking for an outlet to relieve some stress and have some fun. We all just needed that push to say hi to those around us and that could lead to friendships. I’m glad to say that I broadened my social circle through the ball and I encourage everyone to attend the next one - especially international students, because what better way to adapt to a new environment than to jump right into it and experience it all first hand?

During my first month at UWA, I was extremely lost. I felt that the teaching method and how units were allocated was completely different, even the language used. Over time, I made more friends in college. We went to the library together during our busiest times to prepare for our examinations and exchanged stories and our goals while walking back to college, at the same time encouraging each other to achieve our own dreams. Living in college has brought me more friends as I am not the kind of person who likes to take the initiative to say hi to a total stranger, let alone people who do not speak the same language as me. However, after living there for nearly one semester, I’ve found that when I am not hesitant in approaching people, I end up making a new friend. Tommy More’s first impression for me was that it is a place of relaxation due to the hammocks hanging from the trees. Music rooms are hidden in the different blocks for students to chill and have fun. I found myself enjoying reading books or doing assignments under the jacaranda trees due to the tranquility the place provides me. Moreover, if I do not feel like studying, I would go straight to the big recreational room to play some foosball with my friends or just lay on the sofa to watch movies. Other activities also include table tennis and snooker. During my time in Tommy More, I’ve enjoyed the smiles and greetings from Janine as I made my way to school, getting help from my friends when I’m struggling with my units, chilling with my friends and also meeting Monkey (the college dog) every time I go to the reception. Nearly five months has passed since I’ve arrived in Australia, and with all sorts of help, I’ve learned, changed and grown.

college life TRINITY: TRI-FACTOR EXPERIENCE // CALVIN LO As a third year postgraduate student who has lived in Trinity for five years, I am blessed to call this my second home, my “Straya-n” home. Granted the privilege to account for the Trinity experience, I can’t think of a more fitting way than to share my experiences and insights through the core values Trinity is built on – friendship, learning and growth. As overused, bland and seemingly simple these three jointed words may be, these core values have stood the test of time. I find that the more mature a person becomes, the more the person will recognize and appreciate these values for their deep-rooted truths and weight they bear. I hope that my account resonates well with you, and that you would consider Trinity your future home. Friendship Despite the unfamiliarity of living abroad and having no familyfriend connections, I had one of my best university years as a Trinity fresher. A huge part of that was due to the genuine people I met who embraced me with warm loving arms. For example: • The Resident Advisors who became my pseudo-parents. They ensured I settled down well and was comfortable with my dormstay, they also helped break the ice with the other students like me who were in similar shoes, and that despite them graduating in 2013 we still make it a point to have coffee or dim sum every now and then. • The Resident’s Club members. I still vividly remember the president coming up to me and shaking my hand, and he later came to sit with me at the dining hall and told me about the Resident’s Club events that are conducive for making friends and having fun. • Friends living in the corridor-style dorms. Most of us kept our doors open to encourage interaction amongst us, whether it be coming to a friend with an academic question, asking for a pickup game of basketball or a spontaneous proposal for a Hungry Jack’s drive-by. • Friends who are Western Australian locals wanting to share their lives and culture, whether it be a visit to their grandparent’s home in Mandurah to catch crabs, or a visit to their parent’s farm in Wagin where I got to drive a tractor in the canola fields and also help guide sheep to the shearing shed. • Exchangers coming from all parts of the world. Just as the local students embraced me, I wanted to do the same. For example, I would host an annual global-themed potluck where everyone brought a dish from home – an opportunity to broaden our palate and enjoy some new taste experiences. More importantly, our friendships strengthened, and casual food-dates led to road trips and subsequent visits to each other’s home countries.

Learning With the proverb “birds of a feather flock together” in mind, what better way to learn than live in a diverse community comprised of young ambitious adults? In Trinity, you’ll find that most students share a common goal to excel in their studies. An attractive amenity of Trinity is its Resource Centre (a two level building with different learning spaces) and quiet-study halls. During periods close to the exam dates, you’ll find students in these study areas working together, whether it be practicing presentations or solving past exam questions. Sometimes, you might experience periods of laughter and deep conversations over supper and coffee provided by the college. Furthermore, Trinity also leverages its senior residents by asking them to hold academic tutorials for those who may be struggling in their current units or require more motivation to set time for study. I personally enjoy teaching as it helps me refresh and retain prior knowledge I’ve acquired, and it’s also a constructive way to establish new friendships. Growth Growth is often associated with moving outside one’s comfort zone, and there are many ways to elicit growth. With regards to personal growth, moving out of home into a residential college can foster independence in comfortable yet progressive increments. Living in a diverse community, one must learn the importance of open-mindedness and respecting others. Conflicts and dissatisfaction occur at times, but we learn to resolve them in a respectful manner without undermining each other. We learn to embrace differences and strive to seek the good using reason, while also mustering the courage to stand with the minority against popular yet unrighteous beliefs.

UNIVERSITY HALL LIFE // SUN JIAYUE I definitely made a wise decision four years ago to move into University Hall, a place that I call home. Settling down in a foreign country, especially as a non-native English speaker, is particularly tough and challenging. Apart from having to be familiar with the language, everything was completely different from what I was used to in my home country. However, I found out that I did not need to worry about anything after all. From the very first day, I received the warm welcome from friendly residential advisors and staff. Their smiles and patience were my best stress relievers. They organized everything perfectly, from the welcome packs and snacks to the check-in process. So, all I had to do was just to take care of my luggage. During orientation week, there were various activities available for me. Through these activities, I was not only involved in the warm community but also got familiar with Perth. With activities such as laser tags, city tours, group dances – you name it, it probably happened. I never got bored of the activities held at Uni Hall.

Uni Hall also understands the importance of a work-life balance. College tutorial sessions are organised by the academic team to help improve students’ academic performance. To encourage residents to pursue high academic achievements, Uni Hall awards achievers on academic ceremony night. Being able to attend this ceremony acts as an important motivator for everyone to study hard. Another reason why students choose to live at Uni Hall is the convenience. It’s only a two-minute walk away from the main campus which has helped me get to classes on time. Starting a new life in a foreign country can be extremely hard, I would say. However, living in Unihall has helped me tackle those challenges easily. I believe that it helps open countless doors to a great student experience at UWA.

The annual ball is one the best events I ever experienced. There is a different theme every year and it’s the most exciting opportunity for every hall resident to interact with each other. Of course, these activities are never completed without the awesome people. Residents come from different parts of the world such as China, Singapore, the UK, South Korea, Vietnam, and Dubai. I benefitted a lot from the diverse community, not only through excellent opportunities to learn new languages but also in developing a new perspective that is valuable in a highly globalized world.

health and sports

We know what it’s like to be busy on days where there are a ton of assignments and examinations to study for. However, just because you’re unable to find time to go to the gym, it doesn’t mean you can’t work out. Introducing Metabolic Circuit Training! It involves progressing from one movement to another with little rest in between. It’s most efficient when incorporating fullbody exercises. The more muscles used, the more energy and oxygen the body will require which creates a deficit that will burn calories during and after the exercise. This style of training will result in positive changes in endurance, body composition and metabolism. This program requires no equipment, so you can do it at home or in the park.

decrease the rest time, do the circuit more than once or all of the above. There are plenty of body weight exercises that you can do – find one that you love doing and feel free to switch the circuit up. You could even ask a friend to join you in the work out and push each other. Consistency is the key to your progress so if you enjoy working out, you actually look forward to getting your sweat on and what better way to do it with a friend.

// ROUND ONE • Close grip push ups • Jump squats • Leg raises • Crunches

A Chinese film by Mengting Guan PHOTO BY CITYONFIRE.COM

2018 will be a big year for the Chinese film industries as many movies that have been anticipated will be released. One of them would be “Shadow”. It is directed by the same person who brought you “The Great Wall”, Zhang Yimou. Though there has been little revealed about the project, it has been reported to be a historical picture set in the Three Kingdoms Era. So why should you watch Shadow? Here are a few of my reasons Attitude The director has been criticised before for instilling political and commercial agendas, there is definitely no doubt that his success has been attributed from hard work and professionalism. With him starting to prepare for this movie way before the production date – it showed me that he had high expectations for the film and would end up being a well-shot movie. Actors The protagonist was so dedicated to his role that he lost 20kg for the movie. Moreover, the movie is filled with famous Chinese actors that were brought together for one huge movie. Aesthetics Movies that have a good grasp of aesthetics comprising of well thought of sets and excellent acting tend to impress their audiences. With fantastic costumes and lavish scenery, it encompasses the importance of artistic vision of the film. From the released photos, it is obvious that the director has put an immense amount of efforts in this film in order to provide the audiences with unique aesthetic experiences.

// Bochao Zhang // Photo by femalefirst.co.uk A highly-anticipated movie of this year is Peter Rabbit. He is a fictional animal character in a series of children’s stories by Beatrix Potter and he first appeared in “The Tale of Peter Rabbit” in 1902. I’m sure that many of you would have read Peter Rabbit when you were a kid as your bedtime stories.

This movie about the cute rabbit coupled with its interesting stories will bring back many memories of our childhood. The film focuses on the feud between Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor over the affection of the kind animal lover living next door. It will be an eventful story and at the same time, the actors are fit

for the film. Some of the notable actors include James Corden, Margot Robbie and the singer, Sia. From the trailer, this movie looks to be a lot of fun, merging both CGI and live action. It will be exciting to see what events both Peter Rabbit and Mr. McGregor will get up to!

abalone season

The abalone season has been around for a month, and fishing it is definitely my favorite activity over the summer. During the harvesting period, these little creatures are everywhere along the shore. Note – before you start hunting, you need to buy a license from the WA Department of Fisheries.
