The Importance of Real Time Clock Functionality Urban Solar developed Real Time Clock (RTC) functionality based on the demands of our municipal clients across North America. Cities and transit agencies requested we turn off their lights at a certain time of night to comply with municipal ordinances. They asked us for greater light output during spring, summer and fall months when more energy is available for the system. And they demanded that systems operate properly even when photocell operation failed.

The Real Time Clock is a main reason that Urban Solar lighting systems are so reliable. We use two decades of site-specific solar insolation data from NASA to program monthly or seasonal profiles that use only the power we know will be available at that time of year. This keeps your lights on and avoids stressing batteries and shortening their life span.

Unlike basic controllers that dim or turn off your lighting system after a set number of hours throughout the year, our ECM runs like a Swiss clock to comply with municipal lighting ordinances, service schedules, and access hours. Daylight savings time adjustment is automatic.

No wasted energy

Eliminate false activations

In northern climates, the amount of sun available during the winter months is significantly reduced. Rather than limit light output to winter levels all year, our ECM operates reliably all year while offering brighter lighting during spring, summer and fall months if desired.

When light hits a solar panel, voltage climbs and a current flows. The more solar energy hitting the panel, the higher the voltage. Photocell activation works on the principle of turning on the light below a certain panel voltage and turning it off above a certain voltage. A system using photocell activation exclusively can be fooled by a bright overhead light at night or an obscured panel during the day. Urban Solar systems always know the time, so they will never be on during the day or off during the night.

Our clients frequently ask us: "How can I ensure my solar lighting systems will operate reliably for a decade or more?" In addition to manufacturing the highest quality solar lighting systems available, we help you accomplish this in two ways: 1. We size every system (solar array and battery bank) taking into account how much energy is available at your location and the illumination level you require during each month of the year.

2. We ensure that each of your systems will receive sufficient direct sunlight throughout the year. Even a best-built and perfectly sized solar system requires adequate sun exposure to function reliably.

Case Study: TriMet Transit

Background The Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon, or TriMet, is a public agency that operates mass transit for most of the metropolitan area of Portland, Oregon. In Portland, more people are using public transit, with transit use growing faster than automobile use. TriMet has responded to this increased demand by investing in 55 new Eco-Friendly buses, with plans for 70 more. The Challenge With increasing ridership in their jurisdiction, TriMet knew it was important to prioritize improvements to safety, including reliable lighting at stops and shelters. Case Study: Porterville Transit Background Porterville Transit boasts a full service, comprehensive transit system, serving the needs of Porterville, California residents and visitors. Porterville Transit's mission statement is to provide safe, affordable, reliable and efficient transit service that effectively meets the needs of Porterville residents. The Challenge The safety and security of its riders is Porterville Transit’s primary concern, especially when they are traveling after dark. Increasing visibility at bus stops and shelters was identified as one way to make riders safer, while also reducing the rate of pass-bys by drivers. To do this, Porterville Transit started looking for a solution that was reliable, effective, and environmentally responsible. The Solution Working with Porterville Transit to determine their specific requirements, Urban Solar designed and installed two distinct systems: LED pole-mounted bus stop, and solarpowered LED bus shelter lighting. Case Study: Orchard Park, Irvine, CA

Background As a leading planned city, Irvine has one of the lowest rates of crime in the United States, a number of leading universities and a burgeoning tech sector. With amenities including basketball courts, playgrounds and a baseball diamond, Orchard Park attracts citizens during both daytime and evening hours. Municipal code requires all areas with vehicle traffic to be lit to a minimum of 1.0 foot-candles, in excess of IES requirements and that all solar lighting systems are ULcertified as entire systems.

Case Study: Layritz Park

Background This large community park is home to Layritz Little League, the Prospect Lake Soccer Club and the Layritz Intermediate Baseball Association. Accessed primarily from Layritz Place, the park is also accessible from Markham Road at the Vancouver Island Technology Park. A large playground, installed in 2010 has a climbing net, bouldering rocks, swings and a separate structure for the younger 2 to 5-year-old children. The Challenge With a heavily used walking trail, Layritz Park sees a wide variety of users frequent the park, trails and pathways every year. With more and more events and festivals making their way to the park, night time illumination is becoming critical. The infrastructure for lighting poles is not in place and trenching and digging for utility power is undesirable, as it would damage the park setting and environment.

The Solution Urban Solar supplied 14 x RMS 50 systems to provide significant illumination along the central pathway. This allowed the city to install adequate safety lighting while avoiding any damage to the park or the surrounding area. Project Summary: Magnolia Manor Park

Background Built on the site of a now-covered reservoir in Seattle, WA, the two-acre Magnolia Manor Park features a number of paths between its various areas and amenities. The mixed-use park’s commanding views of the surrounding area draws nearby residents throughout the year. The Challenge Although recent improvements had made the park a popular destination for locals and visitors, a lack of effective lighting made it impossible to enjoy safely after sundown. The Solution To enhance the safety of the park and improve visitors’ access after dark, Urban Solar helped Seattle Parks and Recreation determine the best strategy for adding lighting to its central pathway. Case Study: Sun Peaks

Background Sun Peaks’ behemoth 4,270 acres is spread across three skiable peaks, each with a personality all their own. Each mountain is easily accessible from the village, so ski all three peaks in the same day or stick to the mountain area that you love the most. Sun Peaks receives 6 meters of snow annually and is blessed with light, dry powder conditions that the Interior of BC is famous for. Sun Peaks has an abundance of activities and events for both on and off the slopes, leaving you wishing for more time at Canada's second largest ski area. The Challenge Sun Peaks houses several workers throughout the season. They have a large residential area where the employee quarters are located. Prior to this installation, employees had to walk along the busy road, leading up to the resort. There were no suitable pathways or side roads that were lit in any way. With winter conditions resulting in slippery roads and poor visibility, people were being struck on the roads on their way to and from work.

The Solution Sun Peaks created a specific side route/pathway and installed a total of 19 x SLLS 240 systems. The lights were an ideal solution to illuminate the walkway from the worker’s quarters to the main resort area.
