Head Coach Rex Walters A new era began April 7, 2008, when the University of San Francisco named Rex Walters head coach of the men’s basketball program. The former Kansas star and NBA veteran hit the ground running, and entering his fourth season on the Hilltop, excitement continues to build for what promises to be a memorable season. The Dons look prepared to follow Walters’ challenge: Play hard. Play smart. Play together. After a rocky 4-9 start to the 2010-11 season, USF righted the ship in dramatic fashion and ripped off 11 victories in its last 15 games to close out the regular season. The Dons posted a 10-4 slate in the challenging West Coast Conference – the program’s best league mark since 1982 – and were in contention for the team’s first WCC Regular Season Championship in nearly three decades on the final day. Highlights of the regular season included thrilling overtime triumphs against Colorado (83-81) and eventual WCC Champion Gonzaga (96-91). San Francisco qualified for its first postseason tournament since 2004 and marched to the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider. com Postseason Tournament. Walters’ coaching pedigree began as a player, receiving tutelage from some of the game’s legendary coaches. Roy Williams at the University of Kansas and the NBA’s Chuck Daly, Larry Brown and Pat Riley all mentored Walters as a player. Walters starred for two seasons at Kansas, and in 68 starts under Williams, averaged 15.6 points per game. KU combined to go 56-12 overall and won backto-back Big Eight titles, capped by a trip to the 1993 Final Four. A two-time All-Big Eight team pick, Walters was the 1993 Big Eight Male Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Kansas in 1993 with a B.S. in education, Walters was selected by New Jersey as the 16th overall pick in the 1993 NBA Draft. He went on to play seven seasons in total with the Nets, Philadelphia 76ers and Miami Heat. Walters and his wife, Deanna, have five children: Addison (15), Drew (13), Riley (10), Gunner (8) and welcomed Ace Jordan in July of 2008. Senior forward Angelo Caloiaro had 17 points with six rebounds and junior guard Michael Williams chipped in 16 points. San Francisco constructed one of its most complete first halves of the season. The Dons took a 9-7 lead with 14:54 remaining in the half on back-to-back jumpers from Dickerson and rolled from there. LMU pulled to within three at 18-15 with 11:47 left, but USF responded with a 23-5 burst to take a 41-20 lead with 3:03 to go. San Francisco looked to be in control for most of the second half as well. LMU cut the lead to single digits, but the Dons found an answer until the final Lions’ flurry. Loyola Marymount scored 60 points in the second half. Statistically, it was remarkable. Both teams connected on 29 field goals and 11 3-pointers. Both teams missed four free throws. Both squads pulled down 32 rebounds and seven offensive boards. Both the Dons and the Lions scored 30 points in the paint. USF shot a season-best .826 (19-23) from the line. Unfortunately, three of the Dons’ misses at the charity stripe came in the final three minutes as the Lions climbed back into the contest. Drew Viney scored a team-high 20 points with nine rebounds to lead LMU, while Jarred DuBois added 17 points off the bench. LION LAMENTATIONS: u LMU completes the season sweep for the first time since 2008-09 u USF is just 1-3 in road games in California this season u San Francisco’s Southland products - Perris Blackwell, Michael Williams and Avery Johnson - scored 33 points u Rashad Green scored 20-plus for the ninth time at USF

REX WALTERS EARNS CONTRACT EXTENSION: The University of San Francisco and head men’s basketball coach Rex Walters have agreed to a new contract which will run through the 2015-16 season. Walters coached in his 100th game at USF when the Dons opened play in the 2011 Carrs Safeway Great Alaska Shootout with a 71-69 victory against Dartmouth. “I just want to thank Father Privett, the USF Board of Trustees, Charlie Cross and Scott Sidwell for doing this for me,” Walters said. “It is important that our current players and recruits know that there is a commitment from the University of San Francisco to keep me here to continue building an outstanding program.” San Francisco posted a remarkable campaign in 2010-11 and reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. The Dons posted a 10-4 slate in the challenging WCC – the program’s best league mark since 1982 – and were in contention for the team’s first WCC Regular Season Championship in nearly three decades on the final day.

BASKETBALL GURU DEBUTS 2/15/12 The University of San Francisco and Dons Basketball will honor Naismith Hall of Fame coach Pete Newell when it hosts the world premiere of “Basketball Guru, the Pete Newell Story” Wednesday, February 15 at Presentation Theater on the USF campus. The Don’s home game against Brigham Young will be designated as “Pete Newell Appreciation Night” as USF Basketball recognizes the coach who guided the Dons to the top of the basketball world in 1949 when the first West Coast team ever invited to the NIT tournament shocked the world at Madison Square Garden. For more information on securing tickets for the premiere, contact Julie Congi at congi@usfca.edu or (415) 422-2875.

DONS TALE OF THE TAPE - 2010-11 SEason The keys to USF’s Surge: USF’s 2010-11 men’s basketball team will never be accused of using a fast start. In fact, the Dons carried a 4-9 record into its Hilltop Challenge game against Hampton December 30. From there, it was a significantly different story. These charts at right and below show the tale of the tape, measuring key statistical categories during the Dons 4-9 start compared to its 15-6 finish; USF’s non-conference slate against the 2011 West Coast Conference campaign; and finally, compares the 2009-10 season with 2010-11 regular season.
