A TENNESSEE WIN WOULD...  Give Tennessee a four-game win streak.  Even the all-time series with UTEP at 1-1.  Give UT a 4-3 record in holiday tournaments under head coach Cuonzo Martin.  Give the Vols a 46-34 all-time record against the current members of Conference USA.

¢ Atlantis is located 800 miles from Knoxville. ¢ The Vols shared a chartered Boeing 737 jet to Paradise Island with the Xavier basketball team. ¢ When the lone previous meeting in this series took place, UTEP was known as Texas Western University. The Miners’ head coach was Don Haskins, who later guided Texas Western on its famous national championship run in 1966. ¢ Nolan Richardson, who went on to coach Arkansas to a national title in 1994, scored a gamehigh 20 points for UTEP in that contest, which the Miners won 77-57 on Dec. 28, 1962, in Knoxville. ¢ After landing on the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 earlier this month, senior Jordan McRae and junior Jarnell Stokes were named to the Naismith Trophy watch list last Thursday. ¢ Antonio Davis, father of Vols freshman A.J. Davis, played on four NCAA Tournament teams at UTEP and helped the Miners win 95 games from 1986- 90. Antonio played 13 seasons in the NBA. ¢ Reigning SEC Player of the Week Jordan McRae has led the Vols in scoring in all four games this season. Dating to last season, he has led the team in scoring in nine of UT’s last 12 games. ¢ Point guard Antonio Barton owns a “true shooting percentage” of .847, which leads all Division I players nationally. ¢ Tennessee is shooting .444 (24-of-54) from 3-point range through the season’s first four games. That ranks 19th nationally. ¢ Junior wing Josh Richardson has played 101 minutes this season and has yet to commit a single turnover (seven assists).

TENNESSEE STATE RECAP

¢ Tennessee won its third game in a row as the Vols dominated Tennessee State, 88-67, Friday at Thompson-Boling Arena. ¢ The Vols were led by Wooden Award Candidates Jordan McRae (25 pts) and Jarnell Stokes (16 pts, 8 rebs). It was McRae’s ninth career game with 25 points or more. ¢ Freshman Darius Thompson had the best game of his young career, totaling six points, seven assists and five steals in 24 minutes (one turnover). ¢ Tennessee led by as many as 29 points in the second half. ¢ Tennessee led 38-30 at halftime. UT shot 57 percent from the floor in the half. The Vols were judicious with the ball, as they did not commit a turnover for the game’s first 16:30. ¢ The Tigers hung with the Vols and got within seven points early in the second half, but Tennessee pulled away midway in the second half thanks to an 18-6 run. The Vols took a 63-44 lead on a McRae layup with 10:24 left in the game. ¢ Tennessee State remained winless at 0-6. The Tigers were led by Patrick Miller, who scored 20.

80

» That’s forward Jarnell Stokes’ shooting percentage from the freethrow line this season (16-of-20). He entered this season as a career 57 percent foul shooter.

5

» That’s how many wins Cuonzo Martin has as UT’s coach over coaches with a Division I national championship on their résumé (Donovan 3x, Calhoun, Calipari).

STOKES HAS 19 DOUBLE-DOUBLES

¢ Jarnell Stokes had 16 double-doubles last season — the most among SEC players. ¢ The junior has 19 double-doubles during his UT career (54 games). He has posted a twin bill in 35.0 percent of his college games. ¢ Stokes’ 16 double-doubles last year were the most by a Vol in a season since Bernard King had 22 in 1976-77.

VOLS HAVE NO PROBLEM LOGGING DOUBLE-DOUBLES ¢ Three players on the Tennessee roster collectively boast 30 career double-doubles. ¢ Jarnell Stokes is UT’s active career leader with 19 double-doubles to his credit. His 16 double-doubles last season rank tied for eighth on Tennessee’s single-season list. ¢ Redshirt senior Jeronne Maymon has 10 career double-doubles. ¢ Senior wing Jordan McRae has one career double-double. He totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds in last season’s win at Vanderbilt.

REBOUNDING RECORDS REVOLUTION

¢ Tennessee’s frontcourt tandem of Jeronne Maymon and Jarnell Stokes is rewriting Tennessee’s offensive rebounding records. ¢ Stokes averages 3.57 orpg during his career, while Maymon has a UT career average of 2.65 orpg. If their career averages improve or stand firm, they will rank first and second, respectively, on UT’s all-time list. Former Vol C.J. Black currently stands atop Tennessee’s career list with 2.47 orpg from 1996-2000. ¢ Since offensive rebounding statistics have been recorded (1996-97) there have been only two players in Tennessee history to grab 10 or more offensive boards in a single game. Stokes hauled in 12 last season vs. Mercer, and Maymon totaled 10 against Ole Miss in the 2012 SEC Tournament. ¢ Stokes averaged 4.18 orpg as a sophomore last season. That is the best single-season mark in program history.

McRAE NEARING 1,000-POINT CLUB

¢ Senior wing Jordan McRae needs just 85 points to become the 45th all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club. ¢ McRae scored a team-high 518 points last season, and he totaled 293 as UT’s sixth man in 2011-12. McRae appeared in only 10 games as a freshman in 2010-11, scoring 18 points.

McRAE COULD JOIN ELITE DUO

¢ One of the most versatile players in college basketball, Jordan McRae could finish his career with some versatile statistical totals that would put him in rare company. ¢ McRae entered his senior season well within reach of totaling 1,200 career points, 300 rebounds, 150 assists and 75 blocks. ¢ Only two Vols have ever reached those totals: the program’s all-time leader in win and games played, Wayne Chism, and 2002 NBA Draft pick Vincent Yarbrough. It should be noted that blocks were not recorded during the careers of Vol greats Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld.

MARTIN’S PROGRAM MANTRA: #TOUGHERBREED ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE ¢ The Tennessee basketball team’s performance in the classroom has improved dramatically since head coach Cuonzo Martin’s arrival on Rocky Top. There have been several noteworthy highlights. ¢ When the NCAA released its most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) data in June 2013, the basketball program’s multi-year score of 973 was its best ever. ¢ Martin has been at the helm for each of the program’s two best multi-year APR scores ever (961 in 2012, 973 in 2013). ¢ The program’s 2.63 team GPA for the Spring 2013 semester was its best since the data started being recorded in 2003. ¢ In Martin’s two years at Tennessee, every outgoing senior has received his degree. ¢ A total of 21 Tennessee men’s basketball players have graduated in the last five years. Those players are: Josh Bone, Quinn Cannington, Ryan Childress, Wayne Chism, John Fields, Melvin Goins, Kenny Hall, Tony Harris, Michael Hubert, Justin Jackson, Chris Lofton, Skylar McBee, Dwight Miller, Rob Murphy, Steven Pearl, J.P. Prince, Tyler Summitt, Cameron Tatum, C.J. Watson, Tanner Wild and Renaldo Woolridge. ¢ Of those 21 graduates in the last five years, 10 went on to sign professional basketball contracts and two have gone into coaching.

EMPHASIS OF THE DAY ¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.” ¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on basketball-specific skills or strategy, as Martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day. ¢ Martin typically begins by reading that day’s “emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words. ¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy Webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys. It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around `team.’ ¢ Added Webster: “If the guys are having a hard time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start. ¢ A few examples:  When someone does well, we all do well. When someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake. Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other.  When we are reliable, others know that they can depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.

Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin introduced a new program slogan this season: A Tougher Breed. “Toughness has got to be what we are as a program. That’s our brand, our way of life,” Martin said. So the Vols embody that “tougher breed” approach in all they do. Their workouts, which oftentimes begin long before sunrise. The standards to which coaches hold players and players hold each other. It can hardly be surprising that Tennessee also employs some boxing workouts from time to time, or that the Vols are embracing their lacing up the sneakers like a pugilist tying on gloves. They proudly wear T-shirts with orange boxing gloves that read “Let’s Rumble.” “That came from the coaching staff. We’ve done boxing workouts as a team. It just shows our toughness and our tenacity,” senior forward Jeronne Maymon explained. “How we get after things. Especially on the court, we’re always pushing and shoving each other and testing our brothers on the practice court. The sport of boxing is a good translation to what we do in practice and the weight room and other things in life. “It would be hard to find a tougher team in America than the University of Tennessee men’s basketball program. That’s what we hang our hat on. You’ve got to find something to hang your hat on, and we hang our hat on toughness.” Proof of said toughness is undeniable across Martin’s first two campaigns in Knoxville; his teams held foes to fewer than 65 points per game both seasons and also ranked second each year in the SEC in rebounding margin. “Coach Martin has a very steady personality. He doesn’t waver. You always know what you’re going to get, so I think that’s what really keeps us on balance,” said Maymon. “So if (coach’s) personality wavered and sometimes he was happy and sometimes he was sad and he made us do drills off his emotions, then we’d be unbalanced. But he’s very stable, and we know what we’re getting and what we’re getting into every day. So it’s pretty easy for us to adapt to his personality. Martin now knows without a doubt this Tennessee team wants to earn and desperately craves the opportunity to proclaim and wear that label of toughness. “The one thing about it, every guy wants to be considered tough; they like the results behind it on the floor but also the stuff we do in the weight room,” Martin said. “Guys love to have a level of toughness, like the shirts we’ve got with the boxing gloves and ’Let’s rumble.’ We enjoy that, we embrace that. We want to be as tough as we can be on the basketball floor and as nice as we can be off the basketball floor.”

“Toughness has got to be what we are as a program. That’s our brand, our way of life.” — Cuonzo Martin

VOLS IN THE NBA ¢ Former Vol Tobias Harris (2011) was traded from Milwaukee to Orlando in February. As a starter for the Magic last year, he averaged 17.3 points and 8.5 rebounds in 36 minutes per game.

¢ Veteran NBA point guard C.J. Watson (2003-06) enters his seveth NBA season with a new team: the Indiana Pacers. Through his first six seasons, Watson averaged 7.6 points and 2.5 assists per game.

¢ Vol legends Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) and Allan Houston (1990-93) each hold NBA front-office titles. Grunfeld is in his 11th year as president of the Wizards, and Houston is the assistant general manager of the New York Knicks.

QUICK DEFENSIVE NOTES

¢ UT's opponents suffered through six scoreless droughts of at least six minutes last season (Vanderbilt 6:47, Virginia 6:41, Georgetown 6:23, Kennesaw State 6:20, Oakland 6:10, Xavier 6:01). ¢ The Vols held No. 8 Florida to 58 points on Feb. 26. That tied for the Gators' lowest point total of the season. UT also limited the high-powered Florida offense to 26 second-half points and just four made 3-pointers in the game. ¢ Tennessee held No. 23 Ole Miss (who, at the time, ranked third nationally in scoring with 82.4 ppg) without a field goal for a span of 9:59 Jan. 24 in Oxford. ¢ Tennessee held Alabama without a field goal for a span of 7:38 in the Tide's home gym on Jan. 12. ¢ The Vols held Xavier without a field goal for a span of 10:16 during the second half of UT's win. ¢ The 19 turnovers UT forced vs. Xavier were the most forced by the Vols during the Martin era. ¢ Tennessee held 20th-ranked Georgetown without a field goal for the final 10:17 of the first half on Nov. 30. The Hoyas also were held scoreless for the final 4:09 of regulation.

SACRIFICING THE BODY FOR THE TEAM

¢ As a team, Tennessee took 52 charges last year (1.6 per game). ¢ 11 different Vols drew charges last season. ¢ This season, Tennessee has drawn just one charge through three games. Given the changes in how officials are instructed to make the block/ charge call, this decline was to be expected.

TIME’S UP!

¢ Tennessee has forced one 5-second call this season (at Xavier). ¢ The Vols have forced one shot-clock violation thus far (vs. The Citadel). ¢ Tennessee’s half-court defense caused 11 shotclock violations last season.

BACKCOURT BLOCK PARTY

¢ The players on Tennessee’s roster combine to boast 227 blocks. ¢ Interestingly, more than 66 percent of those blocks (150 of 227) are by guards. ¢ The Vols’ backcourt blocks leaders are senior Jordan McRae and junior Josh Richardson, who own 65 and 45 career blocks, respectively. ¢ Tennessee’s guards accounted for 55.4 percent of the team’s blocked shots last year (72 of 130).

ACTIVE HANDS

¢ The Vols track the number of pass deflections they record every game. They average 13.3 deflections per game this season. ¢ Tennessee has had at least 10 deflections in all but one of its games this season. ¢ Those who attend a Tennessee basketball game in person are sure to hear Cuonzo Martin’s repetitive yell of, “Haaands!” whenever the Vols are on defense.

MARTIN HAS HISTORY WITH DEFENSIVE STOPPERS

¢ During Cuonzo Martin’s assistant/associate head coaching tenure at Purdue from 2000-08, the Boilermakers produced three Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honorees. ¢ Guard Kenneth Lowe won the award in both 2003 and 2004, and guard Chris Kramer captured the honor in 2008. ¢ And in 2011, which was Martin’s third and final season as head coach at Missouri State, he coached Jermaine Mallett to a spot on the MVC All-Defense Team.

DE-FENSE! DE-FENSE!

VOLS HELD FOUR STRAIGHT UNDER 60

¢ From Nov. 26 through Dec. 13, 2012, Tennessee held four straight opponents to 60 points or less, tying for the program’s longest such streak in the shot-clock era. ¢ The Vols’ streak came against: Oakland (50), No. 20 Georgetown (37), Virginia (46) and No. 23 Wichita State (60). UT went 2-2 during that stretch, while its opponents averaged 48.3 ppg. ¢ In 1995-96, UT went 3-1 during a similar fourgame streak, and the Big Orange also put together a four-game streak in 1985-86 while going 4-0. ¢ Tennessee held 13 teams to fewer than 60 points last season, including eight SEC foes.

TENNESSEE KEEPS IT UNDER 70

¢ No opponent has scored more than 67 points against the Vols this season. ¢ The Volunteers have held 27 of their last 38 opponents to fewer than 70 points, dating to last season. ¢ Last season, only Ole Miss (92 in Knoxville), Memphis (85), Kentucky (75 in Lexington), Arkansas (73), LSU (72), Texas A&M (85 in 4OTs), Georgia (78 in Athens), Auburn (75) and Mercer (75) reached the 70-point mark. ¢ Tennessee’s streak of holding 11 straight opponents to fewer than 70 points (first 11 games of last season) was the program’s longest such streak since the 1995-96 Volunteers held 16 straight foes to 68 or less. ¢ Until Memphis broke the 70-point barrier on Jan. 4, 2013, Tennessee had a streak of 32 straight regular-season games in which no opponent scored more than 70 points.

STARTING STRONG

¢ In 36 of the 71 games UT has played under head coach Cuonzo Martin, the Vols have held teams the opponent to fewer than 30 first-half points.

$40 MILLION COMMITMENT Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top

The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign. Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena. The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities. The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room. The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs. And new to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.

It’s so much MORE than just winning ballgames. “Eventually this ball will stop bouncing. So I’ve got to help you find your way in life. And I want you to walk with your head held high and your chest out because you’re a man.” - Cuonzo Martin DEVELOPING WELL-ROUNDED YOUNG MEN

¢ Cuonzo Martin is genuinely just as passionate about the development of his players off the court as he is about their athletic development. As such, he brings in speakers and presenters to conduct year-round seminars that educate the team on topics that will benefit them later in life. ¢ Guest speakers and team seminars have focused on topics such as “Dressing for Success,” AIDS awareness, credit score education, how to keep a budget, balance a checkbook and more. ¢ Director of Basketball Operations Marco Harris oversees the team’s community outreach efforts. The team has visited patients at UT Medical Center and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and also has assisted with Habitat for Humanity building projects (2011 and 2012), Race for the Cure and several other events.

PERSONAL BRANDING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

¢ Rather than banning his players from using various social media services, Cuonzo Martin believes in educating them on how to effectively use social media as a positive personal branding tool. ¢ In the summer of 2012, a national Yahoo! Sports article touted Tennessee basketball as a program that takes a “more progressive approach to social media than its peers.”

MEN’S HOOPS HAS WON FOUR OF UT’s LAST SEVEN COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS

¢ The Tennessee men’s basketball team has won four of the last seven Men’s Community Service Team of the Year Awards, presented annually at the “Volscars” ceremony. ¢ The Volscars (wordplay on “Oscars”) is UT’s annual year-end athletic awards show.
