MISSION STATEMENT The mission of the Physical Plant department is to construct, enhance and maintain the physical environment of The University of Southern Mississippi in a manner that is conducive to the education, research, service and safety of our community.

Foreward Thank you for taking time to review our FY 2018 annual report. Looking back over the past year, it is exciting to see the continued improvements our dedicated staff provided to the educational, residential and athletic facilities and grounds of our campus. While this year was extremely difficult as a result of mid-year budget cuts that materialized in the loss of 10 permanent positions to our department, I am proud of the resolve our team employed to continue to improve the campus of Southern Miss.

Our Physical Plant department recognizes the impact we make on the recruitment, retention and graduation of our students. We embrace the challenges and demands that come with the territory of continuing to exceed the expectations of our students, faculty, staff and visitors. I believe that as you peruse our annual report, you too will be excited about the evolution of our campus, its facilities and our grounds.

BOWER ATHLETIC CENTER/ COOK LIBRARY RENOVATIONS

Sustainability News The Office of Sustainability is a division of the Physical Plant that strives to develop and implement ideas and programs that influence awareness and concern for sustainable efforts, while reducing the university’s carbon footprint. Throughout the year, the department operates recycling programming, such as Move-in Day, game day recycling, Move-out Madness, and daily pickup across campus. This year these efforts have diverted a total of 546,427 pounds of materials away from the landfill and into the recycling stream. Comprised of two full-time team members and several student employees, the department was also responsible for transporting recyclable materials from the Gulf Park campus.

Earth Week events are always a highlight of the department’s accomplishments each year, and 2018 did not disappoint. The week of activities kicked off with the “Trees for the Earth Lecture” by Dr. Malcolm Guidry, a renowned certified arborist, who educated attendees on how trees and the Earth are connected. Earth Poetry Open Mic Night followed on Tuesday at a local restaurant, where students and other patrons gathered to read environmentally themed work. The mid-week activity was the Earth Fair, which featured 23 organizations in Shoemaker Square sharing environmental messages and sustainable ideas. The second annual Trashion Fashion Show took place on Thursday at the Intermezzo Plaza, between Marsh Hall and the Mannoni Performing Arts Center. Students had a chance to showcase their garments made from recyclable material for a chance to win a $100 gift card. The week ended with a field trip to Fulmer’s Farmstead General Store, where participants experienced blacksmithing, Alpaca weaving, and a wooden stove cooking class.

Energy Management Update The University of Southern Mississippi, under the leadership of President Rodney D. Bennett, continues to be committed to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC), which was signed in 2008 to reduce campus greenhouse gases. At the end of fiscal year 2016, Southern Miss along with other IHL member institutions completed a 10-year energy reduction initiative, which began in 2006 with a goal of 30%. As of June 30, 2016, Southern Miss had reduced energy consumption by 31% and realized a cumulative cost avoidance of $16,506,140 for electric and gas usage.

ENERGY FY18 energy use per gross square foot (GSF) increased 1.1% from FY17. FY18 campus energy costs per GSF saw a slight increase of 0.2% from the previous year. The colder winter caused an increase in natural gas usage offsetting electrical savings. , WATER FY18 water usage index decreased 7.2% from the previous year, resulting in 9.1% GSF cost reduction from the previous year.

HIGHLIGHTS

Reduced peak demand billing requirement in FY18. Peak demand billing was reduced from 14,632 kVA (FY17) to 13,828 (FY18), the lowest since FY14 and second lowest since FY05.

n

Achieved lowest monthly peak electrical demand since FY05. Peak demand in January 2018 was 9,121 kVA. The next lowest recorded demand was 10,207 kVA February 2018.

n

Overall campus water use reduced 43% from FY09 to current FY16.

n

FY17 began the new IHL goal of achieving a 6% reduction in the next 10 years.

Kudos Recently, I was having problems with my air conditioner in my office after relocating to Jones Hall, Room 209. I wanted to let you know how accommodating and helpful Van Walters has been. His customer service and professionalism is outstanding. I appreciate his helpfulness and attention in getting my air working properly.

We have the best Physical Plant anywhere!

Whenever I need anything at all, the staff is always there to help! Thank you for everything you do!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for making it so pretty outside of our building. It makes coming to work wonderful, especially now that it doesn’t mean walking through muddy/ sandy run off on rainy days. This is especially helpful for the families that come to us on the fourth floor to participate in the various programs involved with the Institute for Disability Studies. It is so beautiful out there now and it feels so good to see. I don’t know who is responsible for the change but I’d love to hug them for it! Thank you so much.

I have worked with several areas of the Physical Plant this past year and have been very happy with the quality of work and response time.

The custodial staff at the Trent Lott Center is the best.Very satisfied does not seem adequate to describe the level of service that we get.

The newly placed sod in front of Hillcrest Hall looks really nice.

Kudos to the grounds crew who works hard in this heat.

I would just like to let you know that Mike and Van were absolutely fantastic to work with! They hung in with Joshua from Acoustic Distinctions until 11 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and were always helpful, professional and extremely patient. I cound not have asked for anything more!
