Clay has been used to make sculptural and functional forms for probably longer than any other ‘art’ material. Its malleability makes it perfect to shape and its transformation through the processes of fire produces, almost magically, a material that has proven to have survived millennia. Despite this, clay is often viewed as a material of craft, not art. Even some of our most important public collections still discriminate on the basis of medium. Marea Gazzard was a staunch advocate that form was what determined the worth of any work, not the material. CLAY 3 attests to Marea’s philosophy as five individuals pursue their very different visions.
