We know that pursuing both successful sporting and academic goals can be difficult to balance. However, with the right support and encouragement we feel it is possible to successfully integrate the two; through enrolment flexibility, cross-institutional study options, providing guidance in negotiating with lecturers and in arranging alternative study options for representative travel commitments. To assist students in this balancing act, a considerable fund has been established by the UTS Union to provide support to high achievers in a wide range of sporting pursuits. The UTS Union Ltd has two programs to support athletes of UTS, the Elite and Emerging Athlete Programs, and endeavors to assist students in both their academic and sporting pursuits.

The UTS EAP strives to assist our athletes in their desire to combine high performance sport and a tertiary education. Over the years the program has provided Sports Scholarships to Olympians, World Champions and National Champions. In 2012, the program supported over 100 Elite and Emerging Athletes across 37 different sports, including 3 Olympians and 7 World University Championships representatives. Members of the program are able to take advantage of a wide range of benefits, which may include financial assistance, free Fitness Centre membership including consultation and programming, grants towards intervarsity sporting tournaments, assistance with academic matters and travel grants for international representation. The UTS Elite Athlete program, following the Elite Athlete Friendly University (EAFU) Network principle, has an overriding objective in assisting our student athletes in combining high performance sport and a tertiary education – if you are an elite athlete who wants to achieve your academic and sporting goals, then the UTS EAP is for you.
