The Tennessee softball team didn't have as much wiggle room as it's used to this season, but the only room they needed was Raven Chavanne's spot on the box score Friday night. Chavanne went 3-for-3 and scored all three runs to lead Tennessee to a 3-1 win over Louisiana Monroe at Lee Softball Stadium in the Lady Vols' first game of the Tennessee Classic. "Just went in with a different mindset (from Thursday)," Chavanne said. "I just kind of closed everything out, focused on what I know how to do." "I've said on the record that I think Raven's the best leadoff hitter I've ever coached," said UT co-head coach Ralph Weekly. "The thing about Raven is as she goes, we go." No. 8 Tennessee (16-2) held Louisiana Monroe (10-9) to two hits. The rest of UT's lineup, which Weekly shuffled throughout the night, had six hits. Freshmen Melissa Davin and Kourtny Thomas got their first starts of the season. "I think missing (Madison) Shipman and (Jessica) Spigner in the batting order is tough for us because they do it four and five when we're at regular strength," said Weekly. Shipman saw limited action with an injury to her left hand. Spigner is out for the weekend for violating team rules. Kelly Grieve was 2-for-2 and Lauren Gibson hit 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Freshman Ellen Renfroe (9-1) logged her second win in as many days, giving up two hits, a walk and an earned run. After giving up a lead-off home run to Brianna Love in the first inning, Renfroe retired 12 of 14 batters. "I try not to let those things like that rattle me, especially early in the game," said Renfroe. "You can't go back and fix what happened in the past." The Lady Vols had a chance to grab a significant edge in the first inning. But with the bases loaded and one out, Chelsea O'Connor hit into a double play to keep the game tied at 1-1.
