What’s your focus? Is it to make friendships that will last a lifetime, to be successful in the real world, to get involved on campus, or to make the grade? On our campus, you’ll see our focus in everything we do—from our small class sizes to our active campus life to professors who know you by name and care about your success. No matter what your focus is…at USC Aiken our focus is YOU.

Focus: (f o¯ -k s) to concentrate attention e

or energy toward a particular point or purpose

Academic Excellence At USC Aiken, everything we do is with you in mind. Come to our campus, and you’ll witness our professors, our staff, our students—the entire USC Aiken community—working together toward one common goal: your success. Our small class sizes offer a setting for personal attention from faculty—so you’re an individual, not a number. Our classes, which average 18 or fewer students, are taught by professors, not teaching assistants. So your classes are led by experienced instructors who put teaching where it belongs…first.

Point of focus: USC Aiken was ranked #1 by U.S.News & World Report’s Guide, “America’s Best Colleges,” as the Top Public Comprehensive College (Bachelor’s) in the South in 2007.

} Academic Research USC Aiken is a teaching university. That means the number one priority of our faculty is to provide you with a top-quality education. Our faculty members do it all—conduct independent research, make presentations, offer scholarly advice, organize study abroad programs, and more. But our overall goal is to give you the one-on-one personal attention that’s often not found at larger institutions. Whether it’s offering personalized tutoring in our Writing Room or Math Lab, conducting a study group, or organizing a service learning project, our talented professors make a commitment to put you first.

“In our Chemistry program, students gain hands-on experience in the research process. My particular research focuses on nanotechnology, which we use in the development of new magnetic storage media, nanoelectronics, and optical sensors that can be used for biochemical and nuclear threat detection.”

– Dr. Chad Leverette,

assistant professor of chemistry

Point of focus: USC Aiken has some of the best professional schools in South Carolina. All three—business, nursing, and education—have received the highest level of accreditation possible. This means more opportunities for you to learn from the best and brightest the University has to offer.

} Student Life Our campus is just the right size for you to get involved. You can get connected through Greek life, community service, sports, theatre, music, academic clubs, or student government—just to name a few. Being involved on campus helps you make friends, develop as a leader, gain important skills, and—most importantly—it’s fun! We all know college exists outside the classroom. At USC Aiken, you’ll develop relationships with other students over a latte at our coffee shop, during a workout at our Wellness Center, in a study group at the library, or cheering on the Pacers from the student section during a game. Our campus is your perfect home away from home. You’ll be comfortable in our modern, spacious housing with resident assistants who are here to offer advice or just lend an ear.

In focus:

“As a Resident Assistant, it’s my job to make sure students adjust to living on campus. In each of our housing facilities, you’ll find RAs like me, as well as professional staff members, who have undergone special training to help students deal with some of the common issues that may arise when living away from home for the first time. That’s why organizations such as the Resident Student Association put together several social events and programs during the semester to help on-campus students get to know one another and make the most of their time at USC Aiken.”

– Erin Smith, elementary education major

Painting the Streets is an annual event held during Homecoming week. Organizations leave their mark on the campus—literally—by painting a section of the street in support of the Pacers.

Point of focus: USC Aiken offers more than 80 student organizations and countless other ways to participate in campus life. Activities and programs are held almost every night of the week—even on weekends. So if you’re looking to get involved on campus, you won’t have to look far to find the activity that’s right for you.

Academic Success We want to provide you with the tools for a successful future. From the moment you set foot on our campus, you’ll discover a multitude of programs to mold you into a more engaged citizen and prepare you for success. Through opportunities such as the American Democracy Project Film Series and the First-Year Experience or organizations like the Minority Achievement Program and Peer Educators, you’ll learn what it takes to be a better student and a more well-rounded individual.

Point of focus: As a USC Aiken student, your success is our success. That’s why we provide a number of support services and other opportunities to meet your needs through our Academic Success Center. From individual tutoring to other tools such as our Writing Room, Language Learning Center, and Math Lab, the Academic Success Center is there to help you adjust to college life. The best part? These services are free of charge to all students.

Spirit of Giving For many of our students, getting involved in community service is an essential piece of their college mosaic. Making a difference in the lives of others is what USC Aiken is all about. From its earliest days, the University has worked hard to maintain strong ties to the Aiken community. And that’s a tradition that continues today. Whether it’s building homes for Habitat for Humanity, reading books to kids at the local Boys and Girls Club, or—on an even larger scale—assisting with the cleanup efforts in the homes of Hurricane Katrina victims, you can be a part of that same giving spirit—the spirit of USC Aiken.

In focus:

“After coming to USC Aiken, I was able to really

Spirit of Competition At USC Aiken, you’ll find evidence of our school spirit all over campus. From our three-time national championship golf team to an array of intramurals that include everything from flag football to ultimate frisbee, you can be a part of that school spirit. On the court and off, our students are winners. Half of all our student-athletes have a minimum GPA of 3.0. So that means that you really can have it all at USC Aiken—a successful future and a great time.

projects that benefit both the local community and beyond. Through my fraternity, I participate in Project Alpha, a program that educates young men about responsibility, STDs, and teen pregnancy. I’m also a part of IMPACT, a community service organization on campus that takes part in several activities throughout the year, including the Campus Beautification Project, Relay for Life, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. Probably the most rewarding thing I’ve done was through Alternative Spring Break when I assisted with cleanup efforts for Hurricane Katrina victims in New Orleans. There are so many opportunities to get involved and help others at USC Aiken. I’ve been fortunate to be part of just a few of them.”

– Marcus Allen, business marketing major

Internships Let’s face it. Nothing lasts forever, and college is no exception. USC Aiken faculty and staff encourage students to take a hands-on approach to learning. You’ll have the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to real-life situations and settings through experiences such as internships, study abroad programs, co-ops, and job shadowing. Our students have been selected for competitive internships at world-renowned companies such as BMW, Bridgestone Firestone, and the U.S. Department of Energy. That means a healthy resume and an edge over the competition when the time comes to venture into the “real world.”

In focus:

“Learning in the classroom has given me a generalized idea of how communication and business concepts work in the ‘real world.’ By interning for Disney, I’ve been able to apply what I’ve learned in the classroom by actually participating in these real world experiences. I’ve even communicated in a different language for guests at Disney, thanks to my French courses. I constantly find myself using concepts that I learned in the classroom, some of which I wouldn’t have been able to use until after college.”

– Paige Jeffcoat, communications major

and intern for the Walt Disney Company

Study Abroad

At USC Aiken, we value a diverse learning community. In fact, our students come from 33 states and 26 countries. That’s why we offer a variety of intercultural programs and study abroad opportunities to expand both your horizons and your mind. From our annual International Film Festival to our biology program in the Bahamas (yes, you can actually get credit for taking a class in the Bahamas!), USC Aiken offers many possibilities to help you get the most out of your college experience and to be the best person you can be.
