hristmas is a time for giving! This issue shows how we can extend the spirit of giving beyond our homes. We admire Shaan BermudezHizon who is deeply involved in activities for the less fortunate. The same spirit is real for Cathy, Rea and Joanne featured in our Urban Tips section.  These urban moms make the rest of us feel like toddlers with the way they remind us to “Share!”

I’m not yet a mom but I enjoyed reading the last two issues of your magazine because it gives me insights on what to expect when I become a mom myself not to mention the fact that I take care of my 3 year old niece which gives me a first hand experience of how it would feel like if i were on the same position. - Josephine Modina, tita of 1

Shaan

shines a PATRICIA BERMUDEZ-HIZON SHARES HOW MARRIAGE, MOTHERHOOD, AND volunteerism KEEPS HER AGLOW.

Written by Marga Deona Photography by Ben Chan

BAsketball fan will probably always remember Patricia “Shaan” Bermudez-Hizon for the halftime proposal her now-husband Vince did back in 2003. However, Shaan’s mettle as a credible and articulate sportscaster put her in a league of her own and, in effect, sets a precedent to this generation’s crop of courtside reporters and sportscasters. But off the court, Shaan is a mother to two boys – she describes them as “rather rambunctious, but brilliant and gifted.” Four year-old Vicente wants to be an astronaut when he grows up, while two year-old Paul is a miniversion of his dad – always grabbing a basketball and dunking into the toy hoops ring in their backyard. Being married to a former basketball player, Shaan has shattered the image of a stereotypical high-maintenance sports superstar’s wife. Her down-to-earth presence and convivial ways of inspiring people shine brighter than any bling. In the midst of a calamity-stricken nation, despair and weariness could just take its toll on many. But not for Shaan, who has been tirelessly doing so even before volunteering became the vogue. “I’ve been involved in volunteer work for quite some time now,” she shares. “Even before this entire Ondoy thing happened.” She even put up her own foundation, the Everyday Is Your Birthday Foundation. It aims to encourage people to celebrate their birthdays with the sick and less fortunate, in effect bestowing upon them the gift

of having a bigger, more open heart. During the most recent disaster that is typhoon Ondoy, Shaan played a crucial role in saving and helping victims. “Just two streets down our house is Tumana Bridge. That area was severely affected,” she points out from their Quezon City home. She had forty people stay in their home for a week until she, along with the help of her kind neighbours, rented a townhouse down the street for the victims. But it didn’t end there. She continues to go onsite and help out, whether for immediate relief or planning for long-term rehabilitation. Her being hands-on stems from her being a hands-on mom to her children, whom she used to bring to her tapings and shoots when they were infants – and breastfed them in between. “I went back to work three weeks after giving birth,” she says. “I would just bring the kids to work and take care of them in between tapings and on-cam duties.” There is the danger of spreading oneself too thin in being a multitasker. But if done well, one could actually be giving the best gift to all – time and energy. Shaan has been so generous with her time for her volunteer work, her own foundation, her family, her friends, her career, and even herself. Shaan keeps herself fit with a variety of sports – running and cycling among them. There are also days when she accompanies husband Vince for a morning round of golf. Her active lifestyle enables her to efficiently allocate her time.

Being an urban mom is to have a hefty amount of energy to spend with the family, embark on your passions, and do the job you love. However, having a big heart to let everybody in – family, friends, sports, and even strangers – is what makes Shaan shine. b

Migi’s Corner NAME: Cathy Babao-Guballa MISSION: to uplift the living conditions of children confined in government hospitals or of sick children who need medical equipment and financial assistance. WHY THIS CAUSE: This was borne out of my own experience of losing my 4-year old son, Migi, to complications that arose after an open heart surgery in 1998 HOW TO HELP: Find your passion, find what you are good at, what makes your heart leap and go and just do it.

Kid’s Ahoy Playshop NAME: Joanne Tupas-Parsons MISSION: to help children cope and recover from the trauma brought about by Typhoon Ondoy.
