UUSIC News and Events: Facilities Committee Update and Forum Dates The Facilities Steering Committee invites all members and friends of UUSIC to the next round of facilities forums: Tuesday, April 22nd at 7 pm in the library, Saturday, April 26th at 10 am in the Fireside Room, and Sunday, April 27th at 1 pm in the Fireside Room. Childcare will be provided. We will discuss reports from four subcommittees that have been exploring possibilities for new facilities. The subcommittees are: • • • •

Property (remodeling an existing structure in a new location) Land (finding new land to build on) 10 South Gilbert (rebuilding at our current location) Greenest Church in Iowa (building with environmentally sound practices)

Many interesting possibilities have come to light with the work of these subcommittees. Links to their reports can be found here Input from the congregation is crucial as we explore different issues. One is the possibility of hiring one or more experts who could guide us through the steps of the building process (e.g., a project manager, realtor, or developer). Another issue is the possibility of a partnership with the city or other parties if we rebuild at 10 South Gilbert (there have been two informal meetings with the city that have revealed the possibility of a mutually beneficial partnership). In addition, the FSC needs input from the congregation regarding building a facility that will embody our mission and vision and reflect who we are as a community. Finally, since none of the above possibilities can be ruled out at this time, the work of each committee will continue and there will be no facilities vote in May as originally planned. (Note that we are making progress and Adam and Brigette Ingersoll are extending the deadline to meet the terms of their matching funds). Owl Moon CUUPs Workshops, Apr. 12 Join us on Saturday, April 12th for two workshops with Teri Parsley Starnes, a professional astrologer. The first workshop, “Elemental Devotion through Moon Wisdom,” will be from 10 am - 12:30 pm. We will explore what a devotional relationship to the elements looks and feels like through song, movement, and ritual. The second session, “Follow the Moon,” will take place from 2 - 4 pm. In this workshop, we will explore the phases of the Moon. Both sessions are free. To find out more about the workshop check out the April newsletter or the event details on the calendar. To request childcare, contact Marsha Cheyney at 321-2307 or That’s Entertainment! Apr. 12 The UUSIC’s “That’s Entertainment!” interest group will attend Jesus Christ Superstar on Saturday, April 12th, 7:30 pm at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts (1501 5th Street, Coralville). This rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice is based loosely on the Gospels’ account of the last week of Jesus’ life as seen through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. Zach Grueskin, the son of UUSIC member Nancy Downing, will play the part of Jesus. Donations (food and monetary) for the Coralville Ecumenical Food Pantry will be gratefully received. Everyone is welcome! If you would like to attend, contact Carol Throckmorton at or 337-3030. Ticket prices are $17 for seniors and $22 for general admission. Sunday Services, Apr. 13 “America’s Climate Century,” Sen. Rob Hogg & the Green Sanctuary Committee, 9:30 & 11:15 am in the Sanctuary Senator Rob Hogg is an Iowa Senator from Cedar Rapids and author of the book America’s Climate Century. Senator Hogg is the vice chair of the Senate’s Environment and Energy Independence Committee and chair of the Rebuild Iowa Committee. He will speak about what climate change means for America in the 21st Century and what Americans can do about it. Campus Young Adults.
