¢ The 2013-14 season marks the 35th anniversary of Tennessee’s last SEC Tournament championship. Head coach Don DeVoe led the Vols to wins over Auburn and then Kentucky in Birmingham, Ala., in March 1979. ¢ Jan. 21, 2014, is the 25th anniversary of the largest home crowd in Tennessee basketball history. On Jan. 21, 1989, a record crowd of 25,610 packed Thompson-Boling Arena to see the Vols host rival Kentucky (the Wildcats won, 66-65). ¢ This season also marks the 10th anniversary of Scooter McFadgon setting a school record for single-season free-throw percentage, as he shot .912 (134 of 147) from the stripe in 2003-04. ¢ 20 years ago, LaMarcus Golden set the school record for steals per game (2.88 in 1993-94).

FRESH FACES AT POINT GUARD

¢ Tennessee has two true point guards on scholarship, and neither has suited up for the Big Orange prior to this season. ¢ Senior transfer Antonio Barton spent the previous three years sharing time at the point guard spot at Memphis. He has averaged more than 21 minutes per game during his college career. A native of Baltimore, Md., Barton is a .417 career shooter from 3-point range. ¢ True freshman Darius Thompson was a prep standout at Blackman High School in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Gatorade State Player of the Year finalist also was a McDonald’s All-American Nominee.

MAYMON IS BACK!

¢ After redshirting all of last season due to a knee injury, All-SEC forward Jeronne Maymon returns to action this season. ¢ Tennessee’s team MVP in 2011-12, Maymon led the Vols in scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg) in SEC play as a junior. ¢ He scored at least 12 points in every SEC game and also led the league in free-throw attempts during the regular season (184). ¢ Maymon’s absence last season allowed teams to double-team power forward Jarnell Stokes.

STOKES EARNS BACK-TO-BACK GOLDS IN FIBA INTERNATIONAL PLAY ¢ Junior power forward Jarnell Stokes has led a USA Basketball national team to a FIBA gold medal in international competition each of the last two summers. ¢ In the summer of 2013, Stokes was a starter on the USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team, which went 9-0 en route to the gold medal at the FIBA U19 World Championship in Prague, Czech Republic. ¢ In the summer of 2012, Stokes starred for the USA Basketball Men’s U18 National Team, which captured gold medal at FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil. ¢ Stokes joins former All-Americans and NBA standouts Ernie Grunfeld and Allan Houston as the only Vols ever to win multiple gold medals in sanctioned international competition.

STOKES LONE “MAJOR” PLAYER TO AVG. DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN LEAGUE PLAY ¢ Junior power forward Jarnell Stokes is the only returning “major” conference player in America who averaged a double-double in league play last season. ¢ 2012-13 Double-Double Average (League Games Only)

STOKES HAS 18 DOUBLE-DOUBLES

¢ Jarnell Stokes had 16 double-doubles last season — the most among SEC players. ¢ The junior has 18 double-doubles during his UT career (50 games). He has posted a twin bill in 36.0 percent of his college games. ¢ Stokes’ 16 double-doubles were the most by a Vol in a season since Bernard King had 22 in 1976-77.

STOKES A PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN

¢ Jarnell Stokes was named to the 22-man Lute Olson Preseason All-America Team, announced Oct. 9 by CollegeInsider.com.

VOLS HAVE NO PROBLEM LOGGING DOUBLE-DOUBLES ¢ Three returners on the Tennessee roster collectively boast 28 career double-doubles entering this season. ¢ Jarnell Stokes is UT’s active career leader with 18 double-doubles to his credit. His 16 double-doubles last season rank tied for eighth on Tennessee’s single-season list. ¢ Redshirt senior Jeronne Maymon has nine career double-doubles and is one away from becoming the 30th Vol ever to record at least 10 in his career. ¢ Senior wing Jordan McRae has one career double-double. He totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds in last season’s win at Vanderbilt.

REBOUNDING RECORDS REVOLUTION

¢ Tennessee’s frontcourt tandem of Jeronne Maymon and Jarnell Stokes is rewriting Tennessee’s offensive rebounding records. ¢ Stokes enters this season averaging 3.64 orpg during his career, while Maymon has a UT career average of 2.51 orpg. If their career averages improve or stand firm, they would rank first and second, respectively, on UT’s all-time list. Former Vol C.J. Black currently stands atop Tennessee’s career list with 2.47 orpg from 1996-2000. ¢ Since offensive rebounding statistics have been recorded (1996-97) there have been only two players in Tennessee history to grab 10 or more offensive boards in a single game. Stokes hauled in 12 last season vs. Mercer, and Maymon totaled 10 against Ole Miss in the 2012 SEC Tournament. ¢ Stokes averaged 4.18 orpg as a sophomore last season. That is the best single-season mark in program history.

McRAE NEARING 1,000-POINT CLUB

¢ Senior wing Jordan McRae enters his final season on Rocky Top needing just 171 points to become the 45th all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club. ¢ McRae scored a team-high 518 points last season, and he totaled 293 as UT’s sixth man in 2011-12. McRae appeared in only 10 games as a freshman in 2010-11, scoring 18 points.

McRAE COULD JOIN ELITE DUO

¢ One of the most versatile players in college basketball, Jordan McRae could finish his career with some versatile statistical totals that would put him in rare company. ¢ McRae enters his senior season well within reach of totaling 1,200 career points, 300 rebounds, 150 assists and 75 blocks. ¢ Only two Vols have ever reached those totals: the program’s all-time leader in win and games played, Wayne Chism, and 2002 NBA Draft pick Vincent Yarbrough. It should be noted that blocks were not recorded during the careers of Vol greats Bernard King and Ernie Grunfeld.

McRAE UP FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD ¢ Jordan McRae is one of 30 candidates for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award for men’s college basketball. ¢ To be eligible, one must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition. ¢ CLASS is an acronym for “Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School.”

MARTIN HAS RUN THE GAUNTLET

¢ In two full seasons with the Vols, head coach Cuonzo Martin has guided UT to at least one victory over every opposing SEC team. ¢ Only one other league team, Kentucky, has beaten every SEC opponent during that span. ¢ He’s also posted triumphs over the defending national champs for two straight years (UConn in 2012, Kentucky in 2013).

MARTIN RACKING UP RANKED WINS

¢ Cuonzo Martin became just the third coach in UT history to defeat at least three teams ranked in the AP top 25 in each of his first two seasons with the Vols (Jerry Green and Bruce Pearl).

@CuonzoMartin on Twitter

¢ Vols head coach Cuonzo Martin is very active on Twitter, @CuonzoMartin. ¢ Martin’s 38,300 followers rank him sixth among all Division I hoops coaches.

MARTIN ALWAYS POISED

¢ In 169 games as a college head coach, Cuonzo Martin has never been whistled for a technical foul.

J-RICH MAKING STEADY STRIDES

¢ After averaging 2.9 points per game as a true freshman in 2011-12 guard Josh Richardson averaged 7.9 ppg last season while starting all 33 games for the Vols. ¢ Richardson looks to boost his production yet again this year, and coach Cuonzo Martin has spoken highly of the junior’s improved accuracy from 3-point range during the summer and preseason.

VOLS DISH THE ROCK

¢ The 11 players on Tennessee’s roster who own previous Division I experience combine to boast 478 assists. ¢ Senior guards Jordan McRae and Antonio Barton give the Vols a pair of players who own more than 100 career assists, as McRae has 118 and Barton has 142 (all as a Memphis Tiger). ¢ The last Tennessee team to enter a season with multiple 100-assist players was the 2009-10 squad, which reached the NCAA Elite Eight. That team entered the season with four 100-assist men: Wayne Chism (115), Bobby Maze (155), J.P. Prince (200) and Tyler Smith (347).

BACKCOURT BLOCK PARTY

¢ The 11 players on Tennessee’s roster who own previous Division I experience combine to boast 206 blocks. ¢ Interestingly, more than 65 percent of those blocks (135 of 206) are by guards. ¢ The Vols’ backcourt blocks leaders are senior Jordan McRae and junior Josh Richardson, who own 59 and 42 career blocks, respectively.

„ IN-SEASON HONORS

HALFTIME LEAD BODES WELL FOR UT

¢ Under second-year head coach Cuonzo Martin, Tennessee is 28-6 (.824) in games it led at halftime.

THREE VOLS ON PACE TO EARN DEGREES THIS ACADEMIC YEAR

¢ Senior guard D’Montre Edwards will graduate this summer with his degree in Journalism & Electronic Media. ¢ Senior guard Jordan McRae is on track to graduate in May with his degree in Sociology/ Criminal Justice. ¢ Senior forward Jeronne Maymon also will graduate in May with his degree in Psychology.

80 = TIPPING POINT

¢ In five seasons as a head coach, Cuonzo Martin’s teams are 18-3 when they score at least 80 points. That’s not surprising given the emphasis Martin places on unrelenting defense.

VOLS TO RETIRE DALE ELLIS’ NO. 14 ¢ Former Tennessee and NBA standout Dale Ellis will become the fourth UT men’s basketball player to have his jersey retired when the program hangs his No. 14 from the Thompson-Boling Arena rafters prior to the home game against Vanderbilt March 1, 2014. ¢ A native of Marietta, Ga., and two-time AllAmerican, Ellis suited up for the Vols and head coach Don DeVoe from 1979-83. ¢ Ellis was twice named the SEC Player of the Year (1982 and 1983), and he was a three-time first-team All-SEC selection. ¢ As a junior in 1981-82, he led Tennessee to a 2010 (13-5 SEC) record and the regular-season SEC Championship. ¢ Close to two decades worth of NBA stardom highlighted Ellis’ outstanding professional basketball playing career after he left Rocky Top. He was picked by the Dallas Mavericks with the ninth overall selection in the 1983 NBA Draft, and he went on to play 19 seasons in the NBA for six different teams.

“It says a lot about a program that takes on its coach’s mindset, especially the mindset of coach Martin. He’s all about toughness and heart and being dedicated to your craft. So that’s what we try to do; we try to just buy into everything he’s preaching and just go for it all.” - Jeronne Maymon

TURNING A PROFIT ¢ Men’s basketball is one of two sports at the University of Tenessee that turns a profit annually (football is the other). ¢ In March of 2013, the Tennessee men’s basketball program was once again included on Forbes.com’s list of the 20 “most valuable” college basketball programs in the country (No. 14). ¢ The figures showed UT hoops with a value of $15.5 million and a profit of $8.8 million in 2011-12. ¢ Tennessee also made that same Forbes’ Top20 list in 2011 and 2012.

VOL IN THE HALL ¢ In September of 2013, Tennessee legend Bernard King was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Mass. ¢ King, who played three seasons (1975-77) for head coach Ray Mears at Tennessee, is the first UT men’s basketball player to be enshrined. ¢ At 6-7, 205 pounds, King was a three-time firstteam All-American, earning consensus All-American acclaim as a junior in 1976-77. He also was a three-time SEC Player of the Year. ¢ In 76 career games played, King logged a school-record 62 double-doubles and remains the only Vol to average a double-double during his career (25.8 points and 13.2 rebounds) with at least 20.0 points per game. ¢ With King leading the way, Tennessee captured the 1977 SEC Championship with a 16-2 record in league play and a 22-6 mark overall. ¢ King played 14 seasons in the NBA and totaled 19,655 points in 874 games played, giving him a career NBA scoring average of 22.5 points.

UP NEXT: XAVIER

¢ Tennessee opens the regular season Tuesday at Xavier (9 p.m. ET, Fox Sports 1). ¢ This is the first time the Vols open regularseason play on the road since the 2004-05 opener against Stanford at the Maui Invitational. Tennessee won that clash 69-57 (Nov. 22, 2004). ¢ Tennesssee leads the all-time series with Xavier 11-4, dating to 1936. The Vols have a four-game win streak in the series, including a 51-47 victory in Knoxville last season (Dec. 29, 2012).

MARTIN’S PROGRAM MANTRA: #TOUGHERBREED ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE ¢ The Tennessee basketball team’s performance in the classroom has improved dramatically since head coach Cuonzo Martin’s arrival on Rocky Top. There have been several noteworthy highlights. ¢ When the NCAA released its most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) data in June 2013, the basketball program’s multi-year score of 973 was its best ever. ¢ Martin has been at the helm for each of the program’s two best multi-year APR scores ever (961 in 2012, 973 in 2013). ¢ The program’s 2.63 team GPA for the Spring 2013 semester was its best since the data started being recorded in 2003. ¢ In Martin’s two years at Tennessee, every outgoing senior has received his degree. ¢ A total of 21 Tennessee men’s basketball players have graduated in the last five years. Those players are: Josh Bone, Quinn Cannington, Ryan Childress, Wayne Chism, John Fields, Melvin Goins, Kenny Hall, Tony Harris, Michael Hubert, Justin Jackson, Chris Lofton, Skylar McBee, Dwight Miller, Rob Murphy, Steven Pearl, J.P. Prince, Tyler Summitt, Cameron Tatum, C.J. Watson, Tanner Wild and Renaldo Woolridge. ¢ Of those 21 graduates in the last five years, 10 went on to sign professional basketball contracts and two have gone into coaching.

EMPHASIS OF THE DAY ¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.” ¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on basketball-specific skills or strategy, as Martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day. ¢ Martin typically begins by reading that day’s “emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words. ¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy Webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys. It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around `team.’ ¢ Added Webster: “If the guys are having a hard time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start. ¢ A few examples:  When someone does well, we all do well. When someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake. Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other.  When we are reliable, others know that they can depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.

Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin introduced a new program slogan this season: A Tougher Breed. “Toughness has got to be what we are as a program. That’s our brand, our way of life,” Martin said. So the Vols embody that “tougher breed” approach in all they do. Their workouts, which oftentimes begin long before sunrise. The standards to which coaches hold players and players hold each other. It can hardly be surprising that Tennessee also employs some boxing workouts from time to time, or that the Vols are embracing their lacing up the sneakers like a pugilist tying on gloves. They proudly wear T-shirts with orange boxing gloves that read “Let’s Rumble.” “That came from the coaching staff. We’ve done boxing workouts as a team. It just shows our toughness and our tenacity,” senior forward Jeronne Maymon explained. “How we get after things. Especially on the court, we’re always pushing and shoving each other and testing our brothers on the practice court. The sport of boxing is a good translation to what we do in practice and the weight room and other things in life. “It would be hard to find a tougher team in America than the University of Tennessee men’s basketball program. That’s what we hang our hat on. You’ve got to find something to hang your hat on, and we hang our hat on toughness.” Proof of said toughness is undeniable across Martin’s first two campaigns in Knoxville; his teams held foes to fewer than 65 points per game both seasons and also ranked second each year in the SEC in rebounding margin. “Coach Martin has a very steady personality. He doesn’t waver. You always know what you’re going to get, so I think that’s what really keeps us on balance,” said Maymon. “So if (coach’s) personality wavered and sometimes he was happy and sometimes he was sad and he made us do drills off his emotions, then we’d be unbalanced. But he’s very stable, and we know what we’re getting and what we’re getting into every day. So it’s pretty easy for us to adapt to his personality. Martin now knows without a doubt this Tennessee team wants to earn and desperately craves the opportunity to proclaim and wear that label of toughness. “The one thing about it, every guy wants to be considered tough; they like the results behind it on the floor but also the stuff we do in the weight room,” Martin said. “Guys love to have a level of toughness, like the shirts we’ve got with the boxing gloves and ’Let’s rumble.’ We enjoy that, we embrace that. We want to be as tough as we can be on the basketball floor and as nice as we can be off the basketball floor.”

“Toughness has got to be what we are as a program. That’s our brand, our way of life.” — Cuonzo Martin

VOLS IN THE NBA ¢ Former Vol Tobias Harris (2011) was traded from Milwaukee to Orlando in February. As a starter for the Magic last year, he averaged 17.3 points and 8.5 rebounds in 36 minutes per game.

¢ Veteran NBA point guard C.J. Watson (2003-06) enters his seveth NBA season with a new team: the Indiana Pacers. Through his first six seasons, Watson averaged 7.6 points and 2.5 assists per game.

¢ Vol legends Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) and Allan Houston (1990-93) each hold NBA front-office titles. Grunfeld is in his 11th year as president of the Wizards, and Houston is the assistant general manager of the New York Knicks.
