Final Report February 3, 2015

Executive Summary Significant Events Change in Leadership: In January 2014, Dr. Vince Carilli began his tenure as Vice Chancellor for the Division of Student Life. The Department of Career Services continued to report directly to Dr. Melissa Shivers, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life and Dean of Students. External Review: In spring 2014, the department prepared for a program review scheduled by the Division every five years. The review team of six was led by Dr. Donna Ratcliffe (Virginia Tech) and Dr. Myrna Hoover (Florida State University) and included three UT staff members and one employer. After two days of interviewing Career Services constituents that included students, staff, faculty, employers and administration, the team defined departmental strengths and areas of growth or opportunity. A full report of findings and recommendations is available upon request. Software Migration: Hire-a-VOL is the system that powers online job postings, on-campus recruiting, event registration and data collection for Career Services. It is a vital tool for communicating with students and employers and for connecting those groups to each other. In May, the Experience Corporation unexpectedly filed bankruptcy and was subsequently assumed by another company. This forced Career Services to change software vendors to CSO Research. The timeframe of this transition was compressed due to the urgency of having a fully functioning system available for students and employers by July 1st. Staff Changes In June 2013, Justin Rice joined the staff as a STEM Consultant. This newly added position offered an opportunity to add a consultant to aid with the growing College of Engineering, as well as, offer more attention to students and employers in the hard sciences. Justin immediately made an impact in that area. Unfortunately, several staff members departed Career Services throughout the year, exclusively due to family reasons. Sarah Helm, Disability Careers Coordinator; Shawna Hembree, Assistant Director for the Center for Impact Careers; Elizabeth Enck, Consultant to Communication/Arts and Sciences; and Andrea Booher, Recruiting Coordinator, left between September and May. None of those positions were filled by the conclusion of the reporting year which led to some strain on remaining staff. First-Destination Data Collection An effort was made to follow more of the First-Destination Survey guidelines set forth by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). The time frame of data collection was extended to 6 months post-graduation. Consultants collected data on graduates through a number of means, including multiple emails, phone calls, information collected by academic departments and social media outlets, e.g., LinkedIn. Of graduating students, our overall “known percent is 40% ranging from a high known rate of 92% for the College of Engineering to a low of 16% for the College of Architecture and Design. This task remains one of the most challenging for Career Services and additional measures to improve data collection and follow all NACE guidelines are under progress in 2014-2015. Student Contact The Career Planning team and College Consultants conducted Over 3,600 individual student appointments. Students seen represented all years and colleges and topics covered, included major selection, part-time employment, internship 3

Final Report February 3, 2015 and job search preparation, graduate school admissions and other career development questions. Nearly 14,000 students participated in educational programming and classes offered by Career Services staff members, and 475 students enrolled in career development courses taught by staff. While this number does not represent unique users, it demonstrates the impact the department makes on campus. Staff reach students through a wide array of classroom presentations, workshops, organizational meetings, orientation sessions, tabling across campus and large scale events. The Peer Career Advisors also work with a large number of students through resume walk-in hours, mock interviews and after hours programming. Employer Contact Approximately 550 unique employers visited the University of Tennessee, Knoxville through events arranged by Career Services, including job fairs, on-campus recruiting and information sessions. 230 employers conducted 3,321 on-campus interviews. Employers posted thousands of positions, part-time, internship and full-time, in the Hire-a-Vol system. The office engaged employers in educational programs to assist students’ career development such as networking events, job fair preparation and resume critiques. A number of employers supported the department financially, formally through the Corporate Partners Program and informally through events like the Kick-Off Cook Out. Office Highlights       

All 60 sections of First Year Studies 101, approximately 1,200 students, visited Career Services in Fall 2013 making it one of the single largest outreach programs. Additionally, 19 sections and 450 first-year Business students attended Career Services presentations. What Can I Do With This Major? generated $56,000 in revenue from sales to over 500 colleges and universities. The two largest, campus-wide job fairs, The Fall Job Fair and The Spring Job and Internship Fair, experienced increased employer attendance of 20% and 11% respectively. Student attendance at the Part-time Job Fair increased by 76%. Networking at Neyland was offered once each semester after its Spring 2013 debut. This event provides an excellent opportunity for students and alumni to engage with each other. The University of Tennessee Career Services Dr. Jane S. Redmond and PepsiCo Commitment to Diversity Award was given to Enterprise Holding. Through the creation of a new appointment intake system (online scheduling of appointments) and with the addition of a Consultant focused on science majors, there was a 55 percent increase in College of Arts and Sciences individual appointments. Presentations on professionalism and transitioning into the world of work were created and presented to students in the College of Social Work and selected majors in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. These were created based on employer feedback and reached more than 250 students. All graduating seniors in the College of Social Work and the Child and Family Studies major completed a mock interview and resume review with Career Services staff (over 110 students). 100% of seniors in Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering and 100% of juniors in Civil Engineering conducted mock interviews and resume critiques with Career Services staff. Additionally, 100% of seniors in Industrial and Systems Engineering completed a resume critique. Career Services collaborated with many units in Academic Affairs and Student Life to increase career programming on campus and reach more students. Strong partnerships exist with Student Success Center, Chancellor’s Honors Program, EAP, New Student and Family Programs, First Year Studies, The Thornton Center, Alumni Affairs, to name a few.

*Reporting errors attributed to individuals reporting graduation data and not completing final graduation requirements. Reasons for inability to officially graduate range from fee payment, incomplete course work and incomplete graduation paperwork. **Graduation data is collected over multiple semesters. Higher reporting numbers than actual registered clients can be attributed to multiple graduate placement reports being completed. ***In some cases students who were not considered to be fully registered (registered = profile completed and resume uploaded) in the system reported placement data. This accounts for some negative numbers in the “Unknown column.

Career Planning Annual Report Summer 2013 – Spring 2014 Staff Our full-time career planning staff remained in place with Associate Director Stephanie Kit, Assistant Director Jenny Ward and Career Counselor Erin Harvey. In summer 2013, Graduate Assistant Justina Farley moved to the Counseling Center but was replaced with a returning GA, Allie Rhinehart. Allie and GA Tiffany Brooks are both doctoral students in the Counselor Education program. Appointment Statistics and Client Profile Hundreds of UT students received career counseling services either through individual appointments or group interpretations of the Strong Interest Inventory (SII). The client profile was typical for the career planning area: 82% were first or second-year students, and 56% were either Arts and Sciences or Exploratory. The Colleges of Business Administration and Education, Health and Human Sciences were the next most represented units. Individual appointments slightly decreased from last year (5%). The number of group SII interpretations decreased by 12%, partly due to programmatic changes across campus, e.g., UT Lead Summer Institute served 40 students instead of 80. Class and Group Programming Collaboration with First-Year Studies 101 is one of the largest outreach programs for the department. Approximately 1200 students in 60 classes visited the Career Exploration Center, primarily in the fall semester. Additionally, Arts and Sciences Advising and Career Services partnered to teach ten sections for exploratory students; each of these sections took the SII and returned to Career Services for a class interpretation during a second visit. Career planning staff provided dozens of workshops and presentations for hundreds of students, as well as coordinated departmental efforts for first-year and transfer orientations, admissions events and the Center for Leadership and Service. Due to a change in orientation schedules, the number of transfer students and their guests attending Career Services presentations more than doubled from the prior year. The second annual Sophomore Bootcamp served 80 students, up from 50 in 2013. Over the course of 2013-2014, career planning reached nearly 6,000 students and parents through classes, presentations, browse sessions and other events! New Technology In summer 2013, career planning added COMPASS by Woofound to its assessment offerings. This quick, visual personality assessment offers students the opportunity to receive instant feedback on personality as it relates to careers and majors. Over 800 students took the assessment in the first ten months of availability, and COMPASS was added to the pre-orientation site for new Vols in May. Revenue Generation Institutional subscriptions to What Can I Do With This Major? continued to generate a solid stream of revenue for the office, bringing in over $56,000. Most colleges and universities renewed their subscriptions, and many more initiated subscriptions throughout the year, bringing the total number of users to 530.

College Consultant Annual Report Summer 2013 – Spring 2014 Staff The College Consulting Team is made of seven full-time staff and two graduate teaching assistants. Summer 2013 welcomed Justin Rice, the first STEM Consultant. His position was added to meet the growing population in the College of Engineering and to offer an increased focus on finding opportunities in the hard sciences. Communication and Information/Arts and Sciences Consultant Elizabeth Enck left the University in December and was not replaced until mid-June. Several other staff members shared her responsibilities in the spring semester. The match between consultants and colleges is not perfect. Several consultants see students from more than one college due to the similarity of industries represented by those majors. For various reasons, students will also see alternative consultants from time to time. Following is the list of staff who serve in the consulting role and their primary areas of responsibility.         

Mary Mahoney: CASNR, Architecture and Design, Retail and Consumer Science, Sport Management, Hotel Restaurant and Tourism; saw Communication students after Enck departed. April Gonzalez: College of Engineering Justin Rice: STEM, select majors in COE, hard sciences and mathematics, nursing, students seeking prehealth information Danny Pape: College of Business Administration Jessica Geist: College of Business Administration Mark McKenzie: Graduate Teaching Assistant, College of Business Administration Mary Beth Browder: Select majors in Arts and Sciences, EHHS, Social Work Elizabeth Enck: Select majors in Arts and Sciences, Communication and Information (left in December) Kelsey Lavigne: Graduate Teaching Assistant, Arts and Sciences

Each consultant creates an individual report of activities, both appointments and group programming, that offers more details. These reports are presented to the appropriate colleges. This report serves as an aggregate of consulting activities throughout the year. Consultants also work with employers who want to hire students for internships and full-time jobs. This includes assisting with job postings on Hire-A-Vol, on-campus interviews and information sessions as well as communicating these opportunities to students. Individual Appointments Thousands of UT students met with their consultants one-on-one to discuss their career goals. Typical topics covered during appointments include: resume critiques, internship and job search strategies, practice interviews, salary negotiation and offer acceptance and graduate school admissions. Approximately 51% of total appointments were with seniors. Class and Group Programming In addition to individual appointments, the consultants are involved in a large number of group career development programming. This ranges from class presentations at the invitation of faculty to workshops offered by Career Services to special events. Commonly presented topics include: overview of Career Services, resume writing, interviewing skills, job search strategies, networking and business etiquette. Hallmark events include Networking at Neyland, dining etiquette dinners and Just in Time Job Fair preparation.

72

Final Report February 3, 2015 Credit-Bearing Classes Several of the consultants also teach classes for credit. These courses target juniors and seniors and offer job search and graduate school preparation.
