The annual club BBQ and Drive-In Movie at the Lepore back yard in Stoughton missed the fast moving Saturday afternoon thunderstorms that swept through to help break the 7 day heat wave. Queen Ann Catering, who will be supplying the food at our August 17 Car Show, supplied the grilled chicken, ribs, burgers, hot dogs while club members provided pot luck appetizers, side dishes and desserts.

Live entertainment by Tom & Bob’s Oldies Show provided vocals to Karaoke style entertainment throughout the BBQ until dark when it was time for the Drive-In movie, “Eddie & The Cruisers”. Two problems, the digital projector decided to only provide sound with no pictures and the heavy afternoon rains washed away all the mosquito repellent that Bob Lepore had sprayed around the yard and woods. The mosquitos came out in full force and turned our dancing to the oldies into a slap fest and the movie was called off due to the projector glitch until next year.

Bass Pro Shops Associate Melissa Kent apparently likes pickup trucks more than cars as was evident when she fell in love with Wayne Woodward’s mildly customized 1955 Meadow Mist Ford F100 by selecting it for the cruiser of the night award sponsored by Accurate Automotive & Performance of Hyde Park, Boston. The Meadow Mist green color is an original Ford 100 color for 1956 and it’s non-standard 302 V8 small block Windsor engine was left stock, but Wayne, who hails from Wrentham, also wanted a cool looking driver so he had John Persson at The Old Car Shop make the transformation. John completed the truck’s transformation three years ago. It has a later model heavy duty C6 automatic transmission with a Torino 8 inch rear end. A Mustang II front end was grafted onto it and mono leaf rear springs were used in the rear. It also has a finished oak wood bed trimmed with polished stainless steel strips.

Two days after the truck was finished, Wayne drove her down to the F100 Supernationals & All Ford Show in Pigeon Forge Tennessee and he hasn’t stopped driving it to long distance events like the Woodward Dream Cruise, a testament that sharp looking trucks should be enjoyed by driving them and don’t have to be trailered.

The 1955 Ford F100 was the second F Series that was introduced in 1953. Although the F100 series, which followed the earlier F1 series ran until 1956, 1955 was the last year for the angled windshield with sloped pillars and 1956 introduced the wrap around windshield with vertical pillars, a small detail than can be easily missed when trying to distinguish different years of these popular Ford trucks.

July 25th Cruise Night Winner Yes it was raining and the cars came despite no D.J. or Uncle Buck’s burgers & dogs. So, we had a cruise winner.

Paul Melanson had just returned from the 13th Annual Atlantic Nationals in Moncton, New Brunswick the week before driving his 1958 Pontiac Chieftain the 550 miles so he wasn’t going to let rain showers keep him from driving over to Foxboro from his Newton home.

Paul definitely deserved the cruiser of the night award. Paul loves 1958 Pontiacs, having had one in high school. He was looking for one for a long time when this one from California came onto his radar screen in 2006 so he bought it. All that has been done to this original since then was give it new Seaforth & Darby green paint and give the 370 cu. In. V8 a much needed valve job. Other than that, it’s original.

He likes the ’58 Pontiacs so much he wants to bring his latest acquisition, a 1958 Super Star Chief four door sedan to the cruise.

When the annual July 4th weekend Worcester Summer Nationals moved to Thompson Speedway in Connecticut, many of the local Worcester area car enthusiasts and businesses didn’t want to see their beautiful Green Hill Park venue lose hosting the traditional holiday weekend car show. To keep the tradition going they formed the Cars of Summer Car Club in 2013 with the goal of producing a car show with class and style. The core group that went to work planning and organizing this year’s four day July 4 –7 car show was Gary Cooper (not the reinCARnated Hollywood icon), Marissa Brown, Austin Beliveau, Roger Steele, David Smaltz, Stan Carpenter, Frank Vescere and Kyle Lyman along with a lot of other volunteers and sponsors. I signed up for a four day pass, but only went to the opening Thursday and closing Sunday shows, primarily because of the unbearable heat we’ve been experience this July.

The travel pattern at Green Hill park is still the same as in the past but there were signs on the drive warning NO open headers and NO burnouts. Registration is at the park and not downtown at a host hotel, but the parking and vendor locations are the same. The Thursday show on the 4th saw over 600 cars show up and by Sunday the count was up over 900 registered vehicles for this inaugural event. It was enough to be declared a successful first time event turnout so they are already planning to be back next year. The show organizers were also receptive to suggestions for improvements and listened to any complaints that were made so it should evolve to be a very good family friendly type of car show.

Gone are the days when over 4,000 street rods would be searching for an open spot to park on the big hill and there is no smoke rising from the burnout pit on the hill’s backside. But there were hot air balloon rides, weather permitting, and a kid zone where they can participate in an Antique Car Scavenger Hunt, enjoy the Petting Zoo, meet some Mystery Guests as well as take part in other planned activities. Jamin Promotions provided a 12 page full color program which listed the 7 am – 7 pm daily events that were taking place. I did see some out of New England regulars that attended the old Worcester Nationals and I hope the Cars of Summer Car Club continues to get the support from these same car owners. Those that I spoke to love coming to the park and renewing old acquaintances as well as seeing new and different cars show up each year.

What to Do on the Off Thursday Night What do you do on an off Thursday night when there’s no Bass Pro Shops cruise scheduled? How about checking the CRUIZN page in our newsletter and trying one of the other area cruises? I’ve been doing that when the weather cooperates. I’ve tried the Wheels of Time new cruise venue at the Raynham-Taunton Dog Track on Rte. 138, Exit 8 off I-495. http:// www.wheelsoftimema.com/events No more getting log jammed as in the past at their old S. E. Voke venue that had space limitations when the car count was high. They now have plenty of room for everyone, car owners and spectators. Plus, if you’re the gambling sort, Raynham’s clubhouse is a short walk from the cruise and there’s a gas station out front if you forgot to fill up. Dom Cardillo is still spinning his oldies collection and the famous W.O.T. food trailer is there to satisfy your hunger pangs.

I’ve also sampled a couple of new cruise nights in the Fall River – New Bedford area on U.S. Route 6. These locations will be added rally points for the October 5 & 6 U.S. Route 6 Provincetown Cruise Weekend.

The vintage 1953 stainless steel Al Mac’s Diner at 135 President’s Ave. (U.S. Route 6) has been an iconic Fall River waterfront eatery for more than 100 years. The Diner, on the National Register of Historic Places, is now owned by the Dunse family and has recently been totally refurbished inside. Executive Chef Robert Dunse II who runs the diner was the former lead catering chef for Gillette Stadium functions and Bob Kraft’s personal chef so you know the food is going to be exceptionally good. Bob promotes their diner as providing 4 star food at 1 star prices and the strawberry shortcake I saw going past my eyes had me drooling. Cruise car owners get a 15% discount on Thursday cruise nights which are run by the Blue Angels Car Club from Westport. The diner was moved from its original location on North Davol St. to its current location in the Executive Plaza in 1999 when the created the Bi Centennial Park. The Plaza also is home to a Dunkin Donut, Battleship Brewhouse and Fox’s Pizza with plenty of parking lot. http://www.almacsdiner.net/ordereze/1001/Page.aspx Emma Jean’s Cupcake, Ice Cream, Hot Dog Shoppe & Candy House on U.S. Route 6 (115 Huttleston Ave.) in Fairhaven, just across harbor from New Bedford, is owned by the Melanson family and the cruise is run by their staff. A poodle skirt attendant will direct you to available parking spaces in front and along the coned parking areas reserved for cruise cars on Thursdays that has room for about 30-40 cars in the paved lot with overflow parking in the unpaved area next door. Car owners get a voucher for a hot dog and soft drink or an ice cream which is home made on site along with cupcakes and hand dipped chocolates. Fun FM 107’s Scott Reiniche is the D.J. playing the oldies. There is a walkup take-out window and outside picnic table seating area where the Ice Cream & Hot Dog Shoppe is located and inside seating can be reached through the front of the Candy & Gift Shoppe or right side entrance through the Cupcake & Coffee Shoppe where clean restrooms are also located. They also have bounce house around the side for the kids with all proceeds collected going to the March of Dimes in Emma Jeans memory. They list 14 different hot dogs and 11 burgers on their menus plus you can create your own. http://totalconfections.com/

July 13th, 9th Annual Bourne Scenic Park BBQ

It was HOT, HOT, HOT but the breeze off the Cape Cod Canal was not. The CRUIZN Mass Cruisers gathered at Lorenzo’s Italian Restaurant parking lot on Rte. 28 below the Middleboro circle around 10:15 AM on Saturday July 20 to cruise the old Rte. 28 to the Bourne Scenic Campground between U.S. Route 6 and the Cape Cod Canal under the Bourne Bridge.

The idea was to avoid any weekend Cape Cod Saturday morning traffic backup on I-495. Hosts Bob Woods and Diane Thornton have reserved the campground’s function tent along the canal roadway from 11 am – 4 pm for their annual club invite for the past several years. Except for the heat, weather was not going to be a problem and everything went according to plan. The Rte. 28 cruise was enjoyed by all who took the road less travelled and it may just wind up being the thing to consider doing for all future cruises to the Cape.

The food was great at the BBQ and the canal views were fun. No porpoises, whales or sharks were sighted but there were two great Tug barge tows heading back to their home ports from Boston that passed under the Bourne Bridge where we were located which provided some great photo ops for me instead of taking the usual pictures of our cars.

Next year, I’m going to find a way to strap a bike on Diamond Lil’s luggage rack and bring that along so I can pedal my butt along the 8 mile canal bike trail to work off all the BBQ calories I consume.
